Catholic Answers Forums Closing

This forum has given me valuable spiritual direction in times of doubt, low self esteem and even crisis. I don’t know what I’d go to without Catholic Answers.

It’s crazy to think that I officially joined CAF back on August 2, 2009. I was a lurker for a few months prior to that date. I was in junior high!

I have had so many meaningful discussions that I can’t have with many of my family and friends. Not many people want to discuss liturgy or Catholicism in general. I’ll miss all the wisdom that has been given to me here.

I joined the Catholicism subreddit a few months ago, so if anyone’s looking for an alternative, try it out! It’s very active.

That’s my understanding. They won’t go into specifics and never set a monetary goal though. A very basic Forum is not expensive using Discourses Standard Plan. So, I’m assuming that they were paying for their expensive Enterprise plan. I also suspect the that they were factoring in staff salaries.

The Churches have cancelled all in person activities and seem to encourage keeping our distance from one another, all while receiving the Eucharist through the TV. No dice.

Not to mention, for people with busy lives (I have 5 young kids, run a business, etc), CA was an avenue that was available 24/7. The men’s group I attended for a long time is not.

The forum needed 6500 + a month
  • High volume hosting
  • Managed Discourse installation
  • Additional security and antispam software
  • Pro moderation
  • Security auditing
  • Search engine optimization and ads (very expensive)

Sadly, it’s true. I am from Australia and I received the popup today. it must come up randomly as some people state they received it much earlier.

Before it happens, thanks to everyone who educated me, supported me and showed me ways to be a better Catholic.
It’s been short, it’s been sweet, it’s been inspirational!
If you have my email, keep in touch. If not, just ask 🙂
In the meantime, I will try to think: WWCAF do?

Lou,
I recommend you get a copy of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. It’s fairly heavy reading but covers everything about the church,. Also, of course, read the Gospels and the rest of the New Testament.
And we still have a month before the forums close, so you can ask questions meanwhile.
God bless.

I’ve learned a lot from this forum and will be forever grateful, but the experience has been mixed and the quality of participation has been declining for some time now.

Honestly, I have seen so many threads where a new comer asks a question, and by the fifth post, everyone is nitpicking and arguing. The original poster is never heard from again. It is discouraging to watch, and I am not surprised the operators of the site came to this conclusion.

Once they transferred to Discourse and discontinued “Ask an Apologist”, CAF ceased serving its primary function. It became, at best, “Catholic Opinions”. Pair that with the decrease in moderation, it’s no wonder the thing degenerated.

The new platform I think had a lot of potential. For instance, I was able to participate more because the forums were now available on my phone. However, I agree about the lack of moderation, and that the loss of “Ask an Apologist” was a huge blow.

The best thing about this new version of the forum was not having to flip pages to read the thread. And you could search the whole thread with one word search rather than having to search each page individually.

As a Catholic Convert, the forums helped me a lot. It has been a pleasure. God bless you all, my brothers and sisters. Stay cool. Stay Catholic. 🙂

Maybe, but I happen to like the old style format that CAF had over this one.
