Wasn't there an actual ark?

You are correct, but if they were on the Ark, they could certainly feed from the huge strawman arguments you have just given them to eat…
No, there is very little nutrition in straw – it’s mostly silica. Hay might work for some of the creatures. But Noah would have had to include several tons of eucalyptus leaves for the koalas, so a stop by Australia was necessary before it was completely submerged. Also, stops in Africa and North America were needed to pick up food for the megafauna from those continents.👍

since the bible doesn’t say there weren’t more than one arkes, the the solution is now clear.

Task Force Noah
Flag Officer Noah, Commanding
was built around *Ye Arke *and supporting vessels

Ye Arke,
Capt. Ham, Commanding

Supply Arke No. 1 (fodder)
Lt. Shem, Commanding

Supply Arke No. 2 (carnivorous animal feed)
Lt. Japheth, Commanding

Interesting proposal. How long do you calculate it would take to collect the dietary-specific fodder for 30 million species? It ain’t gonna walk there on its own!😉

Supply Ark #2 would have to have hundreds of thousands of prey animals for the carnivores, because many carnivores are prey-species-specific. There is no generic “meat kind” to substitute for the prey eaten by African lions, Indian tigers, North American cougars, Costa Rican jaguars, Himalayan snow leopards, Iberian wolves, etc.

Perhaps God magically reduced each prey animal to sort of generic “hot dogs” that could keep the carnivores alive. Noah could have had refrigeration units in Supply Ark # 2, powered by Japheth walking in a huge exercise wheel.👍

In my RCIA class today, we were talking about the Old Testament. The person leading the class said that that there wasn’t a literal Noah’s Ark. I’ve never heard that in my life before and it really is concerning me. Is that the official teaching of the Catholic Church and if so, where would I find it in the Catechism?

FWIW, even if there was an an ark-sized boat on top of a mountain range in Armenia, that would not tell anyone thing about the relation of the Genesis texts to actual reality. It would, at most, merely be compatible with the notion that the Genesis ark was real; but it would not be proof of the historicality of the text.

Someone has probably made this point already - but it’s worth making, just in case no one has.

Don’t let it worry you: salvation is through Christ - not through a boat. Christ died for our sins: not the ark, or Noah. The Cross is the only piece of wood we need to bother with, & only because of Christ. 🙂 We can perfectly well be sinners, & need salvation, & be saved by Christ, even if Noah & Co. are all fictitious: sin is not made into a myth merely by being accounted for by myths.

But not even the Good Lord could cram 30 million species into the Ark!
Are you suggesting that God, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen, is not capable of doing this?

I’m going to assume that you include water animals in that 30 million species in which case I would say they do not need to be on the ark if they can live in the water…if that makes sense:shrug:

Ahoy, ahoy- the poop deck must have really been overused:D

Sad to say, the Fundamentalists never take responsibility for the…ah…expelled matter.

Yet it is their doctrine - no one else’s - that makes them responsible for that stuff; they put it all there, so they can clean it all up. Animals (including people) do expel such things, so such things can’t simply be ignored. If, OTOH, all the animals went into suspended animation, it is only fair to tell us how this can be known. Otherwise, such an explanation is no more legitimate than explaining the absence of the “left-overs” by saying that they were cleared away by invisible leprechauns: not all explanations are equally plausible - even if all explanations serve to protect some feature of the Bible.

God is not capable of the impossible.

Noah will need aquaria (glass, fiberglass, or polycarbonate) for all the freshwater species of fish and invertebrates. These aquaria will need to have electric-motor-driven aeration, heating, and lighting systems to keep the fish alive for the duration of the flood. The ark engineering team will need to calculate in the weight of the aquaria, equipment, and fresh water.

You are looking too much into things with science, if you are truly Christian and have faith you should know that nothing is impossible through God. This is something that is really a matter of faith, like the doctrine of the Trinity. Nowhere in the Bible does it directly state there is a Trinity, but as faithful Christians, we believe.

That would not fulfil the script, which requires all creatures in which was the breath of life to die. What is the good of insisting on some features of the script, & not others 🙂 ?

As to the capability argument: it includes far too much, so it solves nothing. If we use it, then “God could” teleport all living things to the planet Krypton, to keep them from being corrupted in the first place. The Bible nowhere excludes this, & if the Patriarchs were originally from Krypton (why otherwise do Kryptonians have names including the element “-el” ?) many Bible difficulties would be solved. 😉

the bible does not directly rule out marine diesels as ye arke’s powerplants. that’s why I Believe they must have been present.

Nowhere in the Bible does it say that the Genesis story is not to be read as symbolic language. And if you’re worried about my focusing on science, then you have to confront the serious challenges of the capacity of the ark, which you have conveniently refused to face.

The bible also does not rule out glass aquaria and electric-powered ventilation, aeration, heating and cooling systems. And of course GPS so that Noah could navigate back to Ararat after dropping the marsupials off in Australia.

its worth another mention. if you choose to believe in an actual ye arke, just say its a miracle and end the argument by keeping science out of the equation. don’t thereafter try to debate the mechanics with biologists, naval architects, marine engineers, weathermen, physicists or archeologists.

you’ll lose and look silly in the process.

Ah but you see God didn’t build the Ark- man did. Noah had the blueprints given to him by God but then Noah did the rest.If God fit all 30 million critters on the Ark then why would He ask Noah to build an Ark? God , who gave the blueprints to Noah, would have to countermand His own orders of Ark dimensions or God would have let Noah build an Ark then supernaturally made the ark large enough for millions of creatures! Why? To what purpose? Why have a human involved at all?Ah, but that’s one of the points of the story.God and Noah work hand in hand.- God and humans work towards salvation.God gave Noah the free will to obey His commands and to act in unison with Him- just as Abraham, and Moses and Mary- said “yes” to God’s will. to pull some magic trick to fulfill what WE think God could have done would be to deny man’s part in it, his free will to obey and our active part in God’s plans for the salvation of all. If God gave us free will, then He cannot take it away and usurp our part in His plan. To do otherwise would be a contradiction on God’s part- and God cannot be other the what He is. Besides these chapters -up to chapter twelve are not that important. they are but a prologue to the main parts of the story- How the Israelites became the Chosen People and the Patriarchs whose cooperation with God made all of salvation history possible. Pax:thumbsup:

When were 30 million species created? 🙂
Have faith.

I looked up the story on Noah and the Ark. It can be found in Gen.Chapters 6-9
If God was actually speaking to you and told you to build an Ark because He was going to flood earth, would you obey?
The Bible doesn’t mention 30 million species , only seven pairs of all clean animals, male and it’s mate. seven pairs of birds of the air, male and female. And creeping things.
Many folks do wonder how this was accomplised, but as you know it was done with the Lord’s help. God took care of the details while Noah was building the Ark.

I was thinking, if it was you, you’d be asking lame-brain questions about how can I do this. lol
With God everything is possible.
Go to Gen and read all about it. Pray first.

God bless you,
jean8

What you should be asking about the Ark is why did The Lord ask Noah to build it? God was about to flood the entire earth. Do you know why?

there’s been serious discussion of late about whether noah used a walking beam steam engine or a gas turbine. what do you think?

*If *the entire earth - as we know it - was flooded, this would require far more water than could possibly have dried by the time allowed in the script for Noah & family & animals to disembark. This great mass of water would have been so heavy that the earth’s rotation would have been affected.

It’s much much much much more likely that we should think of the earth as the compiler/author/editor of the text knew it. For him/them/her (?) (why not ?), the whole earth was far smaller than it is for us.

When an Assyrian king - such as that great warrior Ashur-nasir-pal II (883-858) 🙂 - calls himself “king of the world”, he is not claiming to be king over Australia, Tristan da Cunha, China or Greenland. he & his fellows is interpreted in his context: one that was familiar with what (from several later POVs, of which ours is one) was a small segment of the globe. What makes the geographical knowledge of the book of Genesis (which is roughly as old) any different in its geographical (& hydrological) knowledge ? If the answer is “inspiration”, the answer to that is, “How come ?”

Genesis is inspired - that does not require or imply any knowledge in advance of the author’s time: it requires God’s activity, not excellence of knowledge in man.

“Everything is possible” (with God) does not account for anything: why did God not convert everyone instead of drowning them ? He could have, but did not. “God can”, unless carefully defined, allows us to make no end of loopy suggestions as to how the ark contained what is said to have contained. “God could” miniaturise all the animals, in the manner of “Fantastic Voyage” - it is safe to say this did not occur.
