I will not disagree with the selfish and stubborn comment, however I can’t reduce our very real differences to that argument.
I really do not see any major differences that cannot be easily resolved ( unless I’m blind ) by both sides. There are simple ones, such as the dates for Easter and Christmas, and complex ones like the Papal office and Purgatory. The solutions are there and evident if only both sides would give a little. What would Jesus do?

Calendars, Easter, celibacy, beard lengths, and incense are not the problems…The giant elephant in the room…THE PAPACY!

The problem with taking the stance that the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Churches must be unified to “be one” is that you’re leaving out a considerable number of Christians. What about the Oriental Orthodox? What about the Old Believers? What about the Old Calanderists? What about the Protestants?

The fact is that both Catholic and Orthodox dogma is that the Church is One, and any other groups are in schism from the true Church, and if your belief is that the two must be joined for the Church to be “One”, then I must ask what you think of these other groups? While I cannot speak for Catholics, the Orthodox attitude to those who come to the Church is one a joy (I get the feeling this is true of Catholics as well, but as I said, I’m in no place to speak for them). The Orthodox Church has missionaries all over the world, trying to fullfill Christ’s last command that we preach the gospel to all the world.

So no, there is no urgency in being one again because the Church has never not been one. Perhaps Communion between the Churches would make the job of seekers easier - I know it would have helped me out - but ultimately even with communion they will still have to sort through fifty million denominations, the only difference will be that the two largest Communions will be one.
That is important, but the Protestants deny 5 of the 7 Sacraments. The Orthodox and Catholics have all 7 valid Sacraments.

I believe that is why Catholics and Orthodox becoming unified is more discussed.

I don’t think anybody believes its less importatnt for all Protestant brothers and sisters to be unified in the fullness of Truth.

For quite a while Anglicans and the Orthodox were much closer to reunion than the OC and the CC.

Yes, it is a stumbling block and it seems like it’s insurmountable. But I believe that there is a solution to the problem which can be acceptable to all ( no problem is unsolvable ). The only thing that really stands in the way of solution is the stubborness of all parties involved to give way a little more than just a little.

Do you think it would be a good idea to give ground on something that was understood correctly? I somehow can’t see that being a positive on an issue of this kind. It’s not like me letting my husband think that his shirt actually looks good tucked into his pants, which makes him happy and has no serious harmful effects. It’s an issue with consequences if understood or practiced incorrectly.

** HEY BLUEGOAT:**

You’re cheering for the wrong team…it’s the Philadelphia Phillies that you should be for, with or without beards!!

I, for one, refuse to grow a beard.
So does my priest. He was apparently receiving some criticism from parishoners for being clean shaven, so he held up some photos of beardless Orthodox priests after Vespers one evening to prove that it wasn’t uncommon! I had to laugh out loud 😃

Hee hee. Well, I haven’t got the right hormones for a beard myself. If I ever find I have one, I’ll shell out for electrolysis.

As it happens though, I don’t think any of the men on my dad’s side of the family are actually able to grow a beard - not without looking like they have the mange. I think in such situations it is better to be clean shaven.

I’m not the Giants fan - gurney is. I don’t really follow sports much, other than the occasional curling match.

When man learns to touch his elbow with his tongue:p, then we will see our Orthodox brothers come under the chair of St.Peter. Till then we must keep trying.

Yes. I would if it means unity and permanent peace. There is a sort of precedent for that when Peter was reproved by Paul.

Actually they’re real. Brian Wilson did it as a joke. He already has a mohawk. He’s a natural sandy blonde. He took ultra jet black hair dye and colored his beard just for laughs. Romo and the rest followed his lead. They’re real, just over the top! 😛
I am pretty sure those first two beards are fakes.

And just why is that? The Phillies are not the team to beat anymore. 😉 Halladay got blasted in game one by Cody after being considered unhittable. Hamels got outpitched bigtime by Cain, our bullpen generally has been better, and Werth, Ibanez, Utley, Howard, and the gang are in real slumps compared to their usual potential. They were cocky and arrogant and thought they’d blow us off the map in a sweep. You’re in Ohio anyway. Shouldn’t you be an Indians fan? Or do you just go for World Series winners? :p:cool:

You couldn’t get me to pull for an east coast team. It’s nice to see the West coming back. The Lakers stomped the Celtics, the Giants are cleaning house against Philly, Texas is whipping New York. Good times…hope it keeps up!

And you should fear the beards!:p:D

When Obama wears a confederate flag t-shirt and Rush Limbaugh shops at a vegan health food store and Elton John joins the NRA then Orthodoxy and Catholicism will be one!

The Orthodox have never been under the chair, and never will be. As for restoring communion with St. Peter, the first step is to start using terms which place no blame when talking with those who are Orthodox, as Orthodox members here do when talking with Catholics.
