Of course any famine is a tragedy, but a deliberate, man-made one is morally reprehensible, I’m sure you’ll agree, being a person whose ancestors suffered that very fate.
It’s entirely possible that Hitler and Stalin were taking lessons from the British in India. In any event, a country’s past actions don’t nullify their responsibility to take a moral stand on issues of the day.Hear, hear!

I can also make the claim that because your wife is Russian, and because you’ve lived there, and are emersed in the culture on a daily basis, that you are biased in your understanding of the situation. And from reading your responses I get the feeling that you take umbrage whenever someone attempts to put any guilt on Russia (and this from having had several conversations with you). You pointed out I regard myself as an expert on the Russian Federation, hardly, that would require several lifetimes work. However I would say living there, been married to a citizen of it and daily been involved with Russian culture would on the whole render me slightly more knowledgeable than the average here. I have pointed out to you before Josie that my wife’s family are also of partly Ukrainian heritage and that includes those who would agree with Andrew to some extent and those who would disagree also.
I think part of the American obsession with a return to the Cold War is a nostalgia for the “Glory Days” when they perceive america was more respected than they are in the confusing Post 9/11 world. They think if they can return things to the Cold War with Russia as the enemy, some of Americas respect in the world might return as well, and they might not feel so bad about themselves.Bishop Fulton Sheen used to have a weekly televised program and he delivered most excellent lessons on our Catholic Faith. Among a host of related subjects he taught, was Communism. He taught the history, including how all the trickery and suffering was placed upon the people through Marx, Lenin, Stalin, and a long line of names that would give you cold chills to hear. The way he taught, the listener remembered the lessons.
Twisting the truth was fundamental to Communist tactics. Suspicion of intent was first and foremost in everything they said and did. As an example; “we need to ensure the safety of our citizens”. Uh huh …
Mr. Putin was educated, trained, and served the Union of the Soviet Socialistic Republic, and was progressing in his KGB career. He has held his powerful position in a manner that he learned very well.
The Russian people had to endure the effects as well as those under its control. They would probably not like to make a return trip.
Revealed: The forgotten treaty which could drag the US and UK into WAR with Russia if Putin’s troops intervene in Ukraine
A treaty signed in 1994 by the US and Britain could pull both countries into a war to protect Ukraine if President Putin’s troops cross into the country.
Bill Clinton, John Major, Boris Yeltsin and Leonid Kuchma – the then-rulers of the USA, UK, Russia and Ukraine - agreed to the The Budapest Memorandum as part of the denuclearization of former Soviet republics after the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
Technically it means that if Russia has invaded Ukraine then it would be difficult for the US and Britain to avoid going to war.
Putin installed 150,000 troops along Ukraine’s borders after the overthrow of Moscow ally Viktor Yanukovych by pro-European protesters.
On Friday, as pro-Russia gunmen patrolled Crimean streets in armored vehicles and took over airports there, President Obama delivered a blunt warnings to Moscow.
“We are now deeply concerned by reports of military movements taken by the Russian Federation inside of Ukraine,” he told reporters at the White House.

I think if you look at it, this movement against Yanukovych’s corruption started quite spontaneously and was organic to Ukraine. Plus, all of Ukraine’s Churches placed the blame for the recent violence in Ukraine on Yanukovych. The clergy also held prayer meetings every morning in Independence Square (the Maidan) for the protestors, providing communion and confession, as they realized the incredibly corrupt and immoral system the ousted President Yanukovych was creating in the country was basically suicide for the country’s spiritual and material health. The latest from Ukraine’s religious bodies:The United States is determined to reignite the Cold War, and won’t let any facts or logic stand in there way. How dare any nation not fall in line and become just as secular as us!
