How is nuclear war inevitable? What nukes have done is made a general war between the Great Powers less likely. It certainly makes proxy wars more common, which is very bad for those stuck in the middle of such conflicts, but they remain regional conflagrations, instead of massive military actions across large areas of Eurasia or any other continent.Well, it is the idea of the Catholic Church and its leaders.
The inevitable alternative to getting rid of our nukes is global nuclear war.
Is that a good idea?
Christian values do not dictate throwing down your sword when an enemy is threatening you with theirs. It’s going to take a paradigm shift for EVERYONE to be willing to put down their weapons at the same time, and I’m pretty sure myself that won’t happen until Jesus comes again.Christian values only go so far.
All I see is a lack of reasoning.Thank you, for this observation. In my opinion it demonstrates that the USA is not actually practicing Christian values.
Like I said, Christian values only go so far. The USA, the greatest self proclaimed Christian Nation…will not set the example…Christian values only go so far.Christian values do not dictate throwing down your sword when an enemy is threatening you with theirs. It’s going to take a paradigm shift for EVERYONE to be willing to put down their weapons at the same time, and I’m pretty sure myself that won’t happen until Jesus comes again.
where do you get the idea that the usa is practicing christian values? haven’t you noticed the direction obama took the nation? nothing christian about it.Thank you, for this observation. In my opinion it demonstrates that the USA is not actually practicing Christian values.
when did Jesus tell israel or rome to disarm? He acknowledges the evil in the world. He doesn’t teach like evil doesn’t exist. No place for nuclear weapons in Christianity
maybe the pope needs to comment on things he can actually influenceif you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one…
If you look at the sources, you will see that Pope Francis did not call for unilateral disarmament. It was the writer of the opinion piece, Jean-Marie Muller, who wrote it and incorrectly attributed it to Pope Francis.I would expect nothing less from Pope Francis…
Despite having nuclear weapons the USA has nontheless become involved in many wars. Our nukes did not deter the Vietnamese from overthrowing the puppet government and army that the French had set up, and they did not deter Russia and China from helping them to do that. How is nuclear war inevitable? What nukes have done is made a general war between the Great Powers less likely.
It is not proven that nuclear weapons have prevented a world war. That is speculation. The world has experienced many regional wars since 1945.The ‘long peace’ of the last 60+ years has saved many lives vs the history of wars. Nuclear weapons save lives through deterrence.
Yikes! Of course we can “unmake” our nuclear weapons (that’s what unilateral nuclear disarmament is all about.) We just lack the will to accomplish that together with the trust in our Creator that we have been mandated to hold.Unfortunately we do have nukes, and we can’t just learn how to unmake them. We will probably be in a good ole Mexican standoff with the other nuclear powers until the Second Coming.
