No I’m not joking at all. What about Newsweek? That too?
I would like to encourage you to read various publications (left, right center, etc.) via the Internet and/or by picking up a few copies at the news stand. Pick out one particular issue like this current Health Care Reform Bill (so-called)
Then, read all of them with a mindset, and the neutrality of a Judge presiding over a trial in a court room. You must keep** truth** as a bell weather.
Admittedly it is tough to do such an exercise when we all have certain bias’, but do try.
Such an exercise (and my faith) moved me slowly centrist, and then what some may see as conservative.
👍

BTW, I’m no follower of Beck, however he speaks truth on many levels pertaining to what the founding fathers of this country intended, and the fact that there is a “progressive” movement (socialist) that is hard at work attempting to tear down our form of government.
As one who’s family immigrated from the USSR, I can tell you that what I see is eerily familiar and unnerving.
It seems that many of these liberal politicians who push this “progressive” agenda truly look at life through rose colored glasses, and forget who they work for.
I know all too well why they want American’s guns.
Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot and Mao, all banned guns.
Why? Because an unarmed citizen is a controllable subject. Why do you think the liberals continue to try to ban guns, but the founding fathers were so clear about the right to own guns? The founding fathers wanted you to be free, but the liberals want you to be a controllable subject.

I read that earlier and that may truly be the case. In this instance, he failed and only brings attention to those who support him with what looks to me to be unconditional loyalty. Since he alienated many others, then it would be a case of poor judgement. I have never been a fan of using insults and exaggeration for shock value.
Failed? The Internet is replete with forums like this talking about what he said, and about his clarification. I think he accomplished what he wanted. People will surely listen a little closer to what is being preached to them, no?
"Unconditional loyalty to Beck?!?!?
He’s pundit, nothing more, and nothing less!
He incites people to think rather than just listen and follow.
and, yes he does say some pretty stoooopid stuff at times.
He’s no leader, he’s a pundit.
It was said earlier by Convert 66
I admit this possibility did not occur to me. I am open to other explainations of why he said what he said. I am not open to more insults or childishness.
Toughen up that skin:D

Maybe you should be a follower if you are in agreement. But I would urge the same concerns about Truth.

I am just a stickler for following the rules that we all agree to follow. Rest assured, my skin is plenty tough. I get insulted more than you can imagine as a part of my job.

Aren’t we all?

Oy Vay! Where do I begin? First, the bona fide I posted was for background information. By listing I implied I was Catholic. I let you make the inference. I might add that I think we have too many remedial readers here.
No, my mother is not proud that I am a Catholic. She is a pentecostal protestant.

Is this thread coming to a close? Do we all agree that Glenn Beck is the north end of a southound horse? I welcome your opinions.

You know, I intuited something like that. What made you a Catholic?
After a long love affair with atheism and leftist ideology I married, had kids, and realized I had been lied to. I began a search for the truth. After a 20 year search I was introduced to C S Lewis. To make a long story short I discovered Scott Hahn, Dave Armstrong, Thomas Howard, Karl Keating, Patrick Madrid, etc. I had no choice, the truth is the truth. I could not rationalize it away. I struggle daily with certain Church teachings (that have nothing to do with social justice). It is not that I don’t believe what the Church teaches, I just have my own personal demons that lucifer loaned me, and he won’t take them back. 😃

I’ll give the bessing I give myown children::
Angels guard you and keep you safe.

This was far from vintage Beck. Everyone is allowed to have a bad day. I don’t see much preservation of innocence and family values being promoted in the left-agenda mainstream media, so right wing tv and radio is generally better for family living.

*“The King will answer them, ‘Most certainly I tell you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’ *

vatican.va/holy_father/benedict_xvi/encyclicals/documents/hf_ben-xvi_enc_20090629_caritas-in-veritate_en.html

I think reading this encyclical by our Holy Father clarifies how we should be looking at issues of social justice in the world today as faithful Catholics.

ENCYCLICAL LETTER/CARITAS IN VERITATE
OF THE SUPREME PONTIFF BENEDICT XVI TO THE BISHOPS PRIESTS AND DEACONS MEN AND WOMEN RELIGIOUS THE LAY FAITHFUL AND ALL PEOPLE OF GOOD WILL ON INTEGRAL HUMAN DEVELOPMENT IN CHARITY AND TRUTH
The market is subject to the principles of so-called commutative justice, which regulates the relations of giving and receiving between parties to a transaction. But the social doctrine of the Church has unceasingly highlighted the importance of distributive justice and social justice for the market economy, not only because it belongs within a broader social and political context, but also because of the wider network of relations within which it operates.

IMHO, the social gospelerss are in modern dress the old union of crown-and -altar , which the popes have fought against since Constantine made Christianity the state religion and then twisted it to his own purposes. Never mind, they say, that the modern state is atheist at its heart, a fact that the radical Muslims understand and which is one reason for their rejection of modern society but one that liberal Catholics dismiss as unimportant.
I believe he’s saying that too many people with certain views are being successfully propagandized by the liberal media and politicians who promote intense dreams of emotional social justice bliss where you yourself don’t have to pay anything, you just need to hope, dream, and feel good. You’ll keep buying the values they’re selling as long as they keep you starry-eyed in love with their comedies and dramas. Their values are the opposite of most Catholic values. Their opinion of charity is coercing you to push a button in the voter’s booth to take money away from others, which involves no real sacrifice on your part, then they tell you to pat yourself on the back for playing Robin Hood, as they raise your gas taxes. Automatons are not likely to see it or believe it because they keep rah-rah telling your ego that you are independent and open-minded, unlike conservatives, so there’s no way anyone with your stature could fall for something so pernicious. Some have even theorized it as a terrorist plot. Our country is too strong to be defeated militarily, so their best chance is from within, via a default on a heavy debt load (healthcare et al). The progressive hedonists have the money to buy media and politicians, who promote more feelgoodism. The poor progressives think they are winning, but they’re just falling for the con. We’ve been weakened into spoiled childish feelgooders for a few decades, but some refuse to see it, hence Robby’s reference that fundamentalists do see it. All of this is too painful to see for those who have been transformed into emotional puppets by the feelgood media. Not the good ole USA. Couldn’t possibly happen to us, could it? Maybe now you understand the possibilities. It’s best to think proactively and progressively, albeit the right way. Some will refuse to see until it’s too late. Others will at least consider it.

I did not read through this whole thread, but my thoughts were this when I heard him say what he did on this matter.

There is social justice in the way that the magisterium means it; which is incumbent upon individuals to practice. It is a proposition, an invitation, *not *an imposition. Society is not government, and unless I’m misunderstanding the Pope’s encyclical, these proposals are for society to self-impose, not for governments to force on people.

Social justice the way that revolutionary theology folks, marxists, and those nuns who came out in support of the health care bill understand it is something for the few to impose on the many because they know better. It is inherently unjust because it takes free choice out of the individual’s hands. “Social justice”, in their eyes, means confiscating from Peter to pay Paul, and lining their own pockets while they are at it, because, well, they deserve it.

Glenn Beck was referring to the latter definition, not the former, and I for one wholeheartedly agree with him. If my pastor started preaching leftist, government-centered “social justice” propaganda, I would leave and not return.

Thank you, magdelaine, very well stated.

Well, my pastor is all for it. And, I am seriously thinking about changing parishes. Am getting sick and tired of all the sly immigration pieces he puts in his homilies, the preponderance of Spanish publications in our church lobby and bi-lingual services.

I certainly believe that the Church should be helping out, not the government, and diocesan bishops shouldn’t be going to Washington to promote immigration reform, when that terrible health bill was passed yesterday and not a word about that in the homilies.

In fact, our Pastor bragged that he voted for Obama because of the health bill overlooking the fact that Obama is pro-abortion.

Yes, our Church has changed since Vatican 11 but not for the better, and we can blame part of that on radical priest and nuns who never were silenced or punished by the Magistrate.

We are reaping the results of that harvest, and then we wonder why Catholics are drifting away? Churches were filled before that in the 50’s and we gave to the poor and the Propogation of the Faith as well as many missions.

Catholic Charities were in full swing to help others, and I know the priests at that time helped people get jobs, and probably food if they needed it.

That was not very nice, or accurate. Have you you read the rules in regards to ad hominem statements?
That is an opinion I do not share. I have stated my reasons for offense. If you wish to listen to the man, that is your option. I will stick with those who I prefer.
I’ll admit I haven’t read them since last summer. Please forgive me for assuming that the rules were somewhat “flexible” considering the ad hominems leveled against Mr. Beck repeatedly (ergo, ‘sociopath,’ psychopath, dangerous, stupid, inciting violence, etc., ad nauseum…) as well as implied sleights against myself and others as being somehow “less than Catholic” if one has any familiarity with him or his more thoughtful guests than those who peruse such reputable sources as Huffpo, thinkprogress or Sojourners magazine care for.

If anyone had been paying attention to my many posts in this thread, my second (many pages ago) clearly stated that I do not count myself amongst his “fans” and that only for a very brief period did I tune in to his show at all. I haven’t watched his show in over a year. My concerns are very similar to his own, though, I suppose: that social justice on the lips of progressives means far more (and often insidiously more) than what the Catechism or the Magisterium state, and that on a Catholic site so many Catholics were attacking him without a shred of evidence to back their charges.

With the exception of directly quoting his use of the term “social justice” nothing has changed in that regard.

I’d like to thank everyone who posted and made their case(s) because I enjoy a robust exchange, even if I adamantly oppose their view. My blood pressure rises right along with the rest of us (not all, though, to give credit where it is due) but I do enjoy being challenged to clarify and explore my own, often-sloppy thinking. In fact, I will confess that this thread has forced me to reconsider some elements of Catholic social doctrines and reconsider how they actually fit into my preconceptions and personal prejudices. Disentangling oneself from the ubiquitous American civil religion is often a thorny affair for those of us who strive for a political ethic that compliments rather than divides our religious conviction.

All my best…👍
