Yes, many secular tunes were fitted with sacred words to turn them into hymns. Joyful, joyful, we adore Thee is the Ode to Joy theme from Beethoven’s ninth symphony, and someone made a choir version of Barber’s Adagio by wrenching the music round, Procrustes-fashion, to fit the words of the Agnus Dei. Not always the happiest of operations, in the main because the composer was not writing his music to a sacred text in the first place. Had that been the case, he’d have written completely different music.They use that hymn for the popular Christmas hymn, What Child is this? But I think you already know that.
