America is a melting pot of cultures as is evidenced by all the “little Italy’s” "Chinatownes, etc. We celebrate and enjoy the many different cultures.Yet it seems that many of the newer immigrants want to hold fast to their native language as well.English is our predominant language. To not expect an immigrant to fully assimilate to our Countryby becoming proficient in the English language is a cause for chaos and disunity.
I now read that language is a dialect with an army.

And English has many.

Yeah but people are complaning of more than just language…what is wrong with Taco trucks, Mexican television, mexican heritage groups. I do agree that it is ideal that they learn English, but I also truly don’t see anything wrong with naturalized US citizens maintaining their spanish language with their family and friends and cultural groups that they are members of. There are times when I wish my grandfather passed on his Italian language onto me, I have respect and honor for his heritage which is also mine. I still remember his giddiness when I went to mass with him at the age of 12, and there was a visiting Italian priest. They giddily spoke Italian together like old friends. My husband is teaching his own language to our son. That doesn’t make him any less American
Of course not. What I meant to say is it seems many of the newer immigrants have no interest in learning to speak English rather they prefer to maintain their language of origin and that is a problem. My husband is a first generation immigrant from Germany. He came here in 1962 at the age of fourteen. He learned to speak the Emglush language, while maintaining his Getman language as well.

Most children do learn the language of their new country. Most adults end up preferring the language of their youth and speak a broken version of the language of their new countries.

I remember reading a long time ago that we are most comfortable doing math and saying prayers in our mother language. Does your husband find this to be true?

I think it depends on the family. I know that my great Italian grandmother never learned a word of English. My Italian great grandmother and my Russian grandmother never spoke a word of English to each other. My nepalese mother in law and myself have never spoke a word of English to eachother. There is strong possibility that we’ll be bringing her to the US to live with my husbands siblings and her grandchildren to live out her elderly years. Otherwise she may have to stay in Nepal and live alone, which is not a good option. Shes 70, are we going to stress to much about her learning English? No not at all, shes going to live her elderly years in US with her children, its a silly idea to force an elderly 70 year old woman to learn an entire new language when all she needs and wants is to live amongst her children. This language issue amongst immigrants has been an issue since the dawn of immigration to the US, it has been an issue from even before the immigration of my great grandparents to now. I know for some people it is a key voting issue for this election, but for me its not even a blip.

Hahahahaha! Thanks for the morning chuckle. 😃

Truth be told, the best thing Mr. Trump’s advisor’s could do for his campaign is shut down his Twitter account. The ongoing damage he does to his run via that platform is unbelievable.
Then why is he closing in on Clinton?

There’s over 10 million people in the USA who speak a language at home that is not English or Spanish, and the Mass is said in 102 languages (at least) in the USA other than in English or Spanish.

Excellent point I know in my parish alone they also offer masses once a month in Vietnamese, Swahili, Spanish…in addition to the english mass.

Then why is he closing in on Clinton?
The polls are going to jump around a bit, of course. But “closing in” is not something I am seeing. Mr. Trump is many things but he is not the next President of our nation.

She’s been fundraising for the rest of the campaign and raised $143 million in August.
If my competitor were sinking his own campaign, I’d stay out of it too. Clinton is running a very traditional campaign, which means - as you point out - this was the time for fundraising. No one but us political junkies pays too much attention to the Presidential race until after Labor Day.

Speaking of which, has anyone seen her? Maybe Obama deported her too. 🙂
Yes I saw her on television speaking to an American Legion convention in Cincinnati this week and according to her website’s scheduled events page she and Sen Kaine will be in Cleveland on Monday and she will also be in Illinois on Monday at Labor Day festivals. And as Thorolfr and Little Sheep have explained, she has been fundraising for the homestretch drive toward the White House to the tune of 143 million dollars for the month of August. Maybe not such a bad strategy in August when as Little Sheep explained not a lot of people are paying attention. They’re on end of summer vacations and getting ready for their children to go back to school.

Trump catches up to Clinton, latest Reuters/Ipsos poll finds

mobile.reuters.com/article/idUSKCN1182PT

Per article, Trump 40, Clinton 39
Larry Sabato, director of the University of Virginia Center for Politics, said he remains convinced Clinton is ahead, somewhere in the range seen among the polling aggregators.
“There has been a closing that’s completely natural,” Sabato said. “Every four years, you have two national party conventions that produce a bounce of varying sizes. Clinton got a substantial bounce this year that lasted for a full month. It’s usually gone around Labor Day, and by then we’ll be where we should be, which is right around four to five points” for Clinton.
