Laws that criminalise victims are a terrible idea. And women driven to abortion are, more often than not, victims. Victims of a society that has created a world where pregnancy outside of a traditional ‘normal’ setting is unappreciated and unwelcome.
Prosecuting women won’t stop them from turning to abortion, but it will mean that if they are dying of sepsis after a back alley abortion they won’t go to hospital for treatment. It will also result in women who have miscarriages standing trial if it is suspected that they ‘fell down the stairs on purpose’.
Prosecute doctors, sure. They aren’t the ones feeling terrified and trapped. Prosecuting the women is a merciless cruel rabbit hole I don’t want to travel down.
