Here is the prelude to the opera Lohengrin, by Richard Wagner. According to the composer, the music depicts the Holy Grail, borne aloft by the angelic host, descending to earth in a blaze of color and flame, where it renews the faith of disillusioned mankind before ascending again to its celestial home. This visceral music has the ability to stir the soul like no other. Emerging gently from utter silence, it builds slowly and inexorably to a shattering climax before dying away to the ethereal strains of the opening bars. I weep every time I hear it.
Here is Love is Blue. It is familiar to fans of, ahem, a certain age (like yours truly) from Paul Mauriat’s instrumental version, which went to number one in the USA and stayed there for five weeks in late winter 1968. This, however, is the vocal original, introduced by Vicky (Leandros) at the 1967 Eurovision song contest.
