Why does Tom Brady get paid so much and the concession workers get minimum wages. Players with star status are way overpaid by their contracts. The NFL is very discriminatory. We need a law to make this fair.
Sounds good to me! I love football, but there’s no reason why a concession worker can’t make a living wage if that’s his full time job.

😃

Just because the Church in Rerum Novarum mentions the need for some income redistribution does not mean that the Church is condemning Capitalism
What it means is that just like statism where the state controls everything, the church is opposed to a LIBERAL capitalism where there are not enough regulations by the state. When Romney or the GOP/democrats would propose to limit Wall Street regulations, they likely are not concerned about the common good in the catholic sense. The catholic church certainly supports the free-market system though given solidarity and subsidiarity.
Caritas in veritate: Both the regulation of the financial sector, so as** to safeguard weaker parties and discourage scandalous speculation**, and experimentation with new forms of finance, designed to support development projects, are positive experiences that should be further explored and encouraged
Because a mom and pop business would never take advantage of their employees.
This is like saying that because in a traditional marriage, children have been physically or sexually abused, we should support a gay marriage down the street where this isn’t occurring. What is your point?

Huh? that doesn’t even make sense.

People argue that because there are bad examples of traditional marriage that we should accept gay marriage because they will be no worse. This is like arguing for Walmart because a mom and pop store treated their employees poorly.

That still doesn’t make sense. How many mom&pops give their employees the type of benefits and pay that Wal-Mart does? Few if any.

That doesn’t make sense. Do you have any evidence to back that up? I work for a mom and pop and get paid highly in lieu of benefits.

That’s the point, your Mom&Pop doesn’t give you benefits. Walmart does. Also I’m curious how many employees work at the Mom&Pop, cause you do realize large corporations are regulated by law to provide benefits to its employees that smaller businesses Mom&Pop are not subject to.

Hence, if your Mom&Pop had 50,000 employees instead of 50 (I’m purely speculating) then you would be getting more benefits and less pay. Once again got a problem? Blame the regulations not Walmart.

Lack of benefits:
ABSTRACT: Although employer-sponsored health insurance forms the backbone of the health insurance system in the United States, small businesses are finding it increasingly difficult to provide their workers with comprehensive coverage. In 2007, only 25 percent of employees in small businesses had coverage through their own employers, compared with 74 percent of workers in large firms. Because there are few sources of affordable coverage outside the employer-based system, millions of employees in small businesses are uninsured or have inadequate health insurance. In 2007, 52 percent of workers in small businesses were uninsured or underinsured during the year, compared with half as many employees in large businesses. Congressional bills to reform the health system include provisions specifically aimed at helping small businesses and their employees gain access to affordable, comprehensive coverage.

Lack of pay:
Small retailers typically offer employees fewer hours, lower wages and fewer employee benefits than large retailers. If money and benefits drive your career plans, these realities can convince you to look for career opportunities with bigger retail organizations.

Do you have anything that says differently?

.
Or in many cases the mom and pop are required to follow - but don’t because they know the Dept of Labor wage and hour enforcement will never audit them.

Should they be required to work concessions on Thanksgiving? How about Sundays? I realize you love football, but I don’t see in your 😃 any mention of the non-essential nature of football and the right of these workers to be at home with their families. Perhaps, concession workers and football players should walk out this Thanksgiving weekend.

Okay Pork, you’re the CEO of Walmart. This year, Walmart had roughly $16 Billion in Net Income…what would you do with it?

Honestly, I’ve always felt bad for the players that are in the Thanksgiving games because they can’t have the day with their families-and the same for everyone else connected-like the TV guys. Same for the NBA players on Christmas! That would stink! Lots of them have young kids too, so it makes it even worse.

As for Sundays-I work Sundays, so I know that sometimes there are jobs that involve working on the traditional weekends. Those of us that work those days have our days off at other times. We simply adjust our schedules to what our “weekend” is. Around my job, one of the most common questions when you make new friends is “When is your weekend?” to see if you can make plans. The longer you’re working with our company the more likely you are to get weekends off-and a lot of us who don’t have kids will take the “weekend” during the week to leave those days open for those folks.

Right, but earlier in the thread you justified your working Sundays by the fact that it was a hotel. You are correct that some jobs/businesses have to be open on Sunday - certainly, hotels, hospitals, etc. Football? Not so much.

So, in the interest of fairness and consistency since you joined in the chorus of people refraining from shopping on black Friday, holidays and Sundays, you should encourage people to refrain from watching any football on Sundays and holidays. It’s the right thing to do…unless you prefer to be a hypocrite.

Did I NOT say in that same post that I don’t like that the players and TV guys have to be away from their families on the holidays-or was I dreaming that part?

As for football, their schedule is like mine-they have other “weekends” that aren’t Saturday and Sunday. It’s not like they are denied time off completely because they play on Sundays.

As far as holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas-I would LOVE it if “all unessential personnel” were able to spend those days with their families. That’s my CONSISTENT position whether you like it or not. Obviously, there will always be some jobs that must be done, and mine will likely be one of them- but the number of them could seriously be reduced. I’m talking to you Sears, Walmart, Target, Kmart, Kohls…and all the crazy consumers who are either already in line or planning to go out to buy stuff they don’t need with money they don’t have on Thanksgiving day.

I would love to see a movement among Christians to reclaim Sundays and holidays for Church and family and simply stop joining the frenzy.
…and football.

Sure. Consistent. Some jobs must be done…like football and the concessions that go with it. And, some workers’ schedules are like yours and have other “weekends…” like workers at Walmart and Target, whom you are complaining about. Completely consistent.

The only thing that appears to be consistent is your personal distaste for Walmart and Target as companies. You are very flexible on the rest of your views regarding working Sundays and holidays. Essential services? Sure. Non-essential services? It depends on what they are…football gets a big thumbs up.

Ok, so I guess it’s pointless to type my own words because you’ll just make up what you want me to say anyway.

Have a nice day.

Words don’t mean much, when they aren’t consistent. It’s talking just to talk. Your concern for football players and concessions ring completely hollow when contrasted to the vitriol you spew for retail establishments.

You have a nice day, too. 🙂
