America Beyond Capitalism by Gar Alperovitz

Pretty interesting so far. It’s not simply a pro socialist book as opposed to capitalism. And the author clearly knows his stuff as he’s cited Hayek, James Buchanan and Robert Nisbet approvingly. Most important, what I’ve read so far isn’t opposed to Catholic social teaching.

Reading a few right now. Fear and Trembling by Søren Kierkegaard, which is an examination of Abraham’s faith before and leading up to the non-sacrifice of Isaac.

Also reading The Plague by Albert Camus, a story about a plague, of course.

Recently finished Love for the Papacy and Filial Resistance to the Pope in the History of the Church (Robert ode Mattei, Angelico Press 2019). Very good selection of essays by a renowned Catholic historian, which puts the current crisis into perspective.

Currently busy with Christus Vincit: Christ’s Triumph Over the Darkness of the Age which is a book length interview of Bishop Athanasius Schneider by Diane Montagna (Angelico Press, 2019). His Grace talks about his childhood, his ordination to the priesthood, his missionary work in Brazil, and gives his perspective on the crises currently facing the Church as well as possible solutions he recommends…

I am reading ‘My Daily Bread’ by Anthony J. Paone, S.J.
Lately I feel I need some guidance and understanding and peace in this unpredictable time. A GREAT Book!

I have Treasure in Clay and America’s Bishop, a biography of Archbishop Sheen. It fills in the gaps in his autobiography (like his tete a tete with ++Spellman).

I don’t know if I still have that one (it was the original from the 1960s).

I have Divine Intimacy and tried to get The Real Presence but didn’t succeed (it was out of stock).

True story:

When I was in college, our off-campus Catholic community center had an entire Fathers of the Church series. I found the volume of St. John Damascene De fide and in it he lists 100+ heresies. I read Arianism and chuckled “That’s dumb. Everybody knows that Jesus is God.” (That’s how naive I was 😱).

So I read further and the more I read, the more nervous I got. At one point in his list of heresies, I was shocked and felt like St. John was pointing his finger at me, saying: “THAT’S YOU”. I panicked and ran to Father. “Father, I’m a heretic!” “Margaret, calm down!” “But Father, I don’t want to be a heretic! Can you please hear my confession?” He did, and I was immensely relieved.

Since then, I haven’t read that book of St. John Damascene.

Moral: The Fathers of the Church are swordmasters of Sacred Scripture (c.f. Eph. 6: 10-17). Don’t mess around with them.

Any books! 🙂

Broken But Loved: Healing Through Christ’s Power by George Maloney SJ and A General Theory of Authority by Yves R. Simon.

Dang that’s heavy. Why are you reading that? I admit I’ve thought of reading something of his besides the Satanic Bible but I just get uncomfortable when I get ready to.

I’m a student of comparative religion. I spend a lot of my money researching various religions. Some people are passionate about cars, sports, music, fashion or what have you; I am passionate about religions. That’s my main hobby – I’m a researcher.

Ever studied Christian Science? Grew up in it and don’t have pleasant things to say about it.
