Do you/would you carry a concealed firearm to Mass?

I said people. This means the laity.
So you make a distinction. If, for example, there were a policeman in uniform and armed, it would not concern you? Or if security required armed officers? I am thinking something like a head of state who needed a security contingent.

Exactly.

But then again, if Churches need armed guards in general and regularly, something is wrong.

As clarified above, I do not mean armed guards, security, or military. The Swiss Guard serves as the de facto military of Vatican City.

There is no evidence that gun homicide dropped as a result of the buyback; comparison between Australia and other Western countries after the buyback reveal that gun homicide was actually higher than normal.

And I for one feel safer knowing that people in my parish – people I know personally – carry a firearm.

I never said the homicide rate dropped in Australia at all. (Another article can be found here)

I said that gun deaths are tragic.

The majority of Australians do not own guns and concealed carry isn’t really a thing here.
So yes, it weirds me out and is one of the reasons I am not really ever going to go to the Americas. Guns have the opposite effect on me, and they make me feel incredibly unsafe. My husband shares the same view.

if Jesus was pro sword, then Jesus would have a sword himself. I cannot imagine Jesus hiding behind other people with swords, in the hope that they would defend him.
Nah. He had the legions of angels waiting on his command. And they had all the swords.

Catholic Study Bible

Matthew 26:53

53 Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me more than twelve legions of angels?

26:53 twelve legions: In the Roman army, a “legion” consisted of nearly 6,000 soldiers.

But its your country your laws if you want crazy people to own guns so be it
this is the problem. we can’t stop crazy people from getting guns. it is illegal for many people to own guns but because of the vast black market and porous borders everything is available in the states. these people obtain guns one way or another.

we deal with it by protecting our own and not relying on others

Because they aren’t farmers, not are they going to sporting events. Thus if they were carrying concealed firearms in Australia they would be doing so illegally.

I don’t like rurally so…yeah? Pretty sure the Italian grandparents in my neighbourhood are more concerned about housing prices for the grandchildren than carrying a gun.

🤣

I never said they were?

I said that military, armed guards and security are not part of what I consider normal laity.

FWIW, those in the Vatican City who are armed with firearms and not halyards wear black or grey business suits and not Swiss Guard uniforms… 😉

A priest in a parish I was in had a prior parish in Alaska. He liked to go hunting and give away moose, caribou, and bear meat (salmon too, but of course that was fishing, not hunting) to poor families.

I think his hunting was mostly with rifles, but I would bet that he was familiar with pistols and revolvers. One of his other posts was as a priest at an Air Force base.

Would he have shot somebody who was gunning down parishioners? I’m guessing yes, but I am not sure. Would he have concealed carried to mass? I don’t know, but I’m guessing not. I doubt if he would have been particularly perturbed to find out that some of his parishioners were engaged in concealed carry though.

He was a really happy holy old guy. He loved getting out in the woods and getting in contact with God’s bounty. He told me how much he loved saying mass either by himself or with a few fellow hunters. He loved helping his parishioners too. He loved giving away those cuts of meat; he loved eating it too, as his waistline showed. If he knew about this post, he would probably laugh. He was as jolly as Santa Claus, similarly proportioned, and even had a grey and white beard, although it wasn’t as big as Santa’s. 🙂

Definitely not although I am from Australia so that would be illegal here anyway.
I understand your feelings and concerns, but at the same time I would refrain from using terms like “crazies” and remind yourself that they are Gods children too.
The reality is that in this day and age these sort of attacks can happen anywhere-even going to dinner at restaurant-and not just necessarily at Church.
Please consider praying for God to make you feel more safe but also to be provided insight into why people are doing Church shootings -ie:what is going on with them internally that makes them want to target Churches or Christians at Church specifically-and ask God how he can use you to change their hatreds, misconceptions, mindsets etc…

In which case, people with Concealed Pistol Permits ARE armed guards. They are armed (legally) with the intent of guarding themselves and their loved ones.

They have no less legal authority to be armed than the police do.

In addition, even the guys in the morions and halberds are armed. They carry SIG pistols in their breeches.

And there are generally snipers wearing military utilities in places that you do not see.
