Missal??! You don’t have Breaking Bread behind the pews?
I take my 1962 along to the OF Mass. Sometimes the readings match right up. And I can whisper the Confiteor and the Creed in Latin.

You really think the article was saying what you claim about 'overly praising one"? See, I don’t think that’s the case.

my neckties are too wide for the 1950’s look.
You still wear neckties? No kidding! I still have three, I think, in the drawer with my socks, but it must be ten years since I last wore one.
@Augustinian - you wear your ties. Class never goes out of style and people do notice that sort of thing. :+1:t3:

It’s funny, but most Sundays I think I’m the only one at mass in a tie lol…

but claims of liturgical superiority get quite tedious for people who don’t have the time or ability to study Latin.
The Council of Trent condemned mass said exclusively in the vernacular. There is obviously a superiority there.
550 years ago, the world was a different place, and so was the Church.

There is no superiority to either Mass. Not one bit.

Most Sundays I’m the only woman in a skirt. I dress up for church/Mass, to this day. Longer skirts, jackets, no sleeveless shirts (as they’re not appropriate here anyway, though I’d say San Antonio would be different, LOL).

People notice, deMontfort. And at any rate, I’m sure your wife does. 🙂

Good for you, Poet. 🙏🙏🙏
I love the Mass. But I love the Mass, the prayers and all parts of the Mass in English.

Yeah, I was in a non-practicing household growing up, but I’m still culturally a part of the “Sunday Best” crowd.

I hear you. I can’t help it. What others do is their choice and I don’t condemn them for it in the least. It doesn’t make me any better than them - it’s more to do with how I was raised. (And the fact that my dad would roll in his grave, LOL!)

Often challenged, but never defeated…it’s the Immemorial Mass!

Don’t forget to wear one of these, kid!(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)

Funny you say that. I have actually considered it - because my grandmother, aunts, and older cousins did it and I have an appreciation for the tradition behind it.

That one is really pretty and is actually what I think of when I hear the word “veil” in relation to Mass.

If there is no superiority involved in the position of “There are two rites in the Church, O.F. and E.F., and I like (pick rite) better”

Then there would be no need to even discuss the topic.

Seriously, do people get all wound up about blueberries and strawberries? Which is better. . oh wait who cares?

OK, how about cats and dogs.

There are cat people and there are dog people, and there are some who like both ‘equally’ and some who don’t like either.

But do dog people routinely go around and call cat people ‘secret Egyptian cultists’ and say every cat should be drowned?

Do cat people routinely go around and say dog people smell each other’s butts and that all dogs should be sent off on the nearest ice floe to Antarctica?

Do people who like neither cats nor dogs even bother to comment about Internet chat on same with more than a ‘meh’ or a jocular, “Give me my ball python”?

Do people who like both cats and dogs get ticked off by both ‘lovers’ and told that the defense of ‘one’ makes them into haters?

People can get pretty passionate about loving their ‘furry children’ etc but it takes “Latin” or “Vatican 2” to bring out the venom and the vitriol and the honest-to-god HATRED of somebody whose ‘choice’ doesn’t match yours. . .

The Council of Trent proclaimed it infallibly.
Do you mean this passage? Serious question.

“…it shall be unlawful henceforth and forever throughout the Christian world to sing or to read Masses according to any formula other than that of this (Latin Mass) Missal published by Us…this present Constitution shall have the force of law in perpetuity…We order… that nothing be added to Our newly published Missal, nothing omitted therefrom, and nothing whatsoever altered therein. We specifically command… and We order them by virtue of holy obedienceto sing or to read the Mass according to the rite and manner and norm herein laid down by Us…and not to introduce any ceremonies or recite any prayers other than those contained in this Missal.”

We give and grant in perpetuity that this Missal may be followed absolutely…and may be freely and lawfully used…

We likewise order and declare that no one whosoever shall be forced or coerced into altering this Missal and that this present Constitution can never be revoked or modified, but shall forever remain valid and have the force of law."

It says “in anything other than the formula of” the Latin Roman Missal.

Not “you must never use the vernacular and Latin is your only option or you’re a heretic”.

Why are you repeating this to me when all I said was the Church was different 550 years ago in response to a post that stated the Latin Mass is irrevocably superior?

Relax. Good Lord. That was hardly warranted in my direction.

Wrong.

Canon 9. If anyone says that the rite of the Roman Church, according to which a part of the canon and the words of consecration are pronounced in a low tone, is to be condemned; or that the mass ought to be celebrated in the vernacular tongue only; or that water ought not to be mixed with the wine that is to be offered in the chalice because it is contrary to the institution of Christ, let him be anathema.

The wording indicates that Trent’s intent was to prevent the Latin Mass from being completely displaced; not to condemn any and all vernacular liturgy.
