Is anyone else looking forward to the new Alien game coming out? This is the first time in a while that I’ve been actually excited for a game. It looks so cool!!! alienisolation.com/media/videos

The old Alien movies were some of my favorite sci/fi movies. So I’m keeping my hopes up that they don’t ruin it. So far though, it’s looking like they really captured the feel of the original movie.

Plus…you can play on the Nostromo!!! :bounce: How freaking cool is that?!?

It does look cool. But personally I don’t like first-person shooter horror games though.

I can understand that. Usually horror games end up grossing me out, so I tend to not play them either.

However, I’m about about 8 hours into this one, and I’m not even sure I would classify it as horror at all. At least, it’s not the typical gory mess that those games are. It’s more about stealth and using your environment to get around enemies. Which I am really enjoying.

You can try and shoot, but it’ll just attract the alien and get you killed. You can’t fight that thing. So you really end up trying to avoid conflict altogether.

It still is pretty intense though. There’s been a few moments where the thing comes into the room and I have to jump into a cabinet and hold my breath so it doesn’t hear me. (Yep. It’s that smart.) Definitely gets the heart pumping. 😃

I know it’s not for everybody. But if you’re like me and you like games that make you have to use your brain instead of just shooting mindlessly, you might actually enjoy it. 🙂

There’s a new Civilization coming out! It’s called Civilization: Beyond Earth. For those of you who are familiar with an old but classic game, Sid Meier’s Alpha Centauri, the developers of this game would call it a “spiritual successor” to it.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with Sid Meier’s Alpha Centauri, well the premise of the game is that in the future the world became so destabilized and ecologically-damaged that a project was formed to colonize the nearest inhabitable planet in the nearest star, Alpha Centauria. One of the goals in Civilization was to build a spaceship which to take a crew of humans into the nearest inhabitable planet, and somehow Alpha Centauri is a continuation of that.

Civilization: Beyond Earth is somewhat also like that, except the premise is that it could be any planet. civilization.com/en/games/civilization-beyond-earth/

There’s also this cool trailer and this cool opening cinematic.👍

Yes… I’m so glad that all my outstanding homework assignments are due before the 24th. I’ll have no academic obligations to get in my way.

I already have my first game (almost) planned, or at least faction choices. Down to the Firefly reference my RD suggested I make with leader names. If I play as Franco-Iberia, I’ll rename Élodie River Tam. Whereas if I play as ARC, I’ll rename it the Blue Sun Corporation.

If I were to play Civilization Beyond Earth I would pick Franco-Iberia too; because I’m more likely to pick factions and/or leaders who are culture-oriented.

She’ also an interesting character. Here’s a vignette of her talking about a “Canon of Culture”:
civilization.com/en/news/civilization-beyond-earth-franco-iberias-elodie-shares-her-thoughts-on-culture/

Although this portion worries me, even though the entire thing’s fictional:
I do not subscribe to the notion that all ideas are worthy of preservation. Some are reprehensible, and through diligent study you may detect the shadow of these ideas before they reform within the zeitgeist, and choose a different path for yourself before they infect minds again. Some are banal, and have been culled because the ideas within them, although perhaps worthy, were expressed with considerable crudity. Some are preserved as historical curiosities, fashionable nonsense which you may examine and mock for their shortcomings. I have labelled these latter ones as such, lest there be confusion on the point. You will no doubt replicate much of old Earth’s folly in your own time; I will not enshrine this folly lest it be mistaken for wisdom.
From what I have gathered Franco-Iberia is composed of France, Spain, Portugal, northern Italy and those small European countries most people don’t recognize (like Andorra). The “leading” countries of this faction are France and Spain - currently secular societies. If trends continue into the time where the game is set in, I worry she might leave out medieval philosophers such as St. Thomas Aquinas; even though she herself - as stated in her character profile - is a “descendant of the great noble houses of Europe”. Oh well, what do you expect from a secular liberal? They ignore people who disagree with them.

Me too! I’m having my semestral break now and I’m finally playing Bioshock: Infinite. I’m actually doing well even though I usually suck at first-person shooters. Or shooter games in general. And this is just in easy mode.

So who all has played Ocarina of Time? I’m interested in how people get the eye drops to Biggoron to get the Biggoron Sword. Because apparently most people take the full 4 minutes to get there, while I’ve finished with a minute left.

I loved Ocarina of Time, but I don’t think I’ve played it in 15 years. So I honestly don’t recall. :o

I did find all of the golden skulltulas. 😛

Actually, I beat my own record. I reached Biggoron with 1:45 left.

👍 You’re making me want to play it again. I’d have to dig out my N64 and figure out how to connect it to my TV, though. 😛 That is a great game, though. Even though it has been many years since I played it, I can still picture the world map in my head.

Fallout 3, the introduction to FPS-type games for this new gamer :D. And I cannot recommend Fallout 1 and 2 enough–They’re not first-person shooters, but they’re great games! Also, Metro 2033, Stalker (an obsession with the post-apocalypse, if you couldn’t tell!) and I’ve heard nothing but good things about the Half-Life series and Bioshock. A friend is crazy about Batman: Arkham City/Asylum and Call of Duty, so I’m recommending those, too, hehe.

On the other hand, you have the Slavic Federation sending a bishop(?) to bless their ships. I know the guy in the intro was EO because of the style of cross. I don’t know enough about EO regalia to know what precisely he was.

Yes that’s an Orthodox bishop.

Well religiosity in Russia ever since the fall of the Soviet Union has had a comeback. There are a large number of people who call themselves “spiritual but not religious”, however spirituality and religiosity has risen post-Cold War. Same goes for the rest of Eastern Europe. As with Franco-Iberia, if trends continue the Slavic Federation would still have that religiosity. In fact the leader Vadim Kozlov says something about not wallowing in vice as part of uniting with others: civilization.com/en/news/the-slavic-federations-kozlov-speaks-to-the-masses/

Or maybe that’s just diplomatic rhetoric. Personally I would imagine the Pope blessing the Franco-Iberian ship, but most of the crew would have viewed such a thing as “cultural”.

Either way, I went with ARC because I love me some good espionage.

So, I finally got a PS3 because a Super Slim 250gb one showed up at local shop with some superficial damage. It was enough for them to knock the price down to $105, so I sprung on it. Right now, I’m enjoying Tales of Graces F and chomping at the bit to start Xillia, but first I want to either finish or grow tired of Graces.

Nice, when I got my PS3 it was about $230 I think, so it sounds like you got a really good deal. Hopefully it doesn’t have any problems being so inexpensive. I remember playing Graces when it came out about 3 years ago now. It took me a while to get used to the battle system but apparently you can become ridiculously good at it. Pascal is definitely one of my favorite characters from the series. I wasn’t all that impressed with Xillia unfortunately. It was a fun game but the storyline was not all that engaging to me (and it was basically a rehash of one of the plotlines of one of the earlier games, but I won’t spoil it). Xillia 2 was much, much better IMO. I still haven’t finished all the post-game content from Xillia 2 yet. Oh, and remember the Giganto monsters from Vesperia? Well they brought them back in Xillia 2! It even has the same battle theme from Vesperia. That was an excellent decision on the developers’ part.

The Kingdom Hearts Remixes are also good PS3 choices. I was playing Kingdom Hearts 2.5 this past winter and all the bonus, post-game bosses are a lot of fun to face, even though some of them are ridiculously hard (Terra’s Lingering Will, I am looking at you). I used my tax refund to get a refurbished Wii U so I have been enjoying Hyrule Warriors for the past couple of weeks.
