Well, here’s the thing (from somebody who remembers Mass before the Great Change). . . most of what is ‘in the book’ you already know.
Seriously.
And you don’t have to read it, "At the Mass’ (just as now for the OF you don’t 'have to read the epistles etc during the Mass; you can read them in your pocket missalette at home and meditate on them). Of course some people choose to follow along even now at the OF and not just at those points because, well, some people’s hearing starts to go. If you are sitting in front and you still can’t hear well, and you want to fully participate, then you really SHOULD be reading, shouldn’t you? Again, of course, after many years, you know what is being said almost (key word almost) without having to see or hear, because you’ve seen and heard and it becomes ‘ingrained’. The same thing happens with that ‘other Mass’. Especially since there are fewer readings (we Catholics were encouraged to read our Bibles outside Mass too). And since many parishes since 2011 have gone back to the way Vatican 2 said and put in the Greek Kyrie and the Latin Credo, Sanctus, Gloria, etc., you’re going to find those fairly familiar. (although the Kyrie is said more often). There are going to be ‘secret’ prayers which again, you can read at home and meditate on when you hear them (but then again, how often do you really hear the priest saying some of the prayers before the Sanctus? Some priests bellow them out but some do not! And again, just go to the Roman canon (#1) and while it’s shorter than the usual prayers at the consecration during the EF, you’ll have all the basics right there.
And again, the more you hear, the more familiar even "Latin’ words will be.
