Do you think priests should be allowed to marry?

Poll after poll has shown that a very large number of catholic priests favor an option to marry. More then half of all catholics in the USA believe priests should have the option to marry. Its very obvious the catholic church is out of touch with its laity and its priests. Should all of these priests be excommunicated for their honesty. Why can’t nuns marry? Why can’t a man become a nun? We have men doctors/women doctors. We have female nurses/male nurses. The church keeps the devout in line with FEAR/GUILT and the possibility of committing a sin. Thats sad, but it works for the church.
Code:
The catholic church says men will receive a calling from god to become a priest. If a married man got a calling from god the catholic church would trump god and say "no your not, we make the rules".....UNBELIEVABLE!!
Yes and if a woman gets a “calling from G-d” she also will need to find another calling. If one flunks out of seminary, the calling will change also.
Now to my point…if the polls of priests regarding this matter are overwhelmingly in favor of priests being allowed to marry…then maybe the rules would be changed, but the implications are complicated in the extreme…too complicated to cover in a post. I heard and cannot document…that most priests are satisfied with the current rules. Whatever the decision in the future I will not change my opinion of our hardworking and dedicated priests.
You are an anti Catholic invincibly ignorant bigot. The question I have for you is…how does our Churches “rules” effect you? If you aren’t affected…why do you whine about them…just worship whatever you do or do not worship and leave us happy members and believers alone in our “sadness”.

I would like to know if you think priests should be allowed to marry and still stay in the priesthood… If so, Why or why not??
Yes! EC Priests can be married. Every EC Priest I have known have wonderful loving families.

Where is that coming from? I don’t think it was meant critically. Just explaining that priests do not live in the lap of luxury with every need taken care of. True, they do not take a vow of poverty but most still live with very modest means.
I know that and the question was referring to the poster that I put it with. I have a great love and admiration for our CELIBATE Priests. I don’t think they have any caused ANY problems, it was the one’s who didn’t remain celibate that did. I also was speaking only of the Roman Catholic Latin Rite when I did speak. (Just to clairfy things a bit more.) I just don’t understand anyone who claims to speak for them, they know how to speak for themselves and when someone comes on here as a “tell all” about their finances that it is really none of their business.
One other thing, some DO take vows of poverty.

I knew you weren’t speaking to me. I just thought you had jumped on the poster who was obviously responding to someone else who acted like priests had it made as far as having ALL their needs and wants met and he/she was trying to show that they didn’t.😊 Maybe I’ll just go watch TV…we’re getting a little cranky in here.
btw, I don’t think any secular priests take vows of poverty. That’s who I was referring to.

That’s okay, I’m not cranky, just seems that way on these threads, I guess. I was just trying to explain it to you is all. 🙂

ok here is the official church teaching. ccc 1579 quote. All ordained ministers of the Latin Church, with the exception of permanent deacons are normally chosen from among men of faith who live a celibate life and who intend to remain celibate. for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Called to consecrate themsleves with undivided heart to the Lord and to the affairs of the Lord they give themselves entirely to God and to men. Celibacy is a sign of this new life to the service of which the churchs minister is consecrated, accepted witha joyous heart celibacy radiantly proclaims the Reign of God. unquote Now that is the Roman Catholic Churchs stand and always has been. The eastern churches have a different disicipline. Married men can be ordained as deacons and priests. again this is not the Roman Catholic rule. Hope that clears things up.

Ps Cathdefender if obama gets in your wont have to leave the country the other country will come to you.

No, the reason being that priests work 24/7 dedicated to God. There is no room for a wife and children, holy matromony is just the same. A person should be married 24/7

Priests are following in the footsteps of Christ. It is only man made if you want to call Jesus the man.

P.S. If Obama gets in, I am leaving the country…
For the Love of Peter Paul and Mary, stop trying to assign divine mandate to a rule the Catholic Church CLEARLY states is man made. Read the CCC # 1580…“In the Eastern Churches [Catholic Churches, not Orthodox] a different DISCIPLINE has been in force for many centuries…”
Celibacy has NEVER been universal in the Catholic Church and is not currently universal even in the Latin Rite…I know several married priests in the Latin Rite…are these men not following in Christ’s footsteps? Are the less priests by being married?

PETER was married, was he less of a priest? Was HE not following the footsteps of Christ? NO WHERE does Christ mandate celibacy for priests, in fact, the scriptures reveal most presbyters were married…celibacy is a tradition not a Tradition, easily changeable…and the Latin Rite of the Catholic Church is the only part of the Catholic Church which REQUIRES celibacy…so all these other priests aren’t following Christ?

I was speaking of today of the Roman Catholic Priests of the Latin Rite, in the future I will try to be more specific for those who might be offended, I surely did not try to offend anyone. Seems to me that some people assume too much sometimes too.
And your response to Latin Rite priests who are married and still have faculties to preside publically?

…and may I ask who you think you are that you have your nose in their business anyway and then bring it to these boards?
I’m a Catholic guy who has several close friends who are priests who have shared this information publically and don’t make any bones about it…who are you to question me on this? And yes, the point of the post was to reveal that priests generally don’t live “high on the hog” but struggle to make ends meet.

The tradition of the Church is not set in historical stagnant rule but even so the excepetion is dogma that remains the same, the celibacy debate has always had people who disagree and misunderstand the purpose of this virtue. I am a strong advocate of celibacy, the experiences I have had in relationships with women even plutonic have meant distraction, every person is on their own path towards God, when with someone you become their partner, not Jesus’s partner or more accuratly the Church’s, the spouse of Christ.
Peter was exceptional in the fact that we do not know how the relationship with his wife, how did she handle the fact that he was destined to be martyed, what did she say when he was on mission , in danger? Is their a woman who would let a husband go do his death? Mary even cried and grieved at the Passion.

Dear all,

The Roman Catholic Priests, today would like to follow the example of Jesus, eventhough celibacy is not required by Jesus at that time. Other Priests from other denominations may choose to follow the bible, and the RCC never condemn that. The RCC priests prefer to follow Jesus as in Mat 19:12.
