I see nothing wrong with jumpers, but I see plenty wrong with the way most women dress today. The younger women look often outright scandalous in clothing which invites disrespect and trouble. Older women wear unflattering pants when they could look so much nicer in a jumper or dress. And one only need look around at society today to notice that most women have no idea HOW to dress. It is quite sad I think. So for anyone to deride jumpers on women is unecessary criticism…the criticism should be saved for those who dress in revealing, tasteless, and skimpy clothing.

I think the emphasis on “style” and “trends” is also modern and worldly and the materialistic people buy into it like sheep. It is big business, big bucks for the fashion industry to keep the continually changing fashions in front of us. Women waste huge amounts of money every year buying clothes, shoes, purses, make-up, hosiery, etc. all in the name of the religion of fashion, and their never ending quest for articles of clothing to appease their vanity.

Bravo! You’d be a wonderful mother, if you aren’t already. I worry about those little girls dressed as they are!!! Why don’t their mothers worry more???

Thank you Ann. I truely believe that it is in the hands of women to change things, it will take strong Cathollic mothers with the ability to see the truth… Oh, and by the way, I am a mother, thank you my Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ!

God bless,

Are jumpers unfashionable, then? I guess that’s my point; not always. I think they can be very fashionable.
Pax Christi,
Ann
I think more then fashionable or not the jumper has definitely turned into a classic look. It’s been around for years, and I think sometimes it is more popular then other times. But it will always be around. I remember wearing a jumper back in the sixties albiet a short one. But you wore a blouse/t-shirt under it. It took me awhile to catch onto the long hippy skirt look…I was more of a mini skirt gal…

Dang! 13 pages about jumpers!! You would think it was important or something! 😉

Some really great shopping links in here though - some really gorgeous skirts! (I still won’t do jumpers though 😃 )

Um…I don’t know how a thread about jumpers got 13 pages of posts? But I am CERTAINLY glad that modesty is such a popular topic! 👍 👍

Anyways…my vote goes for modesty…in whatever form someone wishes to express that.

Modesty for a teenager/young adult who is seeking to marry one day…can be different from the modesty of a married woman. Or it might be similar…depending on the woman.

As long as the essentials are covered (chest, stomach, upper thighs, and bottom) I see nothing wrong with fashionable clothing.

Of course nothing skin tight or see through.

I am not opposed to sleeveless shirts or tank tops, so long as the essentials are covered. Neither am I opposed to shorts above the knee…so long as they are not creeping too far up there. I think an inseam of 4+ inches for shorts is good. I think mine are 5-6 in. If you are exceptionally tall or plus/womens sizes you might need more…you’ll know. However, I think skirts need to be longer, unless they are skorts or shorts worn under them. Skirts should not exceed just above the knee…as it’s hard to be “ladylike” in todays active world without giving an unwanted show. 😊

FOR CHRUCH…however…my standards are stricter. I think knee length skirts are the limit. Also sleeveless blouses, but not tank tops. Minimal neckline revealing blouses/shirts. Pants are fine. Moderate hairstyle and make up. Nothing too flashy. We want Jesus to get noticed…not us! 😉

Just my :twocents:

So what about this? Is it dowdy or cute?

I kinda thought it was cute.

Cute, cute, cute- on the right woman. All that skirt would make 5’4" me look like a doorstop.
That’s all well and good for those French and Italian women who are going to sit on a pillow and embroider all day.
Oh honey, I wish they did, but they don’t. The majority of women in Europe never sat on a pillow and embroidered all day. When you see that, you see women of means or nobility. European women work every bit as hard as we do, possibly harder! These were the ladies whose grandmothers and great-grandmothers kept families going during two world wars. They descend from tough old gals.

They can be, chosen for the right figure type. It’s when they are chosen for the wrong figure type that they look unattractive.
… I worry about those little girls dressed as they are!!! Why don’t their mothers worry more???
Because “everybody” wears it.
Because “I want it” and Mom must give in and give her what she wants, so Mom will be liked.
Because Mom is wearing it, too.

Jumpers? If someone else is comfortable in them, no problem. I’m not about to bash someone else for their clothing choices. It’s not like I’m any more fashionable in my everyday blue jeans.

That said, I would not wear a jumper. I’m 5 feet tall and large-breasted, and things that are not well fitted through the torso make me look as though I am trying to hide a pregnancy. (When I was in high school overalls were trendy, and I did not wear those for the same reason.) At 29 this is not scandalous as it would have been 10 or 15 years ago, but it’s still not the look I’m going for. And as my husband prefers to be able to see that I have a waist and hips when I’m fully dressed, I think he’d raise heck about a jumper.

Of course, I still won’t wear jeans to Mass. I prefer dressy trousers or skirts (usually knee-length or slightly longer, although I have a lovely ankle-length linen skirt) and either sweaters or blouses that are tailored well so that they don’t gap between buttons. As I don’t think open-toed shoes are immodest and I can’t stand socks or hose on my feet/legs once the temps rise above 60 F, I wear dressy sandals from May to September. I’m super excited because I finally found a white summer sweater (cotton, 3/4-length sleeves, fitted but not tight) to go with the beautiful silk navy/white knee-length A-line skirt I found at TJ Maxx a couple of years ago. I’ve got little white kitten-heel sandals to go with it so I’ll be all set for Mass tomorrow morning. 👍

Isn’t that the truth. I cringe when I see mothers dressed like their teenage daughters. It doesn’t look good on either of them, but I can’t really fault the daughter when it’s obvious that her mother is lacking in the “good sense” department.

**my OWN daughter thinks a belly shirt and low waisted jeans look ‘cute’ on her 4 year old daughter, olivia. blech
yes…the child looks ‘cute’ but she looks ‘cute’ regardless what she’s wearing.😃
daughter had a FIT when i told her she was teaching olivia to dress ‘trashy’.
well, she is. how can little girls LEARN what’s appropriate when their mothers think paris hilton is a role model?
as to jumpers…i think the main post that started the thread was just a sort of ‘conversational’ one…you know…like ‘i don’t think they look good on me, what do you think?’
it amazing how far the thread has gone and how many differing opinions there are.
isn’t it WONDERFUL to just sometimes talk about inane things and let the politics and strife of the world wait a bit?👍

Why does this thread make me want to wear jumpers all the more? I don’t know, but lol, it does. At the start of the thread, I owned one jumper. Now I have two more coming in the mail. Sigh

Well, as the OP (who also happens to be a manly man), I can assure you that jumpers do NOT look good on me! 😃

Perhaps a better question would be: Aren’t women who dress in a modest and ladylike way, in honor of Our Lady, beautiful?

Absolutely correct. Look beyond the exterior.
