Just finished Memoirs of a Geisha. Very good book and interesting read. Now I want to go see the movie.

The movie will probably will be considerably different than the book. The book is usually much better because it allows us to use our own imagination, but I still want to see the movie.

I’m finally on the last book! I’m enjoying the references to other works by King. 😃 Not to mention King himself being in this book. Or was that the last? Ha! Getting confused here. It’s good, but it just won’t work reading it in bed, and I haven’t been reading sitting up as much as I was.

Anyway, besides The Dark Tower VII , I’m reading The Wild Road by Gabriel King, which is a fantasy story starring cats, and The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner. I am thoroughly aggravated with this last book. I’m forcing myself to finish it to see if there is some point to certain aspects of the author’s writing. I’m thinking he was drunk and/or stoned out of his mind while writing parts of this thing. :eek:

You should know by now that there is no such thing as lending a book…they never come back…consider them a gift!
 
I just finished “Lamb’s Supper” and “Letter and Spirit” by Scott Hahn. That guy is good! :bowdown: I’m planning to read “Hail Holy Queen” next.
 
I need to get back into The Trouble with Islam, and no, it isn’t want you think, so don’t even start I will be forced to be civil no longer.
 
I just p/u A Place of Execution by Val McDermid. Several people have told me it is a real page turner.

Oh wonderful book! I’ve reread it a few times too. I’m finishing up A Tree Grows in Brooklyn which I read about once every few years since I was a child. I love that book!
 
Mother Angelica by Raymond Arroyo and Women Who Made The World Worse by Kate O’Beirne
 
I just finished the the Autobiography of Archbishop Fulton Sheen (what a guy, I wish I could’ve seen his show) and am now reading Be Cool by Elmore Leonard. I have to mix my beneficial reading with my popcorn books! 🙂

Ciao,

I was given a book by a Catholic friend for Christmas. It is called “Be Not Afraid, Insights for the Journey to Holiness”. I have been trying to get some other viewpoints on this book. It seems to me to be more mainstream than Catholic. I have concerns over this and my friends participation in this author’s Bible studies. If I remember correctly, it was published in 2004. I can’t find any book reviews on it on the web.

Has anyone else read it?

Yes, I forgot that was the title. I read it yesterday afternoon–I put it down and couldn’t stop. I’ve got all these little pieces of paper marking things I want to write down for myself (the book’s from my parish library, so I’ll have to give it back soon!) I was blown away. Something that he said that really stood out to me was when he talked about having to give up the “I” so that God can work through us. How we need to stop focusing on what “I” want and rather on what He wants. It seems really obvious but it really touched me.
 
I just finished One Year Off, by David Elliot Cohen, and, as one who doesn’t travel much, I really enjoyed it

It’s no biggie, but if you’ve ever wondered what it might be like to take the family and just travel around the world for a year, this is one family’s experience. Be very careful of the hippos.

Mr. Blue by Myles Connolly. This very Catholic novella was originally published in 1928. It has had a profound affect on me. Connolly was a Hollywood Screenwriter and Producer, most famous for his association with the classic films It Happened One Night and State Of The Union. He apparently was also a devout Catholic and this book shows it. The main character J. Blue is a Jazz Age St. Francis. He is the anti-Gatsby. It is 115 pages of dynamite.

Mr. Blue! Wow! This book was very popular when I was in college. (That kind of dates me, but no, it wasn’t 1928!) I knew one girl who claimed to have read it 50 times.
