Ukrainian MPs vote to oust President Yanukovych

Ukrainian MPs have voted to oust President Viktor Yanukovych and hold early presidential elections on 25 May.

The vote came after police stopped guarding presidential buildings, allowing protesters in, and parliament made new high-level appointments.

Mr Yanukovych said it was a “coup” and vowed not to stand down.

If they are following their constitution, it isn’t a “coup” it is an impeachment

I have learned so much from this thread it was like a crash course in the history of Ukraine @ since 2002. I have read the news and come Back here for amazing commentary and explanation.

Since it looks like East v West will ensure (statues coming down in the west, former PM claims of not giving up in the east), I am very concerned there will be a (fully funded on both sides) civil war.

The Catholic blogosphere is lit up with misunderstanding and misinformation about RC, EO, and EC tenets and actions of faith.

Oi, what a mess with many precipitating causes and even more divisive repercussions.

An impeachment is only an accusation, less than an indictment. I do not know what fruit it would yield.

BBC has reported he has tried to leave the country twice but there were issues with his “border papers,” which means a. Russia is considering disavowing him or b. Ukraine is almost ready to send him to their Elba.

Yes, he left in a hurry. Ukrainian people, without looting, are now taking their families to see the opulent mansion he built for himself complete with a personal Yacht waterpark, gold-plated bathrooms, collection of expensive cars, exotic zoo, and all the other assets he accumulated on the backs of Ukrainians. It is something that after all the bloodshed regular Ukrainians are simply observing how rich of a life he lived on his multi-hectare mansion.

Yanukovych also threw a bunch of documents into the Dnipro River from his mansion complete with papers documenting rampant corruption, and a black list of journalists who were to be dealt with. Also, religious icons from the 16th century were found that he had stolen, Ukraine’s spiritual heritage, for himself.

This mansion-building at public expense seems to be common amongst most dictators.

Yanukovych took off to Kharkiv, and tried to fly out to Russia, but a Ukrainian border patrol said he had the wrong papers.

Statues of Lenin are falling en masse in Ukraine now. They are falling all across Ukraine, even in Eastern Ukraine where people have also had enough oppression.

I’ll have to find a video of Yanukovych’s personal mansion. One also has to remember that Yanukovych’s two sons became rich beyond belief as soon as their dad became president as well, so looting Ukraine became a “family business”; indeed his criminal clique was known in Ukrainian as the “family” or “simya”.

I am both glad and sad about the documents. Ours the “proof” I didn’t want to see.

And on that blacklist of journalists was, you guessed it, Tetanya Chornobol, the female journalist who was beaten within an inch of her life.

There will be a candle light vigil tonight at the Taras Shevchenko Monument near the White House. If the weather stays mild, I will go. I don’t know who.is hosting it, I just heard it on the local news.

Speaker Oleksandr Turchynov named interim president

Oleksandr Turchynov takes charge following the dismissal of President Viktor Yanukovych on Saturday. Mr Turchynov told MPs they had until Tuesday to form a new unity government.

Parliament also voted to seize Mr Yanukovych’s luxury estate near Kiev, which protesters entered on Saturday.

The whereabouts of Mr Yanukovych, who described parliament’s decision to vote him out as a coup, remain unclear.

Thousands of opposition supporters remain in Independence Square, where the atmosphere is described as calm.

Just viewed several videos and still pics - all I can say is ‘SICK’! Amazing how much and how quickly a world class Thug (with a capital T) can amass such power and steal so much stuff. How long did it take to get the building plans, contractors, supplies, plumbers, furnishings, marina construction, golf course designers and ground construction, security system, housekeepers, gardners, launderers, cooks, bartenders, (didn’t see a pool - probably had one). How did this stuff and where did it and “they” come from?

All this backup and enjoyment needs to be revealed. Every cotton-pickin one of the providers need to be tracked down. Every bit of money they received needs to be taken back for the people. Seems like every time one of these “mega” criminals get caught and flee the coop, none of the money is recovered. Every relative and kissin cousin should not be comforted by their dirty enterprise.

The propaganda is trying to plant the shaky fear that because the people took a fearless stand (don’t they always have to?) there will be a civil war arranged by Putin.
I hope the people don’t cave under that boogey-boo! If they stay strong, present their case from one to another in reasonable talk, they have truth on their side. Truth will out! (someone said that once).

What to think about Yulia? Don’t have a clue but one news announcer said she was a “close friend” of Putin…:hmmm:…if that is so, why did she do two years in a prison.
Also, I don’t think Putin has any “friends” let alone any “close” ones, but he does have his cronies. When it comes to the old USSR and the KGB - don’t ask me to give them a reference!

So now we wonder…:onpatrol:…somebody is helping him and when they are found,
(and they will turn up if you look under the right rock) he needs to be arrested for many charges. The top of the list should be the young girl reporter that he ordered be beaten and if she died - that was okay too! Find out everything and let the sun shine!!

As many commentators have remarked, for a “revolution”, in the capital city of Ukraine, there has been no looting, unlike many other revolutions in the world. People are calm. Parents taking their kids for strolls through the streets of Kyiv. No terror now with Yanukovych gone. If anything the looting was done by Yanukovych, not the people of Ukraine.

Problems may only exist in regions where Yanukovych’s criminal clique can still pay off and support pro-Yanukovych “titushky” or thugs for hire who will cause violence, and this seems to be where the danger may lie.

I know that in Kharkiv pro-Russian supporters and titushky gathered to protect a statue of Lenin which they are afraid will be brought down, as many Lenins have throughout Ukraine since Yanukovych was impeached. As a Catholic, I obviously would like to see all statues to the butcher Lenin removed from Ukraine which country suffered so much from Lenin/Stalin, etc. etc.

The backlash against the Euromaidan protests is beginning in the south and east of Ukraine, with Russian flag waving groups breaking up rallies in support of the takeover euronews.com/2014/02/23/violence-erupts-in-ukraine-as-pro-russian-protesters-clash-with-kyiv-supporters/
Do these people exclusively wish for only Russian trade, i.e., do they want to be that dependent on Russians? Moreover, do they not see the massive corruption in government, are they not disillusioned by Yanukovych (whose leadership was more like a dictatorship)? I don’t get the Russian waving, honestly. Either Ukrainians are for the Ukraine or they cease to exist.

Why would any Ukrainian protect a statue of Lenin, what is wrong with these people, don’t they know their own history???
