Try Kara Klein. She is a Catholic singer-songwriter who takes a strong stand on chastity and life issues. She writes her own songs about a lot of thingsCatholic youth have to deal with - chastity, loving God, occasional doubt etc.

Her 3 full albums can be bought on Itunes for much cheaper than buying on her site, and the rest of her work (a rosary CD with two exclusive songs and a DVD of tribute videos to Terri Schindler-Schiavo and those affected by Virginia Tech and Hurricane Katrina) can be bought from her site. $1 from every online album sold goes to the Susan B. Anthony List, an organization that helps pro-life women get into Congress.

For those of you who enjoy rock songs try songs like the Beatle’s “Let it Be” or “Give Me Love”. George Harrison’s “My Sweet Lord” is also a genious work. And when it comes to Christianity in rock and roll, one has to mention the absolutely awsome “Spirit in the Sky”.

Ok, couple of problems here.

One: “Let it Be”, like it or not, is not about the Blessed Virgin, but about Paul McCartney’s mother.
Two: “Give Me Love” is not Beatles–it’s solo George.
Three: “My Sweet Lord” is not a genius work–it is a derivative work that was sued by the songwriters behind “He’s So Fine”–and George lost.
Four: Did you forget the Hare Kristnas that plague the coda of the My Sweet Lord?
Five: “Spirit in the Sky” has the non-orthodox verse “Never been a sinner, I never sinned; I got a friend in Jesus”. The song is actually a satirical jab against the Jesus movement.

Hey, I like the Beatles as much as anybody, but let’s call a spade a spade, shall we? Better go after really good songs in their repertoire, like Blackbird or Help or Nowhere Man (the latter two being John’s cries for help or sharing about himself in the third person), or We Can Work it Out. We can thank the Beatles for the great music that has indeed lasted all these years, being a great influence among exceptional songwriters both secular and Christian (esp someone like Phil Keaggy or Pray For Rain).

Even so, these songs don’t belong in this thread. Sorry. Best to aquaint yourself with quality Catholic music out there before recommending secular stuff to the board…

Well, I conceed that “Let It Be” may not have been about Mary( I always naturally assumed it was simply because of the lyrics), but whether or not it matters that “Give Me Love” is Beatles or solo George is up for debate. Also, whether or not Harrison’s “My Sweet Lord” is original doesn’t affect the song’sreligious nature. Yes there are a number of titles for God in the song from other faiths, but these titles do have meanings that could be applied to the Christian God. For instance, Hare Krishna means “the all-attractive one”. I never heard that "Spirit in the Sky"was a satrical jab against the Jesus movement although in hind sight that could be, but I would hardly call “My Sweet Lord” or “Give Me Love” secular. Thank you for critiquing my post.

God Bless.

My point is that the thread is focusing on Contemporary Catholic Music, and all of your suggestions are from secular artists, and in George Harrison’s case, an artist who left the faith for Eastern religion, going so far as to incorporate the chantings in his new worldview into the song. And I say this liking most of the late George Harrison’s output, along with the Beatles.

You would be doing yourself a favor by recoginzing that what you wrote belongs in its own non-sticky thread, and you focus instead on songs from Catholic musicians. If you are unfamiliar with Contemporary Catholic music, read thru this thread and give a listen to some of these artists. Or go to a site like www.topcatholicsongs.com and be introduced thru the iMixes and YouTube videos embedded on that page.

Welcome to the board. There’s a lot out there just itching to be discovered. Catholic artists dedicated to creating great music that uplifts and entertains do not need to have their threads muddied by artists, already in the public consciousness, who do not share the same Catholic convictions…

The top song is by Michael Card. When did he become Catholic?
Believe me, if a Catholic had written a better contemporary song about St. Paul, I would have used it. But Michael Card is a friend of Catholics, and all Catholics would do better to study the artistry of this extraordinary musician. Have you heard it?

The topcatholicsongs site will occassionally profile songs from non-Catholics, in so keeping that the songs themselves are songs that Catholics can grow from and be inspired by. The vast majority of the songs on the site, however, are from Catholic musicians.

Did you ask that question on the topcatholicsongs board?

Yes, I liked him when I was a Protestant. I thought we weren’t supposed to hang on to our Protestant music after conversion, though.

My favourite Catholic singers at this particular moment are Scott Kelly, Mark Mallet, and Eric Genuis. 🙂

Denis Grady is also a good singer, but I don’t think he does his own writing, though - and his web site seems to have gone down. 🤷

No - I didn’t realize there was a board. Perhaps I will. 🙂

Funny, I didn’t get that directive from my RCIA manual.

Seriously, the guy has been carried in St. Paul’s Books and Media stores, did an album with John Michael Talbot (which got him ostracized from a major anti-Catholic magazine and he has not retained his musical standings ever since), and did an album of Irish covers containing some of the best Irish Catholic hymns. As far as I see it, be nice to him, he has a strong Catholic sensibility for a Baptist.

Also, the post made a very specific point of emphasizing that that particular list was a mix of Catholic Contemporary, Christian contemporary and classical songs.

Be sure to check out the other posts there… you’ll find many artists to recognize… including Mark Mallett, who has been very active on the board.

Hi, All!
I got most of my Michael Card CD’s from St. Paul Book and Media stores, but I currently get them from CBD Warehouse, because it’s easier. Did you know that he has a song called “Eucharist;” I think that he is as close to Catholic as you can get without actually being Catholic. He writes Bible studies, too; although I do not use those. Maybe he will be like another Scott Hahn.
He is my #1 favorite contemporary Christian artist; my #2 is Steven Curtis Chapman. I love their sound, as well as their lyrics.

i just attend regularly the Holy Mass and Prayer Meetings so i could learn new praise and worship songs aside from praying.

I know of two Catholic Artists that have incorporated “Let It Be” into their music list. When they sing it, it IS about BVM.

I just got the Mysteries CD by Danielle Rose. I’d heard a couple of her songs before. The songs on Mysteries are all based on the Rosary. Wow. I heard last year that Daniell Rose joined a Religious Order.

Just discovered a great Catholic band called “CheerUp Charlie”. It has a more alternative sound-My teenager loves them.

But I must list my all-time favorite contemp. Christian singer as Mathew West. Look him up on youtube “Only Grace” “You Are Everything” and “More”. I will be seeing him in concert next month. Yay me!

Although I’ve already seen her mentioned a few times, but I just wanted to add that I also LOVE Danielle Rose’s music, which I just discovered recently. Her voice is very beautiful and pure, and her lyrics are unabashedly Catholic but, unlike many Christian musicians/bands, they are not “cheesy.”

Some Favorite Songs:
“God Is”
“I Thirst”
“Small Things With Great Love”
“Litany of Humility”
“See you in the Eucharist” (not on CD yet; I saw it on YouTube)

Coming late to this thread (and new to the forum), but I’ve enjoyed reading the reolies.

Good to see a number of my favorites mentioned here, including a bunch I’ve had the blessing to minister with. I may have missed this in an earlier post, but one contemporary artist who cuts across a range of styles is John Angotti.

His site: johnangotti.com/

Glad to see the vibrant interest in Catholic music…all that singing and praying twice has got to pay off, eh?

Sorry if my tastes are different than all of yours, but my favorite Christian singers are KJ-52 and Nichole Nordeman. KJ-52 has more of a rap kind of feel. He’s often compared to Eminem, but his lyrics are obviously more religious than Slim Shady’s. Meanwhile, Nichole has more of a soft, pop sort of tone. They’re complete opposites but both really great singers.

Hi,

I am coming late to the thread also. My favorite Contemporary Catholic musicians are David Haas, Lori True and Michael Joncas. Their music shows so much passion and retains a sacredness that leads me in to prayer.

For instrumental music, Stephen Petrunak has been nominated for a 2009 GMA Dove Award for his album “Love beyond All Measure”, featuring his own arrangements of liturgical and other religious music.

Thanks,
Geri
