Excellent. We both agree there is nothing wrong with the symbol itself.
excuse me?
where did I ever say that.
I disagree . totally. And make no apologies for doing so.

good try , but no cigar, ratio

OP I think the fact that you have asked the question shows that you have some concern.I would go with
‘when in doubt…’
It’s not catholic, and obviously hints at other beliefs, not something I would wear even if it’s cool or trendy.God bless.

You really are over thinking things.

My opinion is that those who opine “yin yang” is of the devil and anti-Catholic because it is Buddhist Religion or occult tout foolish views with no appreciation of the culture from which it came, have no Magisterial sources to backup their strong views and seem to rely on Google instead of scholarship.

I see the world and ancient wisdom from a glass half full perspective. It is innocent until proven otherwise. Over to you.
i am not here to convince you or anyone. You are big enough to make your own way in the world and form your own opinions.
however, they are just that, opinion. Decades of eastern exercise is no proof. ,Your stance on luck, fortune and fate tells me you have quite a journey ahead. To realise the false gods luck, fortune and fate are totally incompatible with Catholicism.

Your failure to read and discuss what I write, and instead interject your own “write your own words instead of hers” tells me that comprehension is a skill that can do with improvement.

Again, you play the what are your sources cry, yet fail consistently to answer my original query.

You are free to view the world , both its ancient and its modern any way you wish.
God gave us free will.
God also gave us books of His ancient and eternal Wisdom, and His modern world Wisdom.
I am free to reject any Wisdom that is not Gods Wisdom.

And again, given your extensive theology studies, tell us,

what is Wisdom

And your point is?
My point is that philosophic symbols from major cultures far older than European are reasonably held innocent until proven guilty.

My atypical Euro experience of Asian culture at both popular and academic levels has given me no reason to reverse that approach to the symbol/philosophy of concern here.

You offer no lived or direct academic experience re China or its relgions.
You are clearly a more fearful glass half empty person because of that inexperience.

Nothing more to say.

well you can concede, or you can indeed enlighten the less theology educated on
Wisdom .

hearsay and the human condition go hand in hand. The human condition is to apply its native culture to everything. Hard to break away from this.

You do seem to have a few issues gelling your euro and Asian ways of being. This is what, the third time you have alluded to a discrepancy.

Yes we are now back to your original tyre kicking assumptions that you clearly feel will make your point.

it goes like this…i did x years Tai Chi, Westernised mind you, I have Asian relatives, I worked in China. I have how many degrees. therefore I am expert.

lets just dwell on the Chinese work experience. Tell me , when , if ever, is a foreigner considered as equal , rather then be treated with that ole Chinese politeness.

You said using bible for divination is wrong. I’m assuming that you believe bible itself is ok.
So by the same token, using I Ching as divination is wrong, but there is nothing wrong with I Ching or the yin yang symbol itself.
Otherwise how do you reconcile this analogous situation?

BTW what is “going too far?”
When you said it “worked”. Perhaps you need to clarify what you mean by that.
My post is clear that I don’t have a problem with the cat itself as I have one. I have a problem with believing that it has special powers to bring luck.

If i read a book on how to care for the elderly that is not against Catholic teaching, then is it ok?

What if some crazy people decides to use it for divination?

I don’t see how this situation is different to I Ching when it is a book simply to teach people how to behave in life.

oh , sorry, i separated your two comments as being abusing sacred scripture as wrong, which yes , we are both in complete agreement.

,And the wearing of a symbol of yin yang, which I believe, as you said, can cause scandal and questions and going down those rabbit holes.

but more then that. the framework the i ching and the yin yang symbol exist in,
incompatible with Catholicism.

i see you asked a question about counselling someone starting a new job.
do you mean what advice would i give, any specific scenario?

No I disagree. The framework is compatible with Catholicism.

That was just a question to demonstrate that the church doesn’t have all the answers to life’s problems and it’s ok to seek help from other sources such as secular books or the I Ching AS LONG AS IT DOES NOT CONFLICT WITH CATHOLICISM.

but its not. it began as two things , an oracle, it employed divination. As well as a book of its writer’s wisdoms.

So in its capacity and function as a divination oracle, how is this any different to tarot cards or horoscopes or fortune telling?

We’ve just agreed on that some people can use the Bible for divination purposes. How is the Bible different to tarot cards?

You’d have to ask my brother’s boss.
“It worked” suggests to me his business starting doing very well from the time we gave him the Lucky Cat brought back from China :hugs:.

He assiduously replaces the battery so that swinging arm keeps bringing in the customers.
Perhaps they keep coming back to see the Cat!

Lets not get too serious about it all.
He’s an atheist.

Sorry we do have to be serious when it comes to determining what is right or wrong. I agree we don’t have to be serious about having a lucky cat and I have said I have no problem in having one. But if you sincerely believe that the cat has helped his business then there is something seriously wrong. But if you are just saying this jovially then that is fine. But people may mistake your statement to be serious so Im always careful on this forum not to lead people astray by making ambiguous statements that can be interpreted as jovial or serious.

Personally I don’t see what the issue is providing you attribute no religious beliefs to it.

Perhaps the yin yang symbol originally had a spiritual connection, but now a days it’s been worn so often as just a “cool” piece of jewellery that I think if you wore it then most people would just see it that way, like wearing a “peace” symbol.

I don’t think by wearing it would be believing/honouring “another God” because it is like when atheist/agnostic/religiously disinterested girls in their 20’s etc wear cross earrings or cross necklaces just because they are in fashion-I really don’t like that they wear it this way without any respect or care for the meaning of the cross but I also don’t think that they could “accidentally” worship Jesus by wearing it.
An object in itself has no power/spiritualness-its what we believe and attribute to it that dos.

Yin and yang doesn’t necessarily have to mean an opposing spirituality. It can also just be taken as meaning like a complementary view of male and female.
Eg:women being mostly yin with some minor yang and men being mostly yang with some minor yin.
Even biology supports this “assertion” with women having mostly progesterone and estrogen but still with some (lesser amount) testosterone and vice versa for men.
Of course this is a vast generalisation-ie:there are some women that are not too “yin” whether naturally or due to today’s popular culture of trying to promote gender neutralness etc…

I’m sure there are other ex pagan traditions or other spirituality traditions that have been adopted by Christianity over time.

At the same time,I don’t think Christians should adopt any beliefs from some Chinese based spirituality as they can be based of superstition, and belief in “magic” in a sense.
Like have a happy cat because it’s cute and traditional, but don’t genuinely believe that it will bless your business in some way because that’s when it be becomes incompatible with Catholicism because only God can bless our business.

Oh dear.
Why is it nobody seems to have any common sense balance on this thread.
None of the many middle class Chinese I have lived with in their homes in China, Singapore or Malaysia take Lucky Cats any more seriously than Catholics who have shamrocks or horse shoes above their door, give Harry Potter books to their kids, put their teeth under the pillow for the pagan tooth fairie then go down for breakfast and have a quick read of the a paper including their horoscope for the day,

What is it about us Catholics that makes us so insecure in our faith re trivial matters.

Well thats enough for me on this thread.
I am clearly of the devil despite going to daily mass since the age of 15.
I’d better not wear my Tai Chi TShirt at mass in case the PP refuses me Communion as well.
🤣😂🤣.
