Looking at these posts, its clear we are all very different in our choices for musical inspiriation - I sometimes wonder whether people mingle the two worlds of praise/worship music and the music we like for entertainment? I have recently joined the parish choir and I am particularly enjoying singing the psalms - we are learning some more modern and contemporary settings of the psalms which i really love - the obvious ones by dan schute marty haogen etc. alongside traditional psalm tones. Last week, we learned a setting for the ‘Canticle of Daniel’ (V.Goldsack ??) which is particularly uplifting. If anyone has any suggestions for more contemporary psalm canticle settings, please post - we need more material.
blessings to all, Anne

Thanks for that link to Adam’s music, interesting but not quite the ‘sacred’ sound we use in church … more like personal worship music - we are trying to expand our repetoire of sacred psalms etc. that will fit into a liturgical setting and if anyone can point me to more of this type of music we would be grateful.

peace on earth to all 🙂

His CD’s don’t have the psalms on them. They are completely different. The CD’s were written to sell as a CD.

The psalms he actually writes for Mass

oh i didnt realize there is a difference ! I’ll look again ! thanks:)

As a new member of the Catholic family, I find that one of the ways in which our Heavenly father touches me most deeply is through music. I–and many others, I hope–would love to hear about your favorite Catholic ( or non-anti-Catholic Christian) musicians, CDs, songs, sheet music, etc.

Just to get things rolling, my current fascination consists of the first three CDs by mercyme (I said I was new, didn’t I?).

So, what about you? 🙂
I guess it depends on what kinds of music you like. I kinda like a bit of everything. Some of my favorite music is more on the rock side of the spectrum. Some of the most moving songs (to me) are some of the loud melodious songs. e.g. “Stand in the Rain” by Superchick, “Breathe Into Me” by Red, “Breathe YOu In” by Thousand Foot Crutch, “Savior” by Skillet, etc. The list goes on. As you probably noticed, all of these bands are Christian Rock bands. I dpn’t listen to much secular - I hate all of the dirty lyrics, etc. in them.

I hope this helps. Hey, another good singer is Chris Tomlin and Casting Crowns.

Blessings…👍

The board has been contacting Catholics of all stripes about such lists–if these artists chose not to participate, even with superior product, you can’t blame the list for their apathy.

Regardless, if you create an iMix of your favorite Adoration chants, I would be more than happy to submit it to the board.

A wonderful up-and-coming, Catholic musician is Paul Harrigan. He has a couple of CDs of original music out that are really good. See paulharrigan.com.

I’m not sure if this question belongs in “traditional” or " contemporary", but I’ll try here first.

I’m looking for advice on how to find the following:

Recordings of recent Catholic service mainstays…
Stuff written mostly in the 1970s–familiar music that has been commonly used over the last few decades. Examples would include “Here I Am, Lord”, “Be Not Afraid”, “The Summons”, “Where Charity and Love Prevail”.

…that are well-produced and performed
I’ve found good artists who sing things I am not familiar with, and I’ve found the music I am familiar with sung in front of what sounds like MIDI music. But I’ve yet to find a high-quality collection.

I’m sure this exists, but any help I can get will be appreciated.

Thanks!

Your best bet, in my opinion, is “City of God” and “Table of Plenty” by John Michael Talbot. Your second bet is to seek out the band “Romans”, which has wonderfully melodic-rock versions of the same songs.

Also, go to catholicmusicnetwork.com, and search for individual songs/MP3s. Some artists, like Gretchen Harris and Kitty Cleveland, have covers of individual songs done well.

Thanks Nick, I’ll check those out, they look like the kind of stuff I am looking for…I’ll let you know how things work out!

I want to recommend Silvia Mariella for anybody who likes music in Spanish or music with a latino flavor.

Many of her songs seem to me to be standards from prayer meetings I have been to.

But her voice is so good and her band is so lively that they really come alive at a new level.
