I used to make my living as a musician. Gave it up for my family (financial stability, better hours, no longer on the road).

I studied piano for years but don’t have the gift. That is where I learned theory and sightreading.

I studied voice for years and that is my primary instrument. I am trained classically but made a living singing in coffeehouses, nightclubs, and bars (folk, rock, jazz, pop, standards, showtunes).

I also play most stringed folk instruments – guitar, banjo, hammer dulcimer, mountain dulcimer, autoharp, folk harp, etc.

I played electric bass in a band for a few years.

very cool… I only play by ear, can’t read music.
Congratulations! Playing by ear can be very helpful step in the learning process. Now go and get you some begining music books, flash cards and lessons. I started off playing piano by ear, then I could read notes, but had to listen to the piece before I could figure out the rhythm and now it is a piece of cake. I play piano, gutair, flute, saxaphone and I sing too! (no I can’t do them all at once.)Kudos to you for keeping the arts alive. God gave us the gift of music for a reason. The top reason being to priase Him!

God Bless!!

Our family loves music. We are always singing.

I play the trumpet, piano, harmonica, and I am trying to learn the guitar.

My son plays the trumpet and piano and my daughter just started the piano, she does play a mean tonette.

Music is a wonderful gift and has a unique ability to make you smile.

Flute and alto sax.
I too, after years and years of lessons cannot read notes but can only play be ear. Reading music is such a foreign language to me.

I never cared for music much, so I never picked up an instrument.

I have many friends that play instruments beautifully by ear. I am in awe of those that can do it and hear every harmony individually and hear it all together in thier head at once. Being able to play by ear is a fantastic talent! Don’t sell youself short. You have a God given talent whether you can read notes or not. 😉

Guitar, Keyboards, Piano Accordian,Harmonica,------but not all at the same time.
My family is quite musical, even the sewing machine is a Singer ! 😉

Guitar is my main instrument - a little classical (used to play “more”), acoustic & electric… Fingerstyle is my forte…

I have a mandolin that I love to play but I don’t call myself a mandolinist by any means…

I also love the piano and play a little… Mainly my own compositions… Wish I had time to play more…

I have a few other random instruments scattered around that I dabble with from time to time…

Looks like there’s alot of talent in this thread…

I don’t mean to sound arrogant. I play in a professional orchestra. I play of course the violin. A little piano. I praise the Lord with my fiddle which I named “St. Michael.” The devil hates it when I play Ave Maria on it. I should note that Veracini named his violins Sts. Peter and Paul.
I used to attend the symphony from time to time… I wonder if I’ve ever seen you???

…the Devil hates it when I play Ave Maria on my violin too (although for quite a different reason, I’m sure)…

I was a music education major in college, and trumpet was my concentration. I can play piano, as well.

electric guitar. but i play easy stuff like blink and nirvana. has anybody heard box car racer?

I am a professional church pianist/organist. I play for 2 Catholic parishes, 1 convent, 1 Presbyterian church, and 1 nursing home. (The nursing home is my volunteer job.) You’re wondering how I do all this? Well, so am I! Being so busy, I tell people I’m tapdancing my way through life. 😃 I play every Sunday at 8 AM for Mass, 10:30 AM at the Presbyterian church, Monday and Wednesday mornings for the nuns, 2 to 3 times a month on Saturday for another Catholic church for mass. After I play for the sisters on Wednesday, I run over to the nursing home 2 or 3 times a month to play either for Mass or a Communion service, depending on a priest’s availability. This, in between teaching 18 piano students and running a pro-life crisis pregnancy center! (My four kids are all grown and require little upkeep by their old ma.) There truly is no rest for the wicked (weary?)!

Sorry, just “Box Car Willie”…

*Just when I was beginning to think that I was still “hip”…

But wait!!! I do have a Herbie Hancock CD on which he covers “All Apologies”…

:hmmm:

I can play a little bit of the clarinet as well as the organ!

God Bless–JMJ
Laura 🙂

I have a BA and an MM in voice (classical/opera). Anybody in the Seattle area looking for voice lessons, I have room in my studio! (Is it against the rules for me to say that here?) I also play piano well enough to accompany at Mass, but there are so many who are better than I am that I usually don’t get the chance. In high school and college I played French horn and a little bit of trumpet. As a music teacher, I’ve also learned to play the recorder (easy to play/hard to play WELL!), flute, clarinet, and trombone, and even a little snare drum.

I play violin. I have a degree in music education. I play for mass occasionally, usually at special times like Christmas and Easter. I can also play viola. I took up the trumpet a few yeara ago when my two fo my daughters were learning, but they surpassed me very quickly.

“Praise him with the blast of the trumpet.
Praise him with strings and harp.” – Psalm 150

Hmm… I like to play my hammer dulcimer, my acoustic guitar (a lovely Ovangkol/Spruce Taylor), harmonica and jew’s harp. I’m also trying to teach myself mandolin and ukulele. Learning lots of folk and protest tunes, of course!
