SInce when are opentoed shoes immodest? We do have more babies than others and wearing closed toed shoes isn’t good when your feet swell up. Yikes! I have had Toxemia and I couldn’t get on a closed toed show for anything. Trust me the feet aren’t that pretty! To top it off the weather here in inland Southern California can get into the 100’s in the summer. If a guy has a foot fetish he might need to see a shrink!
LOL

I keep thinking I’m going to start getting a pedicure every now and then just for me time, if I do I’m going to have to go buy some new shoes to show off my toes! 😉

From what I saw in Europe the Trads don’t worry about this stuff. They are modest but don’t seem to concern themselves with wearing pants. At the Chartes pilgrimage most of the European women wore pants. It was the pritanical American trads who did. I also got to know some Trad Catholics over there and all of the ladies wore pants. Even the SSPX ladies did as well. I have been over there since and saw the same thing in the rank and file TLM.

It is crazy to say that if you wouldn’t wear it in front of the Lord you shouldn’t wear it. I wouldn’t wear any of my night gowns to Mass but I wear them to bed.

I married a Byzantine Catholic man and go to Divine Liturgy with him now. We have several families who used to go to the TLM and left for some of these reasons. they can come to our Church, love the Pope, not see Communion on the hand, and not worry if they have the 8 inches past the knee or 6. The really great thing is that they all dress modestly!
Traditional Catholic European, you say…😉 I don’t know about that:

My grandmother(May her memeory be eternal!) said that people who were overly concerned about modesty might have dirty minds. She was never dressed sleezy or looked out of place. She didn’t like short skirts or stomachs showing but she did think a skirt at knee lengh wasn’t anything to call the modesty police about. To many good women have had these women after them as well. This crowd also goes to the new mass.

If we as trads like beautiful churches why not try to have nice looking women.
Well said! :clapping:

As the OP, I just wish my thread on the monotheletist heresy last month engendered this level of responses. :hmmm:

LOL

As an Ex Calvinist I am more interested in history than ugly dresses. Could you send me the thread. Sounds interesting.

**not always.
a thread discussing the issue on another site was started by those who do NOT approve of the ‘new mass’.
infact, they call it the ‘new mess’,🙂
believe me…had they tar, feathers and a railroad near by, i wouldn’t be here now.😃

The new mass folks don’t have as many of them but they are there. The extreme trads won’t even go to Mass if they can’t find a TLM.

What I find immodest about the crowd is that they wouldn’t be caught with a sleevless shirt on but many will breastfeed with no covering on. My friend said her priest ask the ladies to please cover up with a blanket especially when going up for Holy Communion. I have seen this so many times myself.

I absolutely believe there is modesty outside the jumper. I think that I dress modestly, and I don’t own a single one. Trousers that fit properly (not too tight), skirts that are full and to the knee or longer (and there are SOOO many pretty feminine choices right now!!), blouses that don’t show cleavage or belly, and are not too tight. And I shop where everyone else shops, no special places needed. All it takes is a little imagination, trying things on to ensure they fit properly, and not falling victim to trends. Oh - and proper undergarments to ensure everything stays where it’s supposed to. :o

Modesty does not have to mean a jumper - there are so many alternatives available. Personally, I don’t particularly like the Little House look. It might be practical, but I still like to look good. Being modest does not mean that you can’t look nice, put together, and stylish.

Amen, Liza! 🙂

** as for the ORGININAL theme of this thread…the jumper…i KNOW i look frumpy in it. heavens, i’m 5-3 and weigh 225…i look frumpy in almost everything. LOL.
i like them because i can dress them up or down and be comfortable at the same time.

Hear Hear!! I’m 5-9, and weigh 240, and I know what you mean. Everything seems to look frumpy! (Actually, compared to the rest of my wardrobe, a jumper is downright dressy!)

In the heat of the summer, as I walk into my un-airconditioned church, I will see other girls wearing halter tops and shorts, but I shall wear my frumpy jumper and not feel ashamed!! 😃

I also think it’s important to consider the climates we live in. I live in Southeast Texas–extremely hot for at least 5 months of the year. Jumpers, might be fine for winter (late December through February,) but would be pretty miserable any other time of the year. I also think we have to consider our individual body types. I am small all over. If I wear a sleeveless blouse with a skirt (below the knees), there is nothing immodest about that. For Mass, however, I usually have a cardigan thrown over my shoulders–air conditioners work overtime in this part of the country during summer months.

I don’t wear anything that’s tight–too uncomfortable. Common sense is a valuable commodity. What I wear to a Fourth of July picnic is probably not appropriate for Mass, but it doesn’t necessarily follow that it’s immodest.

On the subject of fashion–I love hats! I wish American women (like the British) wore them more. A very old priest told me his mother was known as the “hat lady” at her parish. She wouldn’t have dreamed of setting foot in her church without being dressed in her best for Jesus. I try to remember that and take it as my guide. However, I don’t have a very formal wardrobe. Still, I have specific items of clothing that I save for Sundays.

So what about this? Is it dowdy or cute?

I kinda thought it was cute.

Wow, it’s cute! But on me, it would look dowdy. It wouldn’t flatter me at all.

I have a copy of Everyday Manners for American Boys and Girls from 1922 and it contained some timeless advice in the chapter about “Dress.” (Don’t laugh, there are gems in these old books.) From the book, let me share this with you:

…the style of dress that is becoming to one may make the other wearer look ridiculous…If you wish…to be inconspicuously and becomingly dressed, you should consult your mirror rather than the fashion books for many details, for dress is an individual matter.

That’s why, jumpers, on me, are ridiculous, but oh so comfortable (at least around the house)!

As an aside, I must share that there is a lady at my office who wears the Middle Eastern headscarf, or hijab. But she wears low-cut blouses which reveal clevage, and snug capris or shirts above the knee…that makes no sense at all.

**see? we NEED those old manners books. clear cut, black and white guidelines.😃
i wonder why your co-worker wears the hijab in conjunction with the other more revealing clothing. that doesn’t sound quite right.
