What in your opinion is specifically wrong with modern American Television?

But the British still manage to get good series produced even today (Doc Martin, etc.), with great actors. Every generation should produce great actors I would think - writers, dramatists, musicians. What’s up? I feel the same way about most of today’s film on the large screen too (lacks substance or real lasting value). Perhaps it is just going after money here in the US after all; aim it at teenagers - biggest draw.

I did enjoy Doc Martin.
One thing I believe is often overlooked. The last generation of writers viewed the world from the written word. This new generation seems to view the world from the perspective of comic books. Simplistic, childish, and lacking anything of artistic value.
 
So called reality TV shows…total garbage… commercials talking about erectile dysfunction…

You obviously believe the only thing wrong with modern American television is that it does not show enough debauchery and depravity. Fine, go to town. There’s plenty of that all over the place.
I would rather focus on the violence and gore on modern TV. Are you ok with that too? If so, tell us why.

Networks do reality shows because they are cheaper to make. “Reality show stars” are not considered actors and thus do not belong to a union or need to be paid a ton of money for their presence on a show.
 
Yes, reality shows are cheaper to make but I don’t think watching videos of people injuring themselves qualifies as entertainment. Something else to consider is that some people are disgusted by the actor shows on TV. They don’t want to watch them.

The only one I watch is American Pickers. No injuries there, unless they are attacked by antiques.I know its fake, but I love the old stuff they find.
 
It’s demonstrably harmful to a person’s brain and personality to engage in hours of passive entertainment. It robs a person of initiative and creativity, and the ability to think. There have been a lot of studies on the damage passive entertainment has done to our people.

Reading is different. It seems passive, but it is not. Reading engages the imagination. It requires some effort.

Television is akin to idol worship, staring worshipfully at a thing, soaking in whatever it spits out.

Well, I don’t think everyone watches it that way. I live alone, so I find it handy to watch TV or a DVD while I do housework and things.

Most TV is too boring to just sit there staring at it. But I admit to the vice of watching TV while playing games on my tablet. (I particularly like farming games. :D)

Sometimes I listen to TV while I read. That probably just makes me a bit scattered.

Anyway, it’s probably a good thing that TV is so bad. If it were good, it would be a lot more tempting to watch it the way you are talking about.

They don’t make shows like All in the Family, Seinfeld, I Love Lucy, Carol Burnett, or the like anymore. There’s no more real comedic talent on television.

Today’s shows are just mindless and stupid. And I do agree that our culture mocks Christianity in ways they’d never dream of doing to Muslims or Jews. The Jews are smart; they have the ADL and lots of lawyers lined up to make a stink when they feel offended. Muslims would be ready to riot, kill, and blow things up if their religion were to be mocked. They’ve already done so, as seen in the aftermath of the Muhammad cartoon. Lots of people don’t remember that ISIS claimed responsibility for a terror attack in Garland, Texas in May, because they were upset over a Muhammad cartoon contest there. Perhaps Christians should taken a cue from our Jewish elders in faith and organize ourselves like the ADL.

Where do today’s comedians hone their skill? The comedians of the past labored in vaudeville, nightclubs, comedy clubs, and on stage. They learned to be funny from being in a room with people who weren’t laughing. Jackie Gleason used to say he preferred doing comedy in front of an audience, because of the energy it generated.
These one-camera sitcoms they make today don’t have that same energy.

Most comedy today is about Issue Advocacy, profanity and graphic sexual material. There are no jokes anymore, just filth and Whoopi Goldberg explaining Leviticus to her audience as part her “act.” I won’t name other names because comedy is dead.

Jokes used to be harmless and/or clever and clean. The worst you could get was Don Rickles.

Give me Red Skelton any day. I met a stand-up comic recently. There are “comedy clubs” in the area. I would never go. He defended profanity in comedy as “as long as it was funny.” Nope - too many lines have been crossed. Too many.

Older comedians, like Jack Benny and George Burns, used to look down their noses at those who used profanity in their acts, calling it a lack of talent.

Personally, I think the amount of garbage on TV today is due to writers wishing to justify their own sinful behaviour. So of course they’re going to promote whatever sin they’re involved in while at the same time ridiculing Christianity. It’s an attempt to ease one’s own conscience.

The more acceptable a sin becomes in our secular society, the less guilty they feel.

I read this on another forum (not here): “We no longer want to feel guilty or ashamed or sinful ever again.” On a TV show, a gay character tells another man to “Let go of your guilt.” The other man turned out to not be gay.

Shameless behavior, especially by young female celebrities - bad. The same for males.

Guilt-free immoral behavior - bad.

Sin being mocked or discarded or relativized - bad.

Yes, the producers and writers want us to believe in the world they live in. To actually act it out in our own lives to some degree. “It’s all good.” 100% wrong.

The group “One Million Moms” is protesting the TV program “Lucifer.” From their site:

"The series focuses on Lucifer portrayed as a good guy “who is bored and unhappy as the Lord of Hell.” He resigns his throne, abandons his kingdom, and retires to Los Angeles, where he gets his kicks helping the LAPD punish criminals.

“At the same time, God’s emissary, the angel Amenadiel, has been sent to Los Angeles to convince Lucifer to return to the underworld. Lucifer questions Amenadiel, “Do you think I’m the devil because I’m inherently evil or just because dear old Dad decided I was?” The question is meant to make people rethink assumptions about good and evil, including about God and Satan.”
