The first saint born on American soil,
Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton did toil,
As a widowed convert near Baltimore, she,
Founded the Sisters of Charity,
Who taught in schools, which they began,
Our Catholic schools followed her plan,
From coast to coast, and in between,
Our saint of the day for post 218.

Well said @christofirst. Her conversion was triggered by His Real Presence in the Eucharist, and as you noted she not only converted, she acted in setting up schools.

Have a blessed day!

Another saint for the U.S.A.,
We celebrate St. John Neumann today,
From Germany, he reached our border,
Ordained in the Redemptorist Order,
As Bishop of Philadelphia, he,
Built schools and churches throughout his See,
A friend on whom the poor could lean,
Today’s saint for post 219.

(Of course, this year, his feast is eclipsed by the Feast of the Epiphany. Blessed and happy Epiphany!)

He learned six languages, and this served him well as his diocese was full of immigrants. The new land was a light for those looking for a better life, and so much more so is Jesus the light of eternal life.

Have a blessed day!

From Canada, we can’t forget,
The miracles of Saint Andre Bessette,
In Montreal, we learn the story,
Of the founder of St. Joseph’s Oratory,
This Holy Cross brother of humble dealings,
Was known for many miraculous healings,
And as his fame for the healings grew,
He said, to St. Joseph the credit was due,
Indeed, he was never one to boast,
Our saint of the day for my 220th post.

Saint Andre was an instrument of God’s healing in the world, a goal we all should have.

Have a blessed day!

A Spaniard of the saintly sort,
We honor Saint Raymond of Penafort,
The Dominican Order he oversaw,
And he helped to codify Canon Law,
Archbishop of the Tarragona See,
And confessor to Pope Gregory,
His preaching skills were highly prized,
And he brought countless souls to Christ,
We thank him now for all he’s done,
Our saint today for post 221.

I continue to be amazed at all the Saints throughout our history and the wonderful things that they have done. Saint Raymond is another great example of that. I had not heard of him before, but thanks to this wonderful poem I have now.

Have a blessed day!

Have you heard of St. Theodoret of Cyrus? He chose me for this year, 2020!

This 222nd post today,
Is for Saint Thorfinn of Norway,
As bishop, he was forced to flee,
When he and the king did not agree,
And he was blessed with sanctuary,
In a Cistercian monastery,
Now, 730 years since he died,
We still remember him with pride.

He was known to be kind, patient and generous, with a mild exterior and a firm will against evil. Let us all work to be remembered as favorably.

Have a blessed day!

From Africa to up near Surrey,
Saint Adrian of Canterbury,
Called many places home sweet home,
Including several years in Rome,
The last place that he did inhabit,
This famous Benedictine abbot,
Was at St. Augustine’s Monastery,
Our saint of the day for post 223.

He was a highly successful missionary and teacher. Sounds like someone I would like to meet one day.

Have a blessed day!

For Gregory of Nyssa, Cappadocian Father,
Serving as Bishop proved quite a bother,
While administration was not his forte,
We revere his profound theology today,
His writings give us much to ponder,
And hope for what awaits us yonder,
He’s there now with that Heavenly corps,
Our saint of the day for post 224.

He was one of the Cappadocian Fathers, who greatly contributed to our understanding of our faith. As noted, it gives us hope for what awaits us.

Have a blessed day!

From Doge of Venice to a hermit, solo,
We honor Saint Peter Orseolo,
He gave up politics one day,
To follow the Benedictine way,
And learned from good St. Romuald,
That as a hermit he was called,
A greater transition I couldn’t contrive,
Our saint of the day for post 225.

A beautiful poem about a humble man, a man devoted to prayer and charity. As a result he enjoys the beatific vision for all eternity. Let him be an example for us all.

Have a blessed day!

This year, today we celebrate the Feast of the Baptism of Our Lord. Otherwise, on Jan. 12:

Saint Aelred of Rievaulx today the Church picks,
As I do with this my post 226,
He left the court of the Scottish king,
For the grace Cistercian life would bring,
Where soon their abbot he was made,
And the light from his teachings has yet to fade,
So as this rhyme now comes to an end,
Recall Saint Aelred, our spiritual friend.

Saint Aelred was know for his tenderness and patience. He once undertook a mission to a tribe of barbarians, where his exhortations convinced the chief to become a monk. Let us all be enthusiastic in sharing the good news of our Savior.

Have a blessed day!

When I was in the monastery, I read his book “Spiritual Friendship” – what a jewel of a work!
