English Catholics

Very interesting convo everybody! Excuse me as I do my Saturday errands, look forward to returning šŸ™‚

My friends and family are atheists and they give me a hard time sometimes about my beliefs, especially my belief in the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist.

They tell me that makes me gullible at best and stupid at worst.

I think Patrick was captured and taken to Ireland from what we now call Wales.
Yes I believe thatā€™s true. At that time, Wales was part of Roman Britain. And modern Wales is part of Britain; in fact, itā€™s very close to England because it shares our legal system - unlike Scotland which has its own.

And when you think things couldnā€™t get worst, along come the Normans infecting the English language with French words.

Seriously speaking, I sometimes wonder how different the English language would be if the Normans were defeated.

Iā€™m not the only one it seems.

Yes. Several English Kings consecrated England to Mary and gave the land to her as her dowry. Itā€™s not very well known but England is still Maryā€™s dowry.

A thread entitled ā€œEnglish Catholicsā€ , and before long out come the stereotypes of Catholics , Anglicans , the English , immigration , Asians , Muslims , Islamicism (whatever that is) .

Itā€™s a pity we donā€™t relate to persons rather than to labels .

I say ā€œFarewellā€ to this thread as an Englishman who still believes forbearance is one of the nations better qualities .

šŸ‘ This will always be the right attitude.

I donā€™t think this conversation is as bad as you suppose though, people have a right to express themselves, and itā€™s the only way we can grow by sharing our opinions and taking on board what others have to say in response.

Seems a little thin-skinned of you, Rob. Discussing Our Ladyā€™s dowry is so off-putting? Shame to lose your perspective, but still wish you a fine day nonethelessā€¦

Wales shares the same legal system as the country was invaded and put under English rule.

So in fact, Muslims donā€™t make up even the 10 % I quoted. Perhaps thatā€™s in certain areas.

For those who havenā€™t looked up the stats, Muslims in 2018 comprised a little over 3 million in a population of just over 60 million.

Hardly likely to be the majority in 50 years as Saxum predicted.

Immigration + birth rates = Muslim majority. Itā€™s inevitable. The British are contracepting and arenā€™t replacing the population. The same thing is happening all over Europe. Weā€™re headed for a demographic crisis.

I think in Saxonā€™s defence, thatā€™s the whole of the UK. Heā€™s concerned with the cities he knows. Itā€™s good to voice our concernsā€¦and itā€™s good to take account of the actual figures, too.
Itā€™s inevitable.
I donā€™t agree that itā€™s inevitable. I suppose that certain towns and cities will have much higher ratesā€¦ as they do already. I expect the figure is much higher currently in England and Wales, when compared to the whole of the UK though. But our job as Christians is to love our neighbour. This includes everyone.

About half of our vocabulary is derived from Norman Frenchā€¦ modern English and pre-Norman Anglo-Saxon are unintelligible.

I love my country, I am a patriot.
English is a crazy languageā€¦ right there you have a Saxon derived word (country) and a French derived word (patriot)ā€¦

My main issue isnā€™t Islam per se. The real issue is the de-Christianisation of England. This means that Islam will one day be the main religion here; that is, unless our Sikh brothers start coming here in droves.

People may disagree, but my idea of England is captured in the following words: Cross, Crown, Common Law. Of these three, the Cross is the most important. I just worry that the Cresent Moon will one day obscure the Cross. When and if that day comes, English culture will be six foot under.

I didnā€™t suppose that you were anti Islam in what youā€™ve written. I detected a certain amount of alarm and perhaps fear of what you see as inevitable. I have to say that we are to fear Him who can destroy both body and soul, only.

Logically, most young British people are never gonna give up getting drunk on a weekend and eating bacon so thatā€™s a no to it ever being a predominantly Muslim country. The racists will ā€˜take careā€™ of that too. Christians are already in the minority - literally the closest most people get to church is ticking a box on a form saying ā€˜Christianā€™. ā€˜What religion are youā€™? ā€˜C of Eā€™ cos their grandparents used to go to church and they might have done a nativity play at school and sang all things bright and beautiful at a wedding. Glib post I know but hopefully you see what I mean. We are already living in post Christian England. Live out the faith and be the best version of the Gospel you can be
