I used to watch it occasionally about 20 years back on some nostalgia or late night rerun show. It made me laugh then because Dwayne Hickman and all his girl problems reminded me of a guy I knew back then with a similar name to “Dobie Gillis”, who similarly would spend a lot of time frowning and pondering the issues he had pining over this or that girl while other girls were throwing themselves at him and further complicating his life.

Before my husband died I was in the process of trying to watch all the episodes on streaming and I was really enjoying all the beatnik jokes as being a window into a culture that existed a few years before I was born. I may pick up where I left off and try to watch the rest of the episodes.

Off topic, but Dwayne Hickman’s brother Darryl, who made a few appearances on the show and was a child actor, was really close to Servant of God Cora Evans and almost quit Hollywood to become a monk at one point.

Supposedly the Scooby Doo gang was based on the four main characters

It’s also well-known now that the creators of the cartoon “Scooby Doo” based the teenage characters on the main characters from “Dobie Gillis”. “Fred” was Dobie, “Daphne” was Thalia Menninger, “Velma” was Zelda Gilroy, and “Shaggy” was Maynard G. Krebs.

Speaking of Dobie Gillis show, after watching part of an episode as a small boy with my older sisters, I went into the restroom where my father was shaving and greeted him by saying, “Hello Daddy-O”. He found my demeanor to be disrespectful and told me to never call him that again.

As I left the restroom, I told him, “OK, Daddy-O” and chuckled and took off running. He then chased me in his t-shirt and work pants out the front door, into our driveway, and out onto our neighbor’s sidewalk where he promptly gave me a well-deserved spanking in front of some of the neighbor kids.

It was very embarrassing, but I can assure you that I never called him “Daddy-O” ever again. 😉

Okay, now that one I watched as a kid, most likely reruns, but I did understand it. I was fascinated that Patty Duke played both parts.

The PJs.

And, King of the Hill (this one is sort of an acquired taste, if you enjoyed the show):

I didn’t watch it much, but I got a kick out the guy who kind of stutters and mumbles and is hard to understand. The character’s name was Boomhauer or something like that.

I used to think the opening line was”Boyd, the wiggling millipede.“ 🤦‍♀️

I saw the actual house used in the credits once. It looks bigger on tv.

The character’s name was Boomhauer or something like that.
He’s a great character and that is probably the spelling. It wasn’t stuttering though, just a another unique part of the show. I think the son Bobby really made the show for me.

The Mod Squad theme song just sounded like danger and excitement!

Useless trivia: Years later, I did electrical work in Aaron Spelling’s office. I saw him a few times but never actually met the man. His staff was very protective, and always scheduled construction work when he was out of the office.

Another one that I was too young to watch when it was first on, but I saw frequently in late night reruns:

The consequence being that I was able to appreciate the parody of it XTC made in the 1980s:

I liked the theme song but could never understand how she put up with her boyfriend Donald. It seemed like she spent an inordinate amount of time trying to keep Donald from being upset.
Probably practicing for real life marriage to Phil Donahue later on in life.

Decades ago, the company I worked with was opening a new branch.

I spent weeks planning, purchasing, configuring and testing.
Then the time finally came to deploy upwards of 50 computers, the network switches, routers, cables, etc.
I spent the entire weekend, and everything was working perfectly. Everything was clicking in place and working…and I am nearly 30 hours straight working on it all.

Then the front desk trainer stops me yelling “Do you realize you are whistling the theme song to the A team?”

I hadn’t, but I was committed at that point…there is a computer nerd up front, and he is being weird…so I continued and started dancing as I continued the work for the next 10 hours.

So here is the memory…enjoy.

“Sanford and Son”, posted earlier in the thread, was also inspired by a British show, “Steptoe and Son”.
Wilfred Brambell who played the elderly father Steptoe was better known to US audiences as Paul McCartney’s grandfather in “A Hard Day’s Night”.

Of course! Many American shows are copies. We were just discussing that the other day.

Speaking of Norman Lear shows, this one has a most excellent theme (and Weezie Jefferson always reminded me so much of one of my aunts, even sounded like her and wore wigs like her).

I just saw him playing a Scottish postman in “What a Whopper” with Adam Faith. I’ve been trying to watch all of Adam’s films (I’ve seen them all up through “Stardust”). Brambell was certainly a master of accents.
