The virtue of temperance disposes us to avoid every kind of excess: the abuse of food, alcohol, tobacco, or medicine.

CCC 2290

I’d say that’s an official Church document.

.
We do not know if this woman has abused food.

I gain weight if I eat 1000 calories a day. Not everyone has the same kind of body.

There is no teaching that says it is a sin to be overweight. Many people are overweight and are not abusing food.

👍

My metabolism is messed up. I eat very little throughout the days. Yet I am considered heavy. Most days I have coffee with about 1 tablespoon of creamer for breakfast in the morning. I sip water throughout the day. Lunch does not happen until 3:30 or 4 pm and is usually a bowl of soup. Dinner is eaten around 6 or 7, and often I am still full from my late lunch, so I do not eat a lot - 1 slice pizza or a salad or 1/2 a sandwich, usually with an arnie palmer. More water after dinner. If I eat more, I gain. If I eat a little, I maintain. I really can’t cut much out, since I do not eat much to begin with. Some people are like me. I usually walk about an hour a day.

You make a very valid statement…

Is the OP’s wife capable of losing weight and get to a healthy level, if she is not already at a healthy weight for her height…

I just raise a red flag of “let’s think about this for a second” only in the terms of our culture. Many in our culture give themselves an “out” for the sin of gluttony and obesity because …well whatever the reason…

So many times we do give an “ok” to the sin of gluttoney (and it has many forms—not just food). We all—and I include myself—need to take serious stock in our behaviors to see if we are guilty of this particular sin…----

We tend to excuse ourselves very easily in this area…

Very valid observation—Is she 5’1" at 240#s or is she 5’10" or more at 240#s…

Is is possible she has let her self go?..Yep…
Is it possible her husband is being self-ish and thinking she should look like the cover of Cosmo?..Yep…that is also a valid question…
That’s just it. He can say, “You were so much happier when you were lighter” and she might hear him say “why don’t you look like a model?” He wants her to be happy, she thinks he wants her to feel ashamed of herself.

She can say “I’m tired” and he can hear “I don’t want to have sex with you.” She wants to apologize (or make an excuse for herself), but he hears it as a rejection of him. The sad thing is, women are just as likely to avoid sex because their own bodies turn them off as they are because their husbands don’t interest them. Or maybe by “I’m tired”, she meant “I want you to help me with the kids”, but he only heard “I don’t want you.”

He can say “think of all the fun things we used to do when you had more energy”, and she can hear “I want you skinny so you’ll give me sex”. He wants them to enjoy each other’s company, but she may think he just wants to come home and enjoy himself.

He may never have said a word in 20 years meant to hurt her, and she may still feel shamed by the things he has said. He may think she is not trying, and she may feel she is not able. Maybe she’s not trying, but if she is literally dis-couraged, how will she find the courage to try again after so much failure?

Again, I don’t think the OP wants to hurt his wife. I just don’t think that making this about her weight and only about her weight is likely to be the answer. Her weight is probably the least of their worries. With children still at home and then grandchildren on the way not too many years down the road, there is a lot more at stake than their own happiness, too.

I think it would be good if he could talk to her about not feeling wanted, and tell her that it has just occurred to him that maybe she feels that he is the one who has stopped wanting her, when nothing could be farther from the truth. Maybe if they both realize that they are wanted, that could make all the difference.

We also have a tendency as a society to get into worship of the body in some sort of “perfection”.

What if the wife were maimed in an accident, disfigured by disease, would he still find her repugnant?

Women are interesting creatures, we want to be beautiful for our husbands when they mirror Christ to us.

Catholic90,
By this description you certainly arent committing the sin of gluttony…

But many do…we, in our western culture of severe denial (look how we embrace the culture of death without second thought).

The sin of gluttony is rampant and pervasive in our culture…no denying that.

As an FYI, overeating is not gluttony. The abuse of food is a sin. Eating an extra helping of mashed taters does not a glutton make.

“2290 The virtue of temperance disposes us to avoid every kind of excess: the abuse of food, alcohol, tobacco, or medicine. Those incur grave guilt who, by drunkenness or a love of speed, endanger their own and others’ safety on the road, at sea, or in the air.”

Excellent point.

Is OP’s wife abusing food? We dont know. Maybe not. Maybe so.

But as Catholics and those who are trying to be authentic and credible disciples of Our Lord, looking at the sin of gluttony is something we all have to consider.

As humans, we can fall into this excess… 🙂

"One part of the “healing separation” agreement (from here):
  1. Relationships and Involvements Outside of the Relationship (Ideally a joint decision and compromise should be made concerning social involvement, romantic, and sexual relationships outside of this relationship.)"
I think the OP has checked out of this marriage long ago especially if he feels that this “Healing Separation” agreement is a viable solution to his marriage woes.

OP, I have to ask you—did you present this “healing separation agreement” to your wife?

I hope you didn’t because if she wasn’t in a terrible depression already this surely would have put her in one.

This agreement seems to give you carte blanche to have outside relations and relationships in the guise of healing your marriage. Or am I all wet here???

By the way, what ever happened to the OP??

I’m sure the OP is probably mulling all of the responses over before an additional reply.

Honestly, I’m not surprised the OP hasn’t posted lately. Many of the replies have been downright uncharitable toward him.

It continues to surprise me how so many of you assume he has been unsupportive. He never said anything to evidence that. Further, why do posters continue to ignore his statement that his wife has been really falling short in the self-discipline department. People keep posting alternative excuses. Why ignore the only evidence we have to go on?

Don’t people still care about the truth anymore? I have no horse in this race… I’m not hoping for the wife to be slothful instead of a sufferer of a genetic predisposition. But I’ll tell you what I won’t do… I won’t assume the OP is lying when he plainly states something he seems to be genuinely concerned about.

If the OP actually starts acting like the pig people have been intimating he is, I’ll be right on board with calling him out. But until then, show some charity and give the guy the benefit of the doubt that he’s been supporting his wife.

You actually probably need to eat MORE to straighten out your metabolism and appetite. Believe it or not, some people need to eat more food in order to lose weight. Sounds crazy, doesn’t it? But it works. Your body needs to re-fuel in the morning, it is not a sign of health to skip breakfast.

Agreed 100%.

I’ve read many posts on here on CAF and never before have I wanted to hear “the other person’s” side more than I do now. Oh how I wish the OP’s wife would post her perspective of things on here!

All we’ve heard is from a guy who thinks his wife is fat and lazy (and unrepentant, too). I would love love love to hear what she has to say about all this!!

I’m going to jump in here. When my husband and I got married 16 years ago I weighed 117pounds. I’m 5’5". I was very thin. Several years ago I started to put on a lot of weight. I was depressed and instead of talking about my feelings or getting help I took comfort in food. My husband eats very healthy, loves to work out and looks wonderful. He never said an unkind word to me. Always told me how beautiful I am, that I get more beautiful everyday. He knew I wasn’t happy with the way I looked. He knew that I was upset with how I had let myself go. One year for Christmas, when I was at my heaviest, just under 200 pounds, he handed me a package, wrapped with pretty paper and a bow. Before I opened it he said that he hoped his gift wouldn’t hurt me or make me angry, but he wanted to give me the gift of health because he loved me and wanted to make sure I was with him for a very long time. It was a book about healthy eating and exercise. I’d like to say it didn’t hurt to get that book but the pain wasn’t from him, it was from me. The reason I was able to take the gift he gave me and use it was because it was done with a loving attitude. He was worried about me! It wasn’t about him! Try being kind to your wife about her weight. Try to understand why she has put on the weight. Work with her. Don’t preach to her. She knows she is heavy, she doesn’t need you telling her over and over. Take over the food shopping and cooking. Make healthy meals for her or cook with her. Make it a family affair! One thing I work very hard at is not saying anything about my weight in front of my girls! They have watched me go up and down but I never talk about being “fat”! I always talk about being healthy! That’s what it is about. We are to take care of our bodies but you as the husband are called to take care of your wife! And that means loving her no matter how big she is and trying to help her take care of herself.

As a woman who has struggled with her weight for years, I am thoroughly disgusted by some of the attitudes and judgements posted in this thread towards people who suffer from obesity.

It’s not as simple as needing an “attitude adjustment”. Oh for goodness SAKES. Really?! Those of you who have never looked at a scale and faced a 50 lb.+ weight loss ahead of you JUST. DON’T. KNOW. You have NO IDEA HOW HARD IT IS. NONE. So stop with the judging as if it’s a walk in the park that an “attitude adjustment” can fix.

There is so much more I want to say but I’m sitting on my hands because I have to work Saturday morning and can’t make it to the Confessional.

OH, and btw, this weight loss ticker in my sig? See that? Oh what an accomplishment that was! Hasn’t been updated in over a YEAR because I just put on 20 lbs. this year due to taking an anti-depressant.

You will NEVER know unless you’ve been there. Ever.

Please dont be so quick with that thought.

I have been paralyzed for almost 40 years. Truly and legitmately paralyzed. Chair mobile and the whole deal.

YOU have no idea of how hard it is to lose over 80#s while sitting in a wheelchair. NONE.

Losing weight IS hard—but it is not impossible.

If I* can do it, paralyzed from a wheelchair for almost 40 years…most other people can too…

Doesnt mean it’s easy—it’s not—BUT IT IS POSSIBLE for most people…Those who are quads may really REALLY find it hard----but those who arent, it IS possible.

:hug1: It is very hard! For people like me that take comfort in food it can be a constant battle! It’s one of the many crosses that I carry and I thank God for the support he gave me with my husband and his family! It’s funny. His whole family loves to exercise and work out. The women are all very small, in height and weight. They have been nothing but kind to me about my struggles with weight. Cheering me on when the weight comes off…hugging me if it slips back on. I’m now at the lowest weight I have been in years…don’t know what it is as I got rid of the scale! I am more than a number! I know I’m looking better, my clothes are fitting better and I’ve gotten rid of a number of things because they are too big now, I have much more energy! I couldn’t do it without the kindness and love! What helps is knowing that their love for me didn’t change when I was bigger!

So far the OP has not come back in. There are many questions to be answered here.
We have been married for 20+ years, and our family is faithfully and actively Catholic. We have five children, with a two in college and youngest in sixth grade.
Tell us more about your family situation. Did you wife have all these children? Adoption? Pg has more bearing on weight increase. Where her PG’s easy? Hard? Any bedrest? She’s a SAHM? Your work schedule, and amout of help you give at home? Any nanny, maid assistance?
When we were married, my wife was 120 lbs., but she has not managed her eating and exercise, and her weight has steadily increased over the years. Currently, she is obese at nearly twice the weight on our wedding day. All the weight has caused her health to suffer, I believe, as she has had pneumonia once, and is frequently catching colds and the flu more than anyone in the family.
How tall is she? Big boned? Small boned? Gains in stomach? Hips? Steady increase? 10 lbs a year of marriage?
As she added weight, snoring became regular, and I could not get a good night’s rest in the same bed. We have not slept in the same bed for five years, which has significantly curtailed our love life.
Sounds like weight induced apnea. This becomes a vicious cycle. GUARANTEED she is not getting adequate oxygen. Meaning she is exhausted regardless the # of hours in bed sleeping. A quick google and anyone can find that regardless of weightloss efforts, the lack of sleep will hinder weightloss. Although I personally believe a good nights sleep is important, I would question the quality of her sleep, in the early years of marriage and child rearing. Can you tell us how this was handled. With 5 children in a guestimated 10 year age range, you easily had lots of sleepless nights with crying children. For me for example, DH can sleep through a crying child, right next to his head as it turns out. Who of the two of you got up for 5 years running with babies, sick and non sleeping? Was this effort shared? Any chance weight gain STARTED in these years, during a very reasonable time of expected exhaustion?
As far as we know, she has no medical issues that would prevent our impair weight loss. Diabetes runs in her family and mine, and she is all too aware of the health issues associated with the disease. So far, no signs of it in her health.
As far as you know? Does this mean a full physical has been had? Diabetes in your family if of no significance as I’m sure you’re not blood related. If she’s had a complete physical, and has NO signs, this means she’s not showing as a pre diabetic? A blood test would tell you that. Yet you mention above the snoring. So she’s done a sleep study? Apnea WOULD be a medical issue that WOULD in fact impair weight loss. Please clarify the depth of medical investigation.
She has tried dieting and exercise, but has never fully committed to managing her weight, and has never succeeded, but not for lack of support.
There’s a reason the diet industry is a multi billion $$ industry. And it’s not because all the diets and programs are good ones. There is so much terrible info out there. What kinds of programs? What do you consider support? Did she consider your support “support” by her words?
She has always been a stay-at-home mom. As the kids are older / away, she has plenty of time for many. We have an eliptical machine in our basement that she almost never uses. We bought a house on a large park, and are only a three minute walk from a fully-equipped YMCA.
Do you feel her “free” time is something she’s ALWAYS had? Or is it newish in the last couple of years. It can be that she’s not adjusting her schedule well. And well, there are still children at home. What DOES her schedule look like? I will speak to an eliptical. I HATE them. They do not allow a full extension of the knee. This is an incredibly painful machine for me. My knees feel as though they will explode within 5 minutes. I don’t think most women FEAR working out like a man as another stated. I think many women feel quite intimidated to work out near men. Especially if they are unfit. Seriously, if your own husband is grossed out with you, what will those that don’t even know you think? There is a common mentality of “I can’t go to a gym UNTIL I’m fit enough to be there.” Sad but true.
We have talked consistently about he weight and health, and have made many “new starts,” all of which have produced no improvement.
Describe these 'starts" What do they involve? I wonder if they are so over the top they are hard to keep up??? common error.
I don’t feel wanted as a husband, and have begun to feel like I represent little more than a steady paycheck to her.
This is where you lose much of the sympathy from most. Do you feel her weight loss is for YOU? Or for her? You’ve def. created between the two of you that all you are there for is money. You don’t share a bed, I assume you still work and are gone during the day. And you “consistently talk about the weight and health”. What part of that is a good relationship. Please share with us where the “good” is. Do you do fun things together? Just you and her?

In addition, I am feeling like the only adult in this marriage, as her lack of self control has spilled over into money management and a reluctance to discipline our children.
Explain in more detail her lack of control in other areas? Just how much is she eating? What is the change in $$ managment. I agree with Easter on this. A change here indicates that she’s lost interest. Why do you think? Does she eat and spend to fill a void? What void would that be? Why do your children need so much disipline if as you state above there’s not much to do with them leaving her loads of free time? Are they difficult kids? I wonder if your children have exhausted your wife? Another reason she might not be moving forward with exercise or healthful meals?
I have talked to a marriage counselor and he recommended a “Healing Separation” to ease the strain on our marriage and attempt to generate a positive change. I’m leaning toward this as it seems a reasonable step for us.
so your wife refused to go to counseling with you? How did you approach that? BAsed on what others have found on “healing separation”, sounds ALL wrong, and NOT what a faithful Catholic as you describe yourself does. Does is sound reasonable that weight loss should be for the marriage? As opposed to for the SELF? What seems reasonable about this to you?

I’d like to hear your thoughts and ideas.

Thanks.
