It wasn’t my sermon on the Mount. Please don’t give me credit simply for citing it.
And the atheists follow civil law which does not let you shoot people for trespass to chattels. Everyone is supposed to.
Good luck with your " real" Christianity.

Seems pretty sensible to me. I hope everything blows over but it never hurts to be prepared.

393,347,000 guns already in ownership in america, why the need for a few more? Why the need for machine guns?
Lots of reasons.
Someone who doesn’t have one wants one.
Someone turns majority age.
Someone likes one they see in a store.

In general, people acting on their constitutionally protected right.

Ownership of an automatic firearm is rare, other than by government. The licensing is difficult, and since production and import is banned, getting one is expensive.

Didn’t understand your post but that is ok.
My point was not defending your kids. It was defending" stuff" with lethal force.
Hey fair enough Max! No worries.

I’m not even thinking about me and my kids in that post. At least not yet.

I am just trying to think how
other people might be thinking
through THEIR concerns.

Panic buying…stores being emptied…gun sales skyrocketing…hospitals being overwhelmed…business grinding to a halt…cities closing down…now multiply this pandemic by a factor of say 10…society starts to break down…millions…tens of millions sick or dying…medicines no longer available…utilities start to break down…gas stations empty…it won’t be “I need guns to protect my family and what is mine”…it’ll be “my kids are starving and that single guy up the road doesn’t need all that food”…or that old guy has medication what my kid needs"…and that’ll be just the start of the slaughter that follows…armed gangs would form…the stronger gangs would either wipe out or amalgamate with the weaker…they would take what they want…where and when they want…there would be total anarchy…luckily it won’t happen with this virus…but it gives you an idea how people would react in a real catastrophic event

I don’t know why but the buyer has to makes those decisions themselves.

If somone doesn’t think any more fire arms are needed, call your local police department and tell THEM that. See what they say.

Why the need for machine guns?
I don’t know that either. Purchasing them has been illegal since the 1930’s.

None of those are compelling reasons. Remember, the issue was need, not want.

America had a unique start with a vast unoccupied frontier that was settled by people who had to rely on themselves more for defense than a governmental structure. That’s why individualism and firearms are so engrained in our national psyche
Many people still behave as if they are living in that vast unoccupied frontier instead of the modern world where every square inch of land is spoken for.

The problem with that theory Leaf is you don’t get to decide what THEY think they need for them.

The question was not what they think they need. The question was what they do need . Anyone can comment on that, as I did.
I think you can comment.
I think they can decide.

Probably not unique and there certainly were indigenous people here. I don’t know if the guns were used so much for defense: Before and after independence gun laws in America were actually stricter than they are now, particularly in western towns. There was more subsistence hunting in earlier years than now, that’s for sure. It is documented that on the wagon trains west more pioneers shot themselves by accident than were ever shot by Indians.

jeannetherese . . .
That is an interesting assertion; where did you read it?
Yeah. I’ll be waiting for that link too.

A musket? A lever action rifle?
A single action revolver?

That just doesn’t sound correct, but I’ll be waiting along with you for references.

I"m not thinking about hardware so much as who might have been counting off on those episodes back in the day. I’m guessing that someone read a diary of a settler and is extrapolating.
Even with lots of qualitative research, there are so many variables to take into account, that coming up with a definitive conclusion seems unlikely.
It will be interesting to review the material from which the conclusion is drawn.

There are several good reasons not to rack one.

When it comes to rights, one doesn’t have to provide a “compelling reason” to others.
Someone who does not own a firearm may at some point decide they have a need for it. That decision makes it such a need, and as long as they do not violate the law with that firearm, it is nobody else’s business the reason.
Government denying them access is an infringement of their rights which are protected.

feel free to start a topic on the SotM if you want. There is nothing illegal or immoral about these statistics.
This topic would also fit in nicely on the thread re: mass hysteria…evidently a real no, no during these times.
