Don't Hate Me. I Am Going To A SSPX This Sunday

You might be right. I can’t find the AAA answer to this. I thought I had it bookmarked. I’m sure Michelle Arnold quoted a Church document about SSPX Mass not fulfilling the Sunday obligation except in some rare instance. I’ll contact her.
The conditions as I understand them,
  1. you attend one due to a true devotion to the Traditional Mass
**AND **
  1. you DO NOT adhere to the schismatic acts and intentions of the the late Archbishop,
**AND **
  1. there is NO Indult Mass or , now I would suppose any Traditional Mass offered, remember this was addressed to situations prior to the Motu Proprio,
It would be OK to attend one. It would also be OK to make a donation to the collection at that facility.

True devotion to the Traditional Form seems to be the guiding principle in this and not merely an aversion to the Pauline Rite itself.

In any event attending one would normally fulfill the Sunday obligation even if one dropped in out of curiosity. The problem would come in repeatedly attending them

AND/OR

coming to agree with the schismatic acts of the late Archbishop.

That is at least my understanding of the situation.

And no, I have never been to one, although when I see some of the nonsense that happens I do get tempted. Sorely tempted, but I’ve never been to one…

The OP is looking like a schismatic by this exagerated ‘preference’ for the TLM and preferring a SSPX mass due to schedule conflicts.
I agree that that is how it appears but I do not know what is in his heart. My only concern for appearances is how the bishops might perceive any traditionalists in their parishes.

The OP can’t slip in under these -

OP suggested it as a way of AVOIDING (rejecting?) a licit, valid mass

there are several other TLM masses offered in the area (but the schedule does not ‘suit’ the OP)

and it is not being done ‘out of curiousity’

My wife bought us and my daughter tickets to a kids’ concert at the Harris Theatre at Millennium Park for 12:30pm, the same time I attend the TLM at Holy Angels in Aurora, IL.

I investigated times around Chicago and Our Lady Immaculate in Oak Park offers a 10am Mass. That’s my best bet.

I have gone to every Latin Mass in Aurora since it was offered and I refuse to miss a Sunday. Unfortunately, I have been spoiled and I refuse to attend a Novus Ordo. I don’t want to return to the same rut I was in. The Latin Mass breathed new life into my faith.

I know people here frown on SSPX but I am making a big mistake if I go to just one Mass?
I think you had already made up your mind long before you posted this…and your reason for posting? To ask permission? To hope that someone changes your mind? To hope for a debate? My guess is that it might have been to stir the post and create a thread of dispute.

If you intend to go, why care what anyone here thinks? Have you changed your mind knowing there are many alternatives, even to include the Eastern Rite? Maybe dissention was the motive?

Only if you think of it as a Catholic mass. It isn’t, any more than an Orthodox Divine Liturgy or the Polish National Catholic Church or the Peoples’ Patriotic Church of China.

Either you are Catholic, in union with Rome, and obeying the Church, or you are not. The SSPX are in schism (whether or not the proponents will admit it), and the priests claim to still be in the church, when they have in fact ignored the papal instructions to stop functioning as priests.

I do not believe you are truly following the thread.

OP is facing going to an OF mass because of SCHEDULE issues in order to go to an event with family. The OP is in no way being judged for preference in general but for willingness to go to illicit mass vs a licit one over a SCHEDULE issue.

OP does not give a good reason for going to an ILLICIT mass - simple.
What exactly is your problem with the TLM? I want to know if I can attend SSPX and still fulfill my Sunday obligation. I can see you reprimanding me for missing Sunday Mass altogether, but I am making an effort to attend a Latin Mass instead of a NO that fits my schedule for THIS Sunday.

I liken it to watching a movie with subtitles. It’s the same movie, but I would get more out of it if I watched it its original tongue.

This what baffles me…what you can get out of it. It isn’t about what you get…it’s about what you GIVE. There are alot of people going to charismatic denominations based on the same thing…what they get for a feeling. And Mass isn’t about us getting…it’s our giving. Kathie

In the absence of better wording, I don’t care what this group thinks. I only care what is right with the Church and, ultimately, God. I just want to go to a Latin Mass. If anyone has any information on a Latin Mass before noon tomorrow, I will gladly go. To make it clear, I will avoid the SSPX if I can find a TLM that fits my time constraint.

I joined this forum because I was hoping to find people supportive of my return to the Church through the Tridentine Mass, but I have really met some fierce and ugly opposition. I am simply asking for help and all I am getting is “go to hell if you want” talk.

Thank you to those who offered links, times, and support. I really do appreciate it. For those who cast judgments on my valid preferences, I hope God reminds you of your place in this world and that there is only one True Judge.

Nevermind, a member here pointed me toward a 10:30am Latin Mass at St. Mary of Perpetual Help. Thanks for the link and problem solved!

I really do appreciate your help. It’s refreshing to know people here are ready to help.

I am so glad to hear that you’ve found a Mass that works for you! 🙂

What you are finding an opposition to what seems to be spitting on the Church by rejecting the OF so much that you would prefer a church in schism (and fail to meet Sunday obligation) over a schedule conflict.

Get over your ‘preference’ - it is not worth MISSING Sunday Mass just because there isn’t one WHEN you want it.

You will effectively be missing mass altogether if you go to the SSPX mass - I have given you info about that and so have some others.

Others have also given me information refuting your position. Who shall I believe? Either way, I am going to fulfill my obligation so you don’t need to lose sleep over my schism.

I gave you the info from the Ask an Apologist area – you going to take the info you seem to want over the official apologists for CAF?

You situation does not fit the loophole for when it is OK – you have access to other parishes offering the TLM - you just can’t get a time you want - so this comes down to selfishness on your part and perhaps something darker.

Duke,

Glad I could help!

Stay away from schismatic movements, no good can come of it. Support the traditional Latin Mass in all the “approved” churches!

God bless!

It’s not the Latin Mass everyone is up in arms about…it’s the choice of SSPX when there are choices in communion. By the way, go to a Byzantine Liturgy and be blessed by their heaven on earth Liturgy…and if you haven’t been, it would be great to learn something about our Eastern Rite. Our Eastern brethren want this Latin Rite to know them. They certainly know us…and we should know them.

Talk about Traditional. I have a very traditional Coptic Catholic rite you can attend this weekend, rather than something schismatic.

I’d double-check the Mass time, if I were you. Someone mentioned that this is a 8:30am Mass.

Just looking out for you. 🙂
