I would like to hear the “official” non-Catholic, Protestant and/or “former Catholic” response to this, if there is one, my guess is that there are many different Protestant “twists” on this subject.

Is anyone here afraid of being guilty of the sin of apostasy or heresy?

Why do so many Protestants have a “problem” with Mary?

Why do so many Protestants have a “problem” with Mary?

I would like to point out that you are probably not going to find a protestant who has a problem with Mary. What some have a problem with is the position that some give her and devout to her.

But that is a VERY old argument, which goes round and round in circles, and one I don’t want to get into. I just wanted to point out that you will be hard pressed to find a protestant who has issues with Mary.

Thank you for your post, good question.

I asked this because, when it comes to Catholic doctrine regarding Mary, there are many non-Catholics and “former Catholics” (Apostates), who hold heretical beliefs and that is the real reason why some have a problem with the Rosary, because they have a problem with Mary and with Catholicism.

You are using the wrong terminology here. Apostate is someone that rejects God or Christianity altogether I believe.

Now this part may be true, but Byzantine Catholics do not typically recite the Rosary. The use a chikoti to recit the "Jesus Prayer"
because they have a problem with Mary and with Catholicism.

You are asking for a hard time…you have been very uncharitable with the way you present this material…why are you picking a bone or a fight with folks? One of my old Command Sergeant Majors used to tell us “there ain’t no right way to do wrong”.

Not sure if this has been mentioned yet, but I am a Catholic and I do not pray the Rosary. I think it is a beautiful devotion, but I have never really been drawn to it. I’ve prayed it before on occasion, but now since I am growing closer and closer to Eastern Christianity in general and Maronite spirituality in particular I am more fond of the Prayer Rope.

Please don’t get me wrong, I love our Holy Mother. I just don’t prefer the Rosary as my devotion of choice.

That is a question and not a definition, right?.

I am glad that you brought this up though.

How many Christian (Catholic) truths, or which Christian (Catholic) truth/truths, can a Catholic reject before they would be considered an “Apostate” or a ”Heretic”?.

What does “**rejects God or Christianity altogether" **mean?

Finally, at what point would a Catholic be “cut-off”?

This is what I meant. And I was right. The term Apostate is reserved for those that reputiate the entire Christian faith…like those that become Muslin or else.

And like I said before, when I talked to a Byzantine priest he told me that they do not recite the rosary. They say the Jesus prayer using the chikoti, which looks sort of like a knotted rosary if you will. That should be of interest to our Protestant brothers and sisters. Maybe that could help them on their journey home.

Better yet. Why don’t Catholic’s and Non-Catholics recite the Liturgy of the Hours?

Bishop Reinhold Stecher (now retired) put it well: The Rosary takes you upwards, but it’s a mountain bike, not a ski lift.

I don’t know about all non-Catholics except for the Baptist that I know, they don’t mediate on the mysteries of the Holy Rosary, but some other non-Catholics that I know do pray it. I am a cradle Catholic and pray and mediate on the mysteries of the Holy Rosary daily. If you will notice, the middle of the Hail Mary prayer is about Jesus.

Hail Mary, full of grace the **Lord **is with thee, Blessed art thou amongst women and Blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus, Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death, amen (we’re asking her to pray for us sinners), just as we ask her intercession in the Mass.

As I am sure that this has already been pointed out, the fact remains that in order for the Holy Rosary to not be a prayer that is just repeated over and over for no reason, the mysteries of the Life, Death and Resurrection of our Lord are to be mediated upon, and as has been explained to me, this is done with and through the eyes of His Mother.

All prayer leads to Jesus, and most especially the Rosary. All the prayers of the Mass are prayed to God, through Jesus and in the Holy Spirit. In the Liturgy of the Mass…and we ask Blessed Mary, ever Virgin and you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the Lord our God. Her intercession is very powerful before God, as she takes all our prayers directly to her Son, Christ Jesus. As the spouse of the Holy Spirit, she is totally united to HIM. Just as at His first public miracle she says, “Do whatever He tells you.”

It has never been about her, and I am sure that she would be the first to tell you that, it’s all about HIM. The Holy Rosary is like a daily Bible mediation when done correctly.

In the beginning of the Rosary the Dominicans prayed only the first part. Bedes come from the east as a way of tracking your prayer with as little distraction as possible. This is contemplative prayer. It more correctly goes with reading scripture too. But over time one becomes more familiar with scripture through it and since most people couldn’t read back then they used pictures [mental and actual] to remember and meditate on the mysteries of Christ’s life. There were many different meditations over the years. Eventually they were narrowed down to the 15 and now the 20 mysteries.

The second part of the Hail Mary prayer was gradually added, but reflects theological understanding about Christ and of course Mary as the Arc of the Covenant that said yes, thus bringing the savior in the world as God’s handmade. If I’m not mistaken I believe in the beginning the Rosary started with just “Hail Mary” without the rest of the words for seeking her intercession. That is we ask Saints and Angels for their prayers. The rest of it was tacked on over time.

Getting beyond intercessory prayer from Saints and Angels is really the basic problem for many non-Catholic Christians. It wasn’t that long ago for me to “get over it”. Fear not, we are NOT worshiping her or anybody else but the Holy Trinity of God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit – 3 persons in one God. This was developed by creating the word Trinity and “persons” to define what we mean universally speaking. Just like Purgatory is a created word to help understand the theology. Many folks do not realize this. For example, people think of “Original Sin” is something we believe others possess as sin. It’s really a wounded state as I’ve heard described. The word “sin” throws off folks that also have problems with the word “prayer”. Prayer is NOT worship but really means to ask.

Just remember that if you read Genesis through Revelations you will see where Mary as the mother of Jesus [thus mother of God because Jesus is God (keep theology in mind…it’s a difficult stretch if you lack the vocabulary like in high school algebra or mathematics in general)] is prophesied and revealed as special.

My spell check is in school right now [the woman who along with her family proselytized me many years ago - she’s Catholic now] to become a teacher. The last time I could spell was in elementary school and then I discovered stupid stuff like science and calculus. So my emphasis is in on technical stuff. Hey, but I’m trying.

The only reason I pointed that out was that it looked like you were saying mediator which didn’t make sense. And just incase you meant what you said I wanted to be sure. I’m a returning Catholic after years of being …no “thinking and acting” …like a fundamentalist. I was raised in a mixed home. I’ve learned so much since I’ve been back home to the Catholic Church and I just love sharing what I think I learned. I’m also open to correction. I won’t allow pride to get in my way anymore. It’ ruined me for 17 years. So if anyone is thinking about bailing, you should read the ECF first and pick some of the more recent really good books written by some of the major converts… I turned white when I learned the truth that was kept from me growing up. And I went to the seminary. I guess the clergy didn’t realize we were being proselytized enough to warrant the need for learning apologetics.

I’m sure I’ll make many more spelling erros :banghead: though and you are more than welcome to correct me . I need the help since I want to return to school to study not only my career area but also theology.

Wow! What a beautiful Rosary, did you make that? It looks way better than the ones I make. I’ve slowed down a little, in recent years but will still make one… if someone in my family would like me to make them one. I don’t miss the sore thumbs though…
