There is normal and entirely acceptable hunting and then there is trophy hunting for endangered animals to make yourself feel more virile.
And sadly it takes one individual case to tar the whole hunting community.

For the record, I myself do not hunt for sport, as opposed to killing vermin, (I emptied a squirrel trap last week) but I know many who do.

Hunting responsibly is key to every hunter I know.

Mike Gallagher’s show brought up the very interesting point this morning that, gee, Lions are already hunted for sport legally in Zimbabwe; also other parts of Africa, what about all of those other lions?? Of course, whatever rare animal or not so rare (Canadian Geese for example), should be respected and not killed just for sporting selfish purposes. All this at the least.
Of course they are. Endangerment and hunting are not oppositional. Sadly, most who are commenting here have no clue about wildlife management.

Sidenote: I mentioned the Grey Squirrels earlier, they are actually called the “chicken of the forest” and people do eat them. They can even be found in stores in England to take home and eat.
That occurred to me too - the enormous response to this story has something to do with a personal link that people feel to this particular lion.

Very good article. 👍

*" What’s telling, however, is that the great Cecil conflagration of 2015 occurred on the same day undercover operatives released the third in a series of graphic, disturbing Planned Parenthood videos. This video, unlike the former two, featured body parts. Tiny body parts. Detailed, well formed, and unmistakably human.

But never mind. Let’s talk about Cecil, a lion…"*

I agree with Ozzy Osbourne…the world is “going off the rails on a crazy train.”

I’m sorry what? Which shops sell squirrel now?

The only people in the anglosphere that are really known for eating squirrels are American hillbillies and Bear Grylls. I think you’d probably be generally shunned for it in the UK 😃

It’s obvious the man will not be able to practice dentistry in his former town so maybe he will move here. I’m hoping he moves here and thins the nuisances of the deer, squirrels and chipmunks.

All this fuss over what this man thought was a legal hunt seems a bit much. I’ve heard that Jimmy Kimmel broke down while lambasting the character of the man. All I want to know is who is this Jimmy Kimmel guy? I’ve never seen him. Is he really popular or just someone building his own PR off of a story?

BBC of course ran with this story but failed to mention that their country has perhaps the worst track record of treating animals aside from maybe Germany.

Why do I keep hearing about this story from British people everywhere I go. It’s on BBC and this is the 2nd forum where some guy form the UK brought it up. How is this even news. Some guy illegally shot a lion and his face is getting pasted all over the news. This is borderline character assassination, which is a mortal sin.

Is that the late-night fellow from ABC?

Are the Germans that bad in their treatment of animals?

That’s a surprise to me, as IMS, they are one of a handful of nations that grant “human” rights to apes.

I’m not going to defend Walter Palmer, but this does show how seriously out of whack America’s moral compass is.

If half of the moral outrage being directed at this dentist were directed at Planned Parenthood, PP would be forced to close up shop today.
If he had paid $50k to kill babies in the womb for the convenience of the mothers, he would be hailed a hero. (protector of women’s rights and all that rot.)

Well, actually, if he was exceptionally good at doing so, he wouldn’t have to pay anything, he could earn an annual salary of $583k.

Just goes to show that NOT choosing a politically correct prey was the dentist’s biggest miscalculation AND now the hounds of political correctness are baying at his door.

He could have been living the high life and driving a Lamborghini if instead of shooting lions he had chosen to dismember human pre-born babies and sell their body parts. Obviously a regrettable error on his part.

I find it pretty gruesome that he needed to decapitate and skin the animal in order to keep his ‘trophy.’ I’m not anti-hunting per se but I think it ought to be limited to animals we can eat (and/or are pests such as snakes) and which are present in enough numbers that culling them is actually beneficial for them and us. Certainly not endangered animals (lions are not but they may be threatened.) Hunting good, trophy hunting of rare or endangered animals, bad.

I wouldn’t call for his death but he should be made to pay if he broke the law. The fact that he bribed someone $50,000 suggests that what he did wasn’t strictly legal.
Taking of trophy heads (or the taxidermization of the entire body) is SOP in trophy hunting.

And the US$50,00O was a guide fee – not a bribe.

Every news report I’ve seen described it as a bribe. Here’s an article from the Daily Mail saying he may be charged with bribery and poaching.
The daily news is a tabloid. It is a spin to call the hiring of the guides a bribe

This individual isn’t a ‘wildlife manager’ he’s an armchair adventurer. The question is morality. Who benefits from this arbitrary act? I have no problem with meat eating or culling. The only beneficiary of this act is this selfish man and his ‘guides’ and now we have three more criminals and one less unique lion. It’s clear he knows NOTHING about wildlife as experts now say that the dead lions Cubs will be killed by the new alpha male so the wanton pointless taking of a protected life has further ramifications. He should be prosecuted and if a prosecution ensures he loses his dental licence then good!

This is not culling. Doing that would mean he was sure he had the proper permits and was keeping in touch with local wildlife officials. Not to mention he wouldn’t have had to lure the lion out of the park to kill it.
What you don’t want to see is that it is common practice and not illegal to lure animals from the park. The fact that it is legal is what should be addressed. As I understand it, he had a license but the person who’s land he was hunting on does not have the permit to kill lions. I wonder if you check to see when you do business if that business has all the proper permits or do you rely on them to see to be professional?

Legal possibly but probably not. But is it moral?
