II will put it this way: if Biden had remained cordial and respectful while he was not speaking, he would have been the clear winner. Yet, his personal demeanor and his constant interruptions brought his overall performance down–which allowed the debate to be closer to a tie.
Agree with you. Biden did better than Ryan, but not by much due to his demeanor. Don’t know yet how that will translate for the presidential candidates on election day, though.

This is pretty historic, the first time two Catholics have squared against each other for the veep spot.
According to many in the church you can’t/be Catholic and pro choice. That being said, you have one practicing catholic running for VP and one who is catholic in name.

This was in response to the poster who said the christian right was invisible in this election and Jerry falwell will be rolling over in his grave
Sorry. I Should have followed the thread.

Just to add following my inelegant contribution.

The religious right, specifically evangelicals, are certainly behind Romney. No one should doubt that!

There is no ā€œCatholic in nameā€. Biden is Catholic, period.

Sorry, I don’t have time to read what everyone has posted here.
Biden was rudeā€¦ā€œmy friendā€ repeated one too many times for my comfort. Malarkey and stuff…where was Biden’s professionalism? Was Biden trying to play on Ryan’s Irish background…break and soften Ryan’s defense?
And the biggest problem with Biden…his very apparent change in demeanor from the beginning to end…almost like a dual personality…could be demonic possession and not just mentally ill. Just play Biden in the first two minutes of debate…and then play Biden in the last two minutes…Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde…scary.
Ryan was even tempered throughoutā€¦šŸ‘ That is what I look for.

What did you think about Biden’s response to abortion?
It’s not really related to what I wrote but I disagree with how he expressed himself.

But I stated he is Catholic and that is objectively true.

Who won the debate?
Ryan.

Biden came across as rude and afraid to let the opposition speak.

And one unarguable…the only unexpected applause from the audience came from a zinger provided by Ryan…
ā€œI think the vice president very well knows that sometimes the words don’t come out of your mouth the right way.ā€

The fact of your trouble finding such an animal speaks volumes for the compatibility of the current democratic party politics with the Catholic faith.
There are millions of Catholic Democrats.

Nearly the entire Continent of Europe leans further left than American Democrats- and that’s the conservative paties.

Many, many Catholics, myself included are left leaning and Catholic. I wouldn’t call myself a Democrat however, though I have never voted for a GOP.

3 cents deposited.

I’m not bothered by Biden, but what is important to me, unlike to other Catholics apparently, is the substance of their talk, not who is smiling and grinning. Do you think for even a second that Biden’s laughter is going to make people say,ā€œWell that does it for me. Biden was  disrespectful to Paul Ryan. Now I MUST vote for Romney.ā€ I think not, especially because Joe is Joe and we know his style.
I’m not sure of this. I’m one who always lifts an eyebrow, at least metaphorically, when I hear people complain about ā€œincivility in politicsā€ or ā€œfailure to work togetherā€. It’s politics, for goodness sake, and it’s adversarial, just like what you do for a living.

But a lot of people, apparently, don’t think of it that way, and really do expect politicians to be above such things. I’ll admit I’m usually baffled by that expectation. (Maybe I spent too many years in Dem politics) But a lot of people have it. That’s why, I guess, the Dem ads (and Biden last night, as well as Ryan) talk about the other side making it impossible to ā€œget alongā€. Their pollsters have told them, it would seem, that people expect something better than attack, attack, attack, and receive it with hostility when they think they see it.

If that’s really true, and not something people just say, Biden did not acquit himself well in the debate. I’ll admit I didn’t think it would make any difference at the time, but I have seen and heard so many people say it that I think the man probably did harm himself with the way he presented. And he might have hurt his cause as well, if people begin thinking ā€œWell, that’s why there are no solutions in sight. It’s because of people like Biden who insist on scorching the earth in every encounter.ā€

Guess we’ll see.

I’m middle class, I work. Members of my family and friends are not working, not by choice but to do economics (no blaming here, just stating what ā€œisā€)…so for them, no assistance…no help. Cardboard boxes under a bridge perhaps?

During the debate I was complaining that Ryan was not forceful enough. Reflecting on the event I cannot imagine a more aggressive Ryan would have worked w/ Biden’s strategy of talking-over & out of turn. Add the weak moderator into the mix and it’s a yelling match. Did you notice how often Ryan took a gulp of water? Ryan to self: drink some water & stay calm.
I was thinking the same thing the entire debate. Ryan was smooth…keeping an even temper throughout. Biden tore himself down with his own erratic behavior.

Frequent water drinking…will be part of the parody on Saturday Night Live this weekend…no doubt.

That’s because…he IS rude. Let the opposition speak? Heavens, no! Don’t disturb the left with either facts or reality.
