Archbishop Niederauer apologizes for giving Communion to “Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence” at San Francisco Parish

San Francisco, Oct 12, 2007 / 09:15 am (CNA).- In a column to appear on Sunday, October 19 on “Catholic San Francisco,” Archbishop George H. Niederauer apologizes for giving communion to two members of the militant anti-Catholic homosexual group “Sister of Perpetual Indulgence”.
The Archbishop of San Francisco says in his column that “a recent event that greatly concerns me needs some additional explanation – and with it an apology.”

Thanks for posting that buffalo.
I respect the Bishop for his apology. It is gratifying that he realized a mistake and is sorry. That’s what we are all about.

Not doing so and being silent would have been damaging to all Catholics.

We need courageous Catholics to stand for God’s fchurch.

Catholic News Agency:
The “sisters”, dressed in costume and white facial paint, and with names such as “Sister Porn Again” and “Sister Roz Erection,” were given the Eucharist by Archbishop George Niederauer at the Most Holy Redeemer parish in San Francisco.
The CNA account seems to differ from the Archbishop’s.

Archbishop:
At Communion time, toward the end of the line, two strangely dressed persons came to receive Communion. As I recall one of them wore a large flowered hat or garland. I did not recognize either of them as wearing mock religious garb.
Were there only two SPI members at the mass? How were they dressed?

I am not familiar with the organization, but in going to their website, it appears the SPI members are dressed most often like clowns rather than women religious.

If two SPI members came forward in full clown regalia, why would the Archbishop be expected to identify them as unworthy to receive communion?

In the video of the Mass, it looks like the Bishop balked at first with the most colorful “sister”, but he freely gave the host to the second one that was dressed closer to a nun. Why didn’t he just tell them no? He says he has seen pictures of them before. How could he think anyone dressed as they were would even respect the church enough to recieve the Eucharist? I have a hard time accepting his apology. What is done, is done.

I just saw that O’Reilly is going to have this story as his main segment on the O’Reilly Factor tonight (10/12)…and he covered it in his radio program as well…

As far as causing scandal, I think the scandal is about to be multiplied 10 fold…but hopefully Pope Benedict watches FOX News…? :crossrc:

I kept faith an announcement like this would eventually come, and I guess it paid off. Thank God! 👍

For me the Archbishop’s explanation and apology are good enough, and hopefully this scandal will be for the most part nipped in the bud. But one wonders if there was some communication from the Holy See on the matter.

Anyway, no SSPX chapel for me…😉

It took a real man to make that statement. Now that he has had this experience, he may well emerge more clearly as the kind of Bishop that every faithful Catholic is eager to rally around in the task of defending the Faith and the Church.

It may yet turn out that the mockers have, by this action, made things more difficult for themselves than if they hadn’t done it at all. If so, serves them right.

Blessings,

Gerry

Yes, this news certainly deserves its own thread. It is wonderful!👍

This is my response to it in another thread.

Yes, he made a mistake and did the right thing in apologizing for it. This should clear the air as to what he tolerates and what doesn’t.

Are men dressed in women’s clothing normally allowed to receive communion? The bishop might just have had a hard time differentiating the sincere weirdos from the rebellious weirdos at that parish he had never been to.

They did stand out like sore thumbs, didn’t they? Wonder what he thought when he saw them out in the congregation. Couldn’t hardly miss them in that crowd!

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH! Bill O’Reilly is M A D!!!

He wants the Catholic Church to sue those men and the mayor and San Fran!

Bill O’Reilly just showed a video clip of the grossly ugly “sisters in drag” going to the Archbishop to receive communion.

In fairness to the Bishop, he did put his hand out (in a stop fashion) to the first sister in drag, and looked as though he was questioning him. The drag sister responded with what appeared to be some kind of explanation. The bishop then gave him communion. [It’s too darn bad he didn’t refuse him, he would have had full support from many, many Catholics].

Next, the second drag sister came up and it looked like the Bishop relunctantly gave her communion. [This is not good, IMHO]

People on the Bill O’Reilly show are saying the Bishop was caught off guard, and is elderly, etc…

To me this underscores the fact that the Vatican needs to step in where San Francisco is involved – it is a situation completely out of control.

In light of the spiritual battle going on in San Francisco, the Pope should appoint a new, younger Archbishop, one with fire in the belly.

I vote for the promotion and relocation of Father John Corapi.

Next, he should assign REAL Sisters of Our Lady of Perpetual Help – or very devout contemplatives to PRAY San Francisco into repentance.

I was very angry and upset about those drag queens and the bishop, etc. Then I thought about my own parish and what I have seen there and believe me this is as far from San Francisco as you can get. Teenage girls going to communion dressed like Tinker Bell. Altar boys (and girls) in rubber flip flops, cut offs, etc. Anyway there is very little reverence shown. It is a sad state of affairs.
