if you want people to stop purchasing semi-auto weapons you need to get rid of yours now. your argument isn’t genuine as long as you own them.Of course I think they’ll grandfather existing ARs.

The minute I only have them because of a grandfathering provision I’ll be sure to do just that.Vonsalza:![]()

Yep, this would pretty much keep law abiding folks from owning them. If that’s the objective it will work pretty well.A guy owning a mill or a lathe isn’t a new thing. If those folks wanted to be lawbreakers they’d be lathing and milling fully automatic lowers but they don’t. They don’t want to go to prison.
The objective is their dramatically reduced availability in society. And I agree, it does work pretty well.Vonsalza:![]()

Yes, either the law abiding will be kept in check by confiscating their guns…or by their not being inclined to break the law in the first place. The effect on the lawless will be entirely different, and much more minimal. The objective is their dramatically reduced availability in society. And I agree, it does work pretty well.
No, that’s not practically true. All mechanical parts wear out. That’s inherent to a mechanical object.
No one is going to take your guns, Ender.Vonsalza:![]()

If the black market price on even a cheap (but functioning) AR15 rises above a grand, grand and a half, you’ve effectively eliminated the ability for the vast vaaast majority of criminals to get one - as most of them are poor.or by their not being inclined to break the law in the first place. The effect on the lawless will be entirely different, and much more minimal.
This is what claims guns more than anything - lack of care.A lower receiver can survive for generations if it was kept clean and stored out of the elements. It doesn’t take the stress of firing.
On the secondary market, and their price will rise considerably once you can’t buy them at the store anymore. It’s not really a ban if you have 15 million legal exceptions in the market, is it.
A paper weight worth it’s weight in gold, if grandfathered. And a lower without an upper is just a fancy paper-weight.
That’s exactly what I’m aiming for, Theo.Vonsalza:![]()

They’d just buy the ruger mini-14, which has been excluded from all assault weapon bans so farYour average thug does’t have the scratch to buy gold.![]()
Which is why I’ve been pretty consistent in wanting a sort of ban on semiautos as an entire class.Vonsalza:![]()

The mini-14 is more than adequate for any criminal tasks.
But in fairness, you’d get about all the performance out of a lever gun that you’d get out of the mini. They’re both relatively short range rifles. 100-150 yds.Vonsalza:![]()

At range, ammo selection does become important. But the tightness of the action and whether the barrel is free or not (no ammo tube or stock banded to it) makes a difference too.No rifle is much good out past 150 yrds, without a scope.
Ammo selection is probably more important for accuracy than the rifle.
That’s absolutely right. And someone who knows how to shoot also knows how to tweak some increased accuracy out of an average rifle. I expect most novices will be as accurate with an AR as with a Mini. So much gun talk is about sniper accuracy that most shooters can’t deliver.
