Of course any famine is a tragedy, but a deliberate, man-made one is morally reprehensible, I’m sure you’ll agree, being a person whose ancestors suffered that very fate.

Hear, hear!
It’s entirely possible that Hitler and Stalin were taking lessons from the British in India. In any event, a country’s past actions don’t nullify their responsibility to take a moral stand on issues of the day.

So then you didn’t actually read my entire post, i.e., you would have known that it was dated and that the Washington Post wrote it?
You pointed out I regard myself as an expert on the Russian Federation, hardly, that would require several lifetimes work. However I would say living there, been married to a citizen of it and daily been involved with Russian culture would on the whole render me slightly more knowledgeable than the average here. I have pointed out to you before Josie that my wife’s family are also of partly Ukrainian heritage and that includes those who would agree with Andrew to some extent and those who would disagree also.
I can also make the claim that because your wife is Russian, and because you’ve lived there, and are emersed in the culture on a daily basis, that you are biased in your understanding of the situation. And from reading your responses I get the feeling that you take umbrage whenever someone attempts to put any guilt on Russia (and this from having had several conversations with you).

So…my cable is down. What are the headlines from Ukraine? It’s been a few hours. I’m still nervous about the offensive Russian posturing.

Bishop Fulton Sheen used to have a weekly televised program and he delivered most excellent lessons on our Catholic Faith. Among a host of related subjects he taught, was Communism. He taught the history, including how all the trickery and suffering was placed upon the people through Marx, Lenin, Stalin, and a long line of names that would give you cold chills to hear. The way he taught, the listener remembered the lessons.

Twisting the truth was fundamental to Communist tactics. Suspicion of intent was first and foremost in everything they said and did. As an example; “we need to ensure the safety of our citizens”. Uh huh …

Mr. Putin was educated, trained, and served the Union of the Soviet Socialistic Republic, and was progressing in his KGB career. He has held his powerful position in a manner that he learned very well.

The Russian people had to endure the effects as well as those under its control. They would probably not like to make a return trip.

The United States is determined to reignite the Cold War, and won’t let any facts or logic stand in there way. How dare any nation not fall in line and become just as secular as us!

I think part of the American obsession with a return to the Cold War is a nostalgia for the “Glory Days” when they perceive america was more respected than they are in the confusing Post 9/11 world. They think if they can return things to the Cold War with Russia as the enemy, some of Americas respect in the world might return as well, and they might not feel so bad about themselves.

According to France 24 and the Beeb, 2000 Russian soldiers landed in Crimea, 150 per plane, dressed in civvies until they landed. Guess their orders didn’t kick in until they hit the tarmac.

Revealed: The forgotten treaty which could drag the US and UK into WAR with Russia if Putin’s troops intervene in Ukraine
A treaty signed in 1994 by the US and Britain could pull both countries into a war to protect Ukraine if President Putin’s troops cross into the country.
Bill Clinton, John Major, Boris Yeltsin and Leonid Kuchma – the then-rulers of the USA, UK, Russia and Ukraine - agreed to the The Budapest Memorandum as part of the denuclearization of former Soviet republics after the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
Technically it means that if Russia has invaded Ukraine then it would be difficult for the US and Britain to avoid going to war.
Putin installed 150,000 troops along Ukraine’s borders after the overthrow of Moscow ally Viktor Yanukovych by pro-European protesters.
On Friday, as pro-Russia gunmen patrolled Crimean streets in armored vehicles and took over airports there, President Obama delivered a blunt warnings to Moscow.
“We are now deeply concerned by reports of military movements taken by the Russian Federation inside of Ukraine,” he told reporters at the White House.
“Any violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity would be deeply destabilizing,” he said in a brief appearance. “The United States will stand with the international community in affirming that there will be costs for any military intervention in Ukraine.”

I think if you look at it, this movement against Yanukovych’s corruption started quite spontaneously and was organic to Ukraine. Plus, all of Ukraine’s Churches placed the blame for the recent violence in Ukraine on Yanukovych. The clergy also held prayer meetings every morning in Independence Square (the Maidan) for the protestors, providing communion and confession, as they realized the incredibly corrupt and immoral system the ousted President Yanukovych was creating in the country was basically suicide for the country’s spiritual and material health. The latest from Ukraine’s religious bodies:

Council of Churches Expresses Support for Legitimate Ukrainian Government

The All-Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations (AUCCRO), which over the past three months has consistently defended the peaceful protests against the use of force and punishment, issued a statement on February 26 following a meeting with the leadership of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.

It the statement, the church representatives declare their readiness to work with the new government, strongly condemn any attempt to divide Ukraine, and stress the importance of preserving religious peace in the country.

The AUCCRO also called on citizens of Ukraine to “faithfully perform their official and public duties, respecting the current legislation and rejecting excessive emotion or fear of changes, which can only be for a better future,” reads the AUCCRO statement, the Institute for Religious Freedom reports.

This Council contains the hierarchs of the Roman and Ukrainian Catholic Churches, the Ukrainian Orthodox Churches, Ukraine’s rabbis, etc. One would be hard-pressed to call this body “secular”.

Its the Daily Mail, your wife is probably more quick-witted than half the journalists that work for that paper put together 😉

I have been screaming that from the hilltops since all of this talk about Russia and it’s “suddenly new found” popularity began here. I have been simply dumbfounded by it all. Now the tiger has shown it’s stripes. If there are still any holdouts, please consider the Russian nuclear destroyer now parked in Havana Bay Cuba.

:signofcross:

Why then, are the Russian soldiers devoid of all military insignia, and have refused to reveal their nationality to the foreign and Ukrainian press? Not trying to be combative here at all. I don’t deny that the US is secular, I don’t deny that we are certainly not pure as the driven snow, far from it. But this does not make Moscow’s intentions any less pure either.

While this is an unwelcome diversion from the topic, America is secular constitutionally speaking in a positive sense. Its secularism was created to foster and uphold religious freedom, the polar opposite of Laicite federalism in France. Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI praised American secularism highly as something to be protected - from the European model that is.

Just thought I would point that out.

whichcountry.co/top-5-countries-with-the-highest-total-number-of-abortions-in-the-world/

Abortion rates for the top 5 worst offenders:

Rank Country Number of Abortion Abortion Rate
Per 1000 Women
  1. China 7,930,000 26.1
  2. Russian Federation 2,287,300 68.4
  3. Vietnam 1,520,000 83.3
  4. United States 1,365,700 22.9
  5. Ukraine 635,600 57.2
I can cite other sources, with the same order, but really, google will work just as well for you.

Of these countries, secular or otherwise, who do you think has the most Catholic / Christian ministries world wide? Please bear this in mind before bashing US citizenry in this debate.

That’s nice.

My point wasn’t just the the timing, but the sneaky way they landed – not in uniform, without being announced, and stopping all airport traffic for their troop movements.

Those are three uncompromising elements that do not say, “Hey, we’re just here to do an exercise!” And frankly, combined with your smug finger pointing at everyone else’s ignorance, I’m shocked that you wouldn’t see it and again insulted that you would dare defend it as if you really do think others aren’t half as astute, traveled, or cultured as you.

The three elements I gave demonstrate terrorist tactics, not soldier’s tactics.

Context? You left out my last sentence when you quoted me.

Well, since it was pro-Putin posters that brought up abortion and the anti-homosexual propaganda first (not sure if you noticed that or not), it’s only fair that Esieffe does the same, and although abortions have dropped somewhat, I believe abortions still outnumber live births.
