Why do Catholics insist on a final judgment over sin?

Galatians 4: 8 At a time when you did not know God, you became slaves to things that by nature are not gods; 9but now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and destitute elemental powers? Do you want to be slaves to them all over again? 10You are observing days, months, seasons, and years.11I am afraid on your account that perhaps I have labored for you in vain.
1 John 1: 5 This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. 6 If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth.7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.

8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.

The Rom. 5:9 passage doesn’t cover the concept of belief in the way you bring it up. But so what?
I’m not talking about belief. You denied that our salvation is based off of Christ’s sacrifice.

John 5:24 is clear that the judgment over sin “has passed.” There is no judgment over the penalty of one’s sins. It became a finished work when Jesus said so on the cross. He took our eternal penalty for us. He said,

“As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.”
Why can’t people understand that God’s plan has always been to make us righteous, who we were created to be, since Eden?? He didn’t create us to be sinners after all. Belief has a purpose, which is to unite us with Him, ‘apart from whom we can do nothing’ (John 15:5). That union is both the essence and source of man’s justice or righteousness. We have none without God. Adam thought otherwise and we’re here to learn how wrong and foolish he was.

So yesfaith! But faith that must be acted on, a union that we must remain in, a walk that we must continue to walk, to strive and persevere in, doing what God wills, working out our salvation with Him. Sheez. Read the rest of the bible.

Thom18:
And what we as Catholic do is just that. We re-present the one sacrifice of Christ at every Mass because, as a sinful people, we need the sin offering of the New Covenant at all times.
Thom18 haven’t you read!.. John the Baptist said, “behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.” He was the final sacrifice for every generation. His sacrifice reached in two directions to redeem. It reached into the past for people like Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob who expressed faith. It also reached into the future, so that Paul, Peter, John and us, can express faith in what he did. His statement in John 5:24 is true. “… he who hears My word and believes in Him … has everlasting life and shall not come into JUDGMENT, but has PASSED from death to life.” hence the word pass! as in Passover!
Yes, I have- and I don’t see what your objection is, since I haven’t ignored or denied John’s words. What you seem to be ignoring, however, is the nature of a sin (and Passover) offering in that they must never cease. The Lord was fairly clear that sacrifice must be unceasing- and so we Catholics, as the Church which Jesus founded, offer Christ’s sacrifice (which happened roughly 2000 years ago) daily. He isn’t sacrificed again, His One Sacrifice is made present to us.

He did make us righteous in seed form. Christ in us as the hope of Glory, is our seed. But we still live in a sinful frame. Until we have glorified bodies, we will always have sin. John said it this way, “If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.” 1st John 1:8

I am a bit ill at the moment, so maybe this post only exists as a fever dream, but, huh? Not understanding what you’re getting at. I’m not sure if you understand what the Catholic beliefs on “sin” actually are. (At least going by the title of your post)

really? please reference scripture to support this notion.

You are back (for a time). Temper your comments, adopt a trace of humilitry and you can remain here forever.
  1. Catholics have a complete bible with lots of verses.
  2. They have a Church with the authority given directly by Christ.
  3. They do not base their theology on single verses, since the entirety of the scriptures are a seamless whole.
  4. Ever read scripture in context? Remember the Protestant saying that citing a text without a context is a pretext.
  5. 1 Corinthians 3 gives a clue.

I thought it is quote clear. Why do Catholics insist that God will judge his bride over sin?.. On what scriptural bases? easy-peasy

thank you for the admonishment po18guy. I will do my best to respond to the sarcasm with humility. We too have the scriptures and refuse to lift them out of context, at least in my circle. The sum of Thy word is truth! again, thanks for the opportunity to share.

John 5:24 means a spiritual transfer from the old covenant to the new, not a free pass to sin. All Christians since the Apostles and for at least 1500 years believed this, until protestants twisted the interpretation of Scripture. Otherwise show us the witnesses to your interpretation before AD 1500.

Sorry TheLittleLady, I must have missed this one. But I will gladly respond. We know that all sin destroys life. This is why Jesus became sin for us on the cross. He paid a price for us by becoming our substitute. If a believer wants to remain carnal, he/she will give an account for choices made at the judgment seat of Christ. He/she will lose a reward/inheritance, forever. But he himself will be saved as through fire. See 1st. Cor. 3:13-15

Sweet, I am gonna go start sinning! Bigger sins, better sins, heaven is heaven.

I’m sorry you feel this way. Not sure if the sarcasm covers real hurt. choosing to sin over obedience is like choosing to walk through a pit of snakes, rather than a cleared path. In the long run, you won’t be happy. But sin for a season is fun.

Heaven has never been a reward for good behavior. It is described as a GIFT, it is the end result of one who possess eternal life. The reason why my bible has the saying, “Good New!” on it, is because Eternal salvation is offered that way. Take it up with Jesus. He loves you even at your worst.

If you want to take advantage of Him by living for self, you go ahead and do that. He will have tears over your life on judgment day, when He wanted to reward you with a great inheritance, but you chose to be a janitor in heaven… forever!

We have a saying where I come from: Saved by grace, judged by works.

Sounds like Mormonism.

ETA oh, and what Scripture talks about janitors in heaven? When everything is perfect, why is there trash and garbage?
