But they were slaves because they were born from an enslaved mother.
Yes, this was one of the features of American slavery - it was heritable.

Also, as @ThinkingSapien points out, race in America is all about in-group/out-group mechanics. It is not really about genetics or skin color. It is about what camp one is in, and who is on the inside of that camp or the outside. As followers of Jesus, we should know that one of Jesus’ main messages was to break down those structures and treat everyone as being in-group. I like to think we have made a little progress toward that in 2,000 years, but obviously we are not there yet.

Well she can’t be too Anti-Catholic if that story is true.

Harris had no particular ties to the Catholic Church or Catholic organizations, but the money still came in large, unprecedented sums. Lawyer Joseph Russoniello represented the church on a wide variety of issues, including the handling of the church abuse scandal. He served on the Catholic Church’s National Review Board (NRB) of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. The purpose of the NRB was to review Catholic Church abuse cases. Russoniello was also a partner in the San Francisco law firm Cooley Godward. Russoniello donated the maximum amount by law to her campaign, $1,250, and his law firm added another $2,250. He also sat on Harris’s advisory council when she was San Francisco, district attorney. Another law firm, Bingham McCutcheon, which handled legal matters for the archdiocese concerning Catholic Charities, donated $2,825, the maximum allowed. Curiously, Bingham McCutcheon had only donated to two other candidates running for office in San Francisco before, for a total of $650. As with Russoniello, their support was unusual.

Was that considered “Hush Money” paid for by Catholics?

They, like observant Catholics, pay attention to what he DOES.
I think they pay attention to his rhetoric more than anything else. Do you think they examine his past conduct or how he misnames political opponents? Before he ran for office, Trump really never expressed any of the religious views which he does now.
Some say “Eres lo que tu madre es”
Don’t talk about somebody’s mama!
Why aren’t Japanese people white even though they have pale skin?
Because state legislation considered them ‘non-white’! Harry Bridges (a commie!) had to sue to marry a Japanese woman but the case only applied in one state. In the Loving v. VA case Nisei filed an amicus brief because their status was all over the place --some states let them marry whites and some did not.

" On December 8, 1958, they flew into Reno from San Francisco and the next morning went to the Washoe County Courthouse. Lawyers already had warned them. As Sawada said when asked, “Are you black, white, brown, red or yellow?” she replied, “Under those categories, I must be yellow.” Attorney Sam Frankovich told the county clerk, Harry Brown, they should be able to get married. The identical statute had, after all, been held unconstitutional in California. But Brown said that ruling didn’t affect Nevada.

So Frankovich went to a state court. Judge Taylor Wines had been appointed to district court for Elko County in 1947 and heard this case in Reno. After oral arguments, Wines ordered a recess. When Wines came back, he told the attorneys he “saw no evil which would justify the state interfering with the freedom of an individual to marry.” The crowd in the courtroom applauded. Wines told Frankovich to prepare an order. He did, and Wines signed it. Bridges and Sawada returned to the courthouse, and Brown himself tended to the license, which cost five dollars. Then Justice of the Peace William Beemer performed their wedding.

But the fight wasn’t over. The county appealed the decision. In turns, Wines wrote an order explaining that the miscegenation law violated the equal protection clause of the Fourteenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and Article One of the Nevada Constitution, which guarantees equality and our inalienable rights. But the Nevada legislature solved the problem. It passed a bill amending the original law to allow people of different races to live together after marriage. The legislature overwhelmingly approved and Governor Grant Sawyer signed it into law, eight years before the Loving decision."

The terms “white” and “black” are not descriptive, they are terms of art.

This may be harder to type (depending on your device) , but when I need filler text for a post, I sometimes used the HTML encoding for the space character. Ampersand followed by “nbsp” (without the quotes) followed by semicolon. That renders as a space, but the forum software sees it as six characters. Æsthetically, I like using this when my response is a single emoji.

I very much doubt Evangelicals care much about his rhetoric, particularly in light of his actions. Also, they’re very big on conversion. I’m guessing they’re guardedly optimistic about that.

Evangelicals are, I think, not well understood by the left.

It’s laughable that Harris would be ranked most liberal by anyone. She’s more of a moderate and an establishment Democrat. More liberal Democrats were probably disappointed that Biden picked her instead of Elizabeth Warren or Karen Bass.
She’s pretty far left. I can’t think of too many positions that would be farther left than hers.
It’s funny that conservatives consider her to be among the most liberal Democrats when many liberal Democrats, especially those who support Sanders and Warren, don’t really consider her to be one of their own. They’ll support her and Biden because they think it’s really important to defeat Trump, but they’re probably not super enthusiastic that Biden picked her.

Well this post in and of itself exposes just how far left the Dem party has swung. I find it hard to father m the majority of Americans wanting what the Dems are offering.

I think there are too many excuses and inconsistencies in the statements by evangelical leaders. Like Graham fils, Falwell, Jr. and Pat Robertson.
