They use that hymn for the popular Christmas hymn, What Child is this? But I think you already know that.

Yes, many secular tunes were fitted with sacred words to turn them into hymns. Joyful, joyful, we adore Thee is the Ode to Joy theme from Beethoven’s ninth symphony, and someone made a choir version of Barber’s Adagio by wrenching the music round, Procrustes-fashion, to fit the words of the Agnus Dei. Not always the happiest of operations, in the main because the composer was not writing his music to a sacred text in the first place. Had that been the case, he’d have written completely different music.

Here is another one of my favorites. It’s about Chiune Sugihara, a Japanese diplomat who saved thousands of Jewish people during World War II.

I immediately thought of that Abbott and Costello movie when I first heard the song long ago. I’m not sure that anyone has ever asked Lightfoot if that was in fact where the lyrics came from.

A heartbreaking cover of Stephen Sondheim’s Send in the Clowns, by Welsh singer Bryn Terfel.

The incomparable Ian and Sylvia:

The one and only Bill Medley:
