They just finished their 20th year, so they must be doing something right! 🙂

Ten years ago we used to have a Catholic station here in Cleveland. THe mixture of music and talk programs made the station very listener friendly. However it all comes down to $$$ and there wasn’t enough to keep it going. There are times I have to shut off EWTN radio because there isn’t that balance of music and talk.

This is an awesome 2-CD collection of various Catholic artists. 32 songs.

I am a fan of all types of Christian music, all the way from Bluegrass Gospel to King’s X and The Violet Burning. But I don’t know much Catholic Christian music except for John Michael Talbot, who has been around for quite a while, and the group Iona, whom I love (but I’m not even sure they’re Catholic–they put a lot of the Celtic Catholic spirituality writings to music, though). I know The Violet Burning mentions Mary often in songs, but again, I don’t know even if they are Catholic.

So here’s the question: Favorite music artists that are specifically Catholic (and their genre, please)?

IGNORE ABOVE–I found what I’m looking for on the “Christian Artists” thread. Thanks!

I’d like to ask some opinions from you all about the modern Catholic Christian music that’s out there these days. Are there any of these artists that stir your soul in particular? I have to admit I have found it hard to appreciate much of it. I love Catholic radio but when the music starts I turn the volume way down. Music has such a potential of evoking tremendously deep profundity, pathos and joy and I am suprised I don’t find a great deal of that from Catholic artists today. Especially because I suppose this music comes from artists that are likely decent Catholics. I don’t know if I am being over critical from having been a musician a long time, but I really am a music lover first (actually lover of God 1st :)) and a musician second. I’m always willing to expose my ears to new artists and genres because after all our tastes are often cultivated by listening practice. If anyone would like to share any of their favorite artists or comments in general please do.

I have listened to some obscure christian music from the mid-1500s and it wasn’t really that good, either.

I view christian music like all music. When you listen to stuff coming out this year you’ll find most of it is not listenable. When you listen to music from the fifties, for example, you will hear only the time tested and best music from an entire decade. It’s been filtered over time. Even more extreme, when you listen to classical or baroque, or gregorian, you are listening to the “best of”… time tested music collected over decades or centuries!

The larger the time frame, the better chance you will find something you enjoy. (Maybe it’s because only the most naturally listenable stuff survives over centuries.) Although I admit to knowing some friends only like the latest, most obscure, atonal and eclectic stuff, stuff I didn’t think was very good. I like good melody and harmony. Atonal disharmony isn’t my thing.

I have a large variety of Christian music that I like, currently on the list are:

Toby Mac (formerly of dc Talk) especially his new cd ‘Portable Sounds’
Pillar
Disciple
PAX 217
Steven Curtis Chapman
Mark Schultz
Michael W. Smith
Tree 63
Casting Crowns
Building 429
12 Stones
Blindside
Jars of Clay
Jeremy Camp
Newsong

Hey there!

I noticed no one mentioned my favorite Catholic rock band - Katholicus. Has anyone else heard of them? These guys rock hard with great guitar work and Catholic lyrics. They say they are melodic hard rock. To me, they sound like the pop-metal music from the 80s and early 90s (before grunge came) and I love that sound and style. Their latest cd is called “Upon This Rock.” You can hear 2 minutes samples from their CDBaby site: www.cdbaby.com/cd/katholicus2. These guys definitely deserve our support. Their site is www.katholicus.com and their leader always responds to my emails.👍

👍 I like them. They are on the “Catholic Music 2007” CD - song called “The Gift”.

I just wrote about this very topic here.
I’ve never heard ApologetiX, but I love Nick Alexander. The parody songs give me a smile - and a message.

Icthus - (Footloose)
Therese of Lisieux - (Electric Avenue)
These Forty Days (King of Pain)

I listen to CCM on my car radio, and I find it so much better than the classic rock or top 40 stations I used to listen to, and way more uplifting than political talk radio. I also have several CDs by Catholic artists.

DONNA CORI GIBSON - definitely! 👍 👍 My favorite cd of hers is “That We May Be One” (although “Divine Mercy” is right up there)

John Michael Talbot is good to pray to, as is Abba Pater (and of course Gregorian Chant or “Ave Maria”)

I also like some of John Tesh’s p & w cds
