The bishop has made the right decision. The cathedral (said to be one of the biggest in the Southern Hemisphere) is not salvageable.

The Cathedral Church of Christ (Anglican) in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Christchurch is said to be New Zealand’s most English city, with most original settlers being Church of England missionaries, and city remaining strongly Anglican well into the 20th Century. The large Catholic cathedral was built on the outskirts of town whilst the Anglican one (and it is very beautiful) has pride of place in Cathedral Square, in the middle of the city.

It is set to be restored.

It is a shame. A real shame.

The bishop was under a lot of pressure to save it but it was going to cost tens of millions more than simply rebuilding. The Diocese probably could have done it, but at a major financial cost that may well have harmed the Diocese and it’s finances very badly. Besides, the number of people financially supporting the Church in NZ is quite low, with Catholics only numbering around 6% of the population in 2018 (Anglicans also around 6%). There was one time when the majority of NZers were either Anglican or Catholic so the decline in religious belief is profoundly sad.

Saint Germain l’Auxerrois, in Paris, France.

This church has pretty much become my virtual parish since lockdown began. It’s where the Notre-Dame chapter took refuge after the cathedral burnt one year ago, and they broadcast daily Vespers and Mass.

Sorry I just mixed two languages. Silly me. He is called Karlo Veliki in Croatian. Wanted to say Charles the Great or what you wrote Charlemagne.

The St. Camillus Center for Pastoral Care Church in Los Angeles, which especially supports the Catholic hospital chaplains of the Archdiocese. St. Camillus de Lellis is a patron saint of hospitals, nurses and the sick, and we could certainly use his intercession now!
