Forced? You mean they want to maintain or increase their profits rather than provide health insurance for their employees.

I don’t call that “being forced”.

The protester would have better spent their time with their families. Or if they were supposed to work, tending to their job so they do not face disciplinary action or termination.

Sometimes you have to speak up for yourself. Wal-Mart is a monolith- It would take something huge to hurt them.

JCPenny put out an ad specifically saying that Thanksgiving was for families, and that they would be open on Black Friday at 6am. (Not before that.) I am not normally a Black Friday shopper at all. I hate the long lines and chaos. However, I just had to go out and support JCP today. DH needed those dress shirts anyway, and I feel like I made a small statement. Outside of essential services like hospitals/police/media/armed forces/etc… NO ONE should have to work on a holiday. It doesn’t matter what their ‘class’ is or what job they have. I never go shopping on Holidays or Sundays. People who do frustrate me.

I believe that the man J.C. Penny was very religious. Nice to see they kept some of his spirit.
 
walkout was an utter failure. only handful of associates joined in and Wal-Mart is having their biggest Black Friday ever. Almost makes you think wal-mart was behind the protest…

It was good advertising for them. Everyone in the country knows they are having a big Black Friday sale today…

JCPenny is a very vocal proponent of gay marriage.They ran ads on Father’s Day that by and large reflected their support.

James Cash Penney became a devout Christian after a bout with pneumonia that nearly took his life. He was a mentor of one Sam Walton.

If we don’t shop on holidays, then stores (not just WalMart) will find it unprofitable to open on those days.

Let’s do our shopping before or after a holiday, not on the holiday itself, so that more people will be able to spend the holidays with their families.

I agree. The stores only open because there is enough demand out there to justify paying employees to work on that day. I actually felt a little guilty because, on Thanksgiving, I went to the corner store to get a couple of jars of turkey gravy (in case I didn’t get enough drippings from the turkey). I should have been more prepared and had the jars on hand instead of having to go to the store on Thanksgiving. I probably shouldn’t feel that guilty, but I did a little–I felt sort of bad for the employees. We truly have become a 24/7 society.
 
Walmart pushes healthcare for its workers on the taxpayers. The US government is subsidizing Walmart’s operations, since a sizable proportion of its employees are eligible for Medicaid and food stamps, because their wages are so low - that is corporate welfare as its most pernicious. The taxpayers overtly subsidizing private profits. Then the GOP complains about these ‘moochers’ wanting to reduce Medicaid and food stamps.

It is time that the minimum wage be raised from the $7.25 per hour it has been at since 2009, while the cost of living has increased considerably. This would not only reduce government expenditure, but would also stimulate the economy in general.

Walmart is the company that has set the standard for the others and has made these practices acceptable.

Plus the fact they open stores on Thanksgiving Day turning an otherwise religious holiday to one of crass consumerism.

Plus, why shop at a place that builds the economy of a communist country?
Walmart a company that earns a net income of $15.4 billion on $422 billion of revenue with a 24.7% gross profit margin! :eek:

Do you realize how high the minimum wage would have to be raised in order for folks to purchase their own health insurance? Most truly middle class (even upper middle class) families couldn’t afford to purchase their own insurance without sacrificing their housing or a major portion of their food budget, thereby drastically reducing their quality of life. Family insurance costs over $1000 per month in most areas of the country (almost $1300/mo in mine). You would need to raise the minimum wage quite a bit.
 
minimum wage jobs were never intended to be anything other than entry level positions,held largely by high school age and those needing part time work.To raise the minimum wage to the level you suggest would be unsustainable for most if not all companies.

Where are the tablets of stone that “rule” is written on?

And it’s not “unsustainable”-that’s a myth. Profits would rise, revenues to state, local and federal governments would rise, entitlement costs would go down, and jobs would be created by the thousands. There are studies out there that confirm this-I posted one PAGES ago on this thread, but it and others like it don’t agree with the established CAF consensus so it was ignored.

I have an individual policy and I pay over $1000 per month for it. I’ve been wearing the same clothes for years, don’t go on nice vacations and my vehicle is over 11 years old. Why? Because I need health insurance. There isn’t any money left over after I pay my insurance.

I’m curious. I hear over and over again that employees should be paid a fair wage. What do you consider a fair wage for someone with or without a high school diploma or GED who stocks shelves or is a cashier?

ooops, I asked 😃

I’m a different generation. I was told that if I wanted to make decent money I had to go to college and work hard. Sometimes I would win and sometimes I’d lose. That salaries are based on level of knowledge required or physical demand. Of course my other option, which is what my kindergarten teacher told my parents, was that I wasn’t nearly as intelligent as my brother…that I wouldn’t amount to anything and that the best they could hope for was that I’d marry well.:rolleyes:
