Considering that I believe our government failed to protect the nation on 9/11, failed to tell the truth about a war with Iraq, failed to adequately plan for the occupation, and failed to adequately care for the military and returning veterans, etc., I don’t believe that mine are the hands covered in blood.
And all this justifies you encouraging the enemy to kill more Americans.

Thekla:
If someone’s hands are soaked in blood, they belong to the deceitful members of our government and those who have willfully enabled them. Many have only to look in their own mirrors.
Didn’t the nuns teach you about rationalization when you were in school?

Where is the honor in ecouraging the enemy to kill more Americans?

There is none. It is treason. Although I don’t know of any Americans on this list advocating this. If they are, they need to take a break and rethink what they are saying.

You started off okay but somehow found yourself back into realm of ad hominem. Most of us in uniform love Secretary Rumsfeld. Sure some of the senior leadership get worked by his style but that is because he is forcing the military, traditionally an organization that at times becomes set in its ways, to think about things a bit differently. Much needed in this day and age if you ask me.

I am interested in which senior officers you know that are “skilled in getting that next star, or what their stock portfolio looks like” rather than doing their job. Please list names. I will be glad to discuss.

President’s don’t need war experience. That is why they have Generals and Admirals. Lincoln had some. Wilson had none. Roosevelt had none. Kennedy and LBJ had some (whoops bad example.) And then I will give you Bush senior did have war experience. But all in all, not necessary for the job. But if we want to make that the standard then I guess I would be open to it. Still leaves me eligible.🙂
When i was in uniform i hated bush and rumsfeld’s guts. and i knew alot of others who did too. but…maybe i was a little harsh on our other senior leadership. They really can’t teach that kind of thing at the academies or canidate. You have to agree with me that we need to blow this thing wide open and get the troops the things they need over there.

If you were in uniform you know how Clinton devistated the military. In a lot of cases, there simply isn’t the stuff to send over there. You can’t build up the force overnight, especially running it the way the US citizens demand it be run. And especially without the support of one of the major political parties.

well alot of those ravaging clinton cuts were started by bush senior. but i don’t really want to argue about that right now. the fact is is that it was done, and we need to build it back up. it is true that we can’t build up overnight, but we can make a dent. 👍

Only if the Dems let us.

Visit a few bases in your spare time. See how the other half lives.

Sorry, meant to visit them today. See the shape they are in.

oh i hear about it all the time from my sister and brother who are still in. on my old base, they were talking about shutting down family housing and renting those houses out. that was one of the many things that made me want to get out.

If you think the only people opposed to the war are rich liberals, you are sadly misinformed.
I don’t happen to think that at all - many are misinformed, not informed at all and are like sheep who follow the loudest voice or mob carrying placards and using all kinds of “positives” to entice them into divisive factions pitting one class, one group, one party against the other.

Good grief some of the polls taken of these people in the streets during the election campaign showed they didn’t even know who the Vice President was, hadn’t a clue about the Iraq & US situation and knew even less about the UN or the Euro powers – but they all had signs, they could all shriek loudly and obviously had the time to stand on street corners. I can excuse the ignorant ones, they don’t know any better and the last time they read a history book was before some high school exam the following morning but the ones who manipulate, who distort, decieve and like Goebbels, shout it over and over again – as if somehow that makes it true.

You’ve seen them even in this forum, they come under one guise when in fact they have another agenda totally. And then there are the self hating ones – they project onto the nation or its government the disgust and the disappointment they have within themselves as some outward reality.

The ‘Battle of the Bulge’ last about 30 days and the US lost about 30,000 men. That is a thousand a day just in one battle, if the country had been run by todays liberals in WW II we would have pulled up stakes and come home and left Europe to the Nazis. In today’s climate Ike would have been court marshaled and run out of the military for the way he ran ETO.
I won’t even bring up the Sicilian campaign with an extraordinary number of planes and crews taken down by friendly fire…war is what it is - and as MacArthur once put it, a true soldier hates it, he just knows he has to deal with it.

The honor of dissent - gimme a break. Save it for a Berkeley love fest.

In case no one has ever explained it to you, there is a time and a place, there is an m/o to express it. I’m sure where you work there must be some basic ground rules for expressing dissatisfaction with the ownership/management – that’s why some rise to the top in their fields, they grasp the basic attributes of judgment, prudence and commonsense.

Hate? Interesting choice of words. As much as I disagreed President Clinton’s approach of “shoot and run” I never hated him. As much as I disliked Secretary Aspin’s REDUX plan I never hated him. I’m not quite sure if Secretary Cohen did anything though. 🙂

Army’s and Navy’s will NEVER have all of the things they need for either cost reasons or because war is so dynamic with tactics changing all the time. What will remain constant is that whatever gear troops are given, they will modify them and no matter how good a situation is troops will complain. (Or as we say in the Navy, "a b$#@!ing Sailor is a happy Sailor. Myself included.) The recent HUMVEE debate is a good example. Eager soldiers saw the need to add armor plating and for that I say good on them. But truthfully if they were already armor plated, then those same soldiers would have added even more. It’s the nature of the beast. It doesn’t mean we don’t try to get them the best or “put a dent in it” as you suggest but let’s be realistic. Secretary Rumsfeld was correct in saying that you go to war with what you have. Perhaps an unpopular thing to hear but then again he isn’t trying to be our friend, he is being our leader.

I believe you are speaking of the initiative to privatize military housing (maybe not) which will ultimately put more BAH money in the pockets of our most junior personnel and give them greater options in where they choose to live. Living in base house is my absolute last choice. It’s like like living in a housing project.

I don’t work for politicians, they work for me. If you consider yourself to be owned/managed by them, I’m sure they are quite happy with that relationship.

So you caught that remark too? I mean, if that doesn’t tell you more than you want to know regarding this kind of thinking…good grief. Talk about the “me” syndrome.
It’s interesting to note how the vertical pronoun dominates the thinking of those who are willing to aid the enemy.

“***I ***have a right to express my opinon.” “You are trying to silence me.”

On the other side of the argument, you find people arguing for the troops and their safety. And the vertical pronoun people simply brush that off – “They volunteered.”

Irrelevant and a broad generalization. Needs assessment is subject to reasonable examination. If a nation is war-ready then it has reasonably examined what are predictable needs. For example, in Canada, I can’t believe we are still talking about problems with the Seaking helicopters. :banghead: Years ago it was evident they should be taken out of service. They cost lives. Canada is a prime example of what the U.S. does not want to do with its military.

Needs assessments will never be perfect nor will absolute needs be absolutely “predictable” except after the fact as most do now.

The HUMVEE example is actually a good one. Noone foresaw using them in the environment they are in now. Providing armor for all of them would not only cost more but lead to higher operating costs (MPG and engine wear). Providing for an army is a complex series of “give and take” based upon subjective predictions of the war environment coupled with fiscal realities. Unfortunately the enemy isn’t always so predictable. So sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. But the “losses” are what makes the news.

You’re dodging what I said. Just because needs assessment will never be perfect does not let people off the hook for going all out to do it the best as they can. You are suggesting that we not bother. If you don’t bother then you will end up with the Canadian military: the best darn forces in the world who are doomed to jimmyrigging the piles of junk they are given to operate, to wear bright green camos in the middle of the desert, to go against the soldier’s code of no-scrounging, and to places one’s injuries at the whims of exhausted and few-and-far-between medics. If you’re going to do a job, then make sure you do it right.
