A Baltimore Oriole visited the feeder yesterday! A not so often visit around these parts. Would an orange be tempting for a return visit?

Generally, you want to have your oranges out before the first males arrive. That way if they’re trying to stake out a territory they might consider your neighborhood to set one up. If they’re just passing through, and you don’t have oranges out it’s already too late. You might attract any stragglers and the females, but basically you want to have your oranges out the week before orioles are normally first sighted in your area.

During this nice weather, my wife and I have notice two Lucy’s Warblers hanging out in a tree close to our back patio. We’ve been wondering why they’re there and recently they’ve started showing up with food in their mouths which made me think they must be nesting nearby. But, Lucy’s Warblers are cavity nesters and I hadn’t noticed any nesting cavities nearby. That is until I say a tiny bird dash out of this goofy coconut bird feeder my dad brought back from Uganda. Pretty cool.

I saw two species of orioles yesterday (Hooded and Scott’s) and three species of tanager (Summer, Hepatic and Western). Here’s a couple of pics of the Western Tanager. This was one of my very first species to identify when I was a young tad.

🧐 thanks to this song I have been familiarised with some American bird names at least…nice to finally meet an Oriole .
(My primary school class mates and I had to sing this song at the little school concert)

I have robins that have found a nesting spot outside my back door. I’ve tried to snap a pic but can’t get the lighting right.

A couple of oriole pics from two summers ago. This is an Hooded Oriole.

I’ve been noticing lots of Canada geese families lately.

The goslings seem to grow really quickly, just a couple of weeks from from hatchlings to full grown geese.

I don’t get why they haven’t developed a fear of cars. I often see mama goose just head into a busy road leading her flock of goslings.

The monastery’s peafowl stayed fairly close to the residential area. I was wondering if that’s why they haven’t become coyote fodder. I also wondered where they were getting their food supply. They spent some time foraging in the dried up weeds, but I counted 21 peafowl walking home from my birding foray late one evening. That’s a lot of biomass to keep up. The oblates must be feeding them. At any rate, I thought they were cool to hang out with. Amazing plumage. One in particular took it’s meals with us. It seemed to like everything except flour tortillas.

This is a Yellow-breasted Chat. North Americas largest warbler. They’re very noisy (chatty) but incredibly difficult to see. They were thick down by the St. Peter river on the monastery.(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.) (Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)
