Really? The encyclopedia Wikipedia disagrees with you “Galileo was a devout Catholic, yet his writings on Copernican heliocentrism disturbed some in the Catholic Church, who believed in a geocentric model of the solar system. They argued that heliocentrism was in direct contradiction of the Bible, at least as interpreted by the church fathers, and the highly revered ancient writings of Aristotle and Plato.”

And more “The war became more and more bitter. The Dominican Father Caccini preached a sermon from the text, “Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven?” and this wretched pun upon the great astronomer’s name ushered in sharper weapons; for, before Caccini ended, he insisted that “geometry is of the devil,” and that “mathematicians should be banished as the authors of all heresies.” The Church authorities gave Caccini promotion.”

What a brilliant priest your church produced “geometry is of the devil?”

Here is another brilliant analysis from some Bishop or cardinal cited in the encyclopedia "But by far the most terrible champion who now appeared was Cardinal Bellarmin, one of the greatest theologians the world has known. He was earnest, sincere, and learned, but insisted on making science conform to Scripture. The weapons which men of Bellarmin’s stamp used were purely theological. They held up before the world the dreadful consequences which must result to Christian theology were the heavenly bodies proved to revolve about the Sun and not about the Earth. Their most tremendous dogmatic engine was the statement that “his pretended discovery vitiates the whole Christian plan of salvation.” Father Lecazre declared “it casts suspicion on the doctrine of the incarnation.” Others declared, “It upsets the whole basis of theology. If the Earth is a planet, and only one among several planets, it can not be that any such great things have been done specially for it as the Christian doctrine teaches. If there are other planets, since God makes nothing in vain, they must be inhabited; but how can their inhabitants be descended from Adam? How can they trace back their origin to Noah’s ark? How can they have been redeemed by the Saviour?”

Oh the dreadful consequences of the earth revolving around the sun.

So Maggie do you proudly throw your lot in with these men? Is as your brilliant priest said geometry of the devil? Have you been daily experiencing the dreadful consequences of the earth revolving around the sun.

I am ROFLOL at their comments. How about you!
I am happy to see that you are laughing because you do not understand the whole of the subject but this has nothing to do with the subject matter of this thread.

If he were infallible on doctrine then he would never have declared Mary a perpetual virgin since she was not. He has sinned against God and is against Christ!
This has nothing to do with the thread.

doulos1:
Where is the command of Christ through his apostles in the New Testament (and I mean an explicit command) to honor or pray to Mary? Surely Christ if this relationship were so important would not have neglected through the apostles to command us to enjoin this relationship. What about the first believers who knew nothing of Mary, but simply came to faith in Christ. Was there something missing from their lives?
This question has nothing to do with the topic of the thread. If you want to discuss the issue that you have raised then start your own thread.

Is that your only source that you have studied to find out the truth about the Galileo affair? I think that there has been some very shoddy scholarly effort been done here.

There is no argument about what these men believed. They had not opposition to the theories of Galileo or even Copernicus. They objected to what Galileo said that was contrary to the Scripture. There are many other sources of information on this controversy that sets the record straight.

As another has already replied, the use of the Wickpedia online is not the most reliable source available. Go do further research, start a new thread when you have completed your task.

For this effort you get a zero score.

This paragraph makes no sense. Are you saying you have seen Mary? That would be an interesting claim! Is she always with you?
first question your comprehension of the paragraph, the conclusions implied by the questions you ask weren’t drawn from the information offered in my post.

It uses a concept that Jesus taught about those who are ‘witnesses’ to Truth. Understanding that concept is the key to making ‘sense’ of the paragraph. 😉

This is an instruction that St. Paul gave, not “God”.

Maybe this is one of those who worship the Bible and claim everything written was said by God…

I am not saying that the Scripture is not inspired, what I am saying is that God inspired what these men wrote and that means that this is an instruction of a man, not God.

Say what!! Are you serious? OK? If it works for you.👍

I hope that you did not misunderstand what I was trying to say. If you read what Doufos said, he was implying that Paul’s words were God’s words. I am not denying the divine inspiration of Paul’s letters, just that it is an overkill to say it was a direct direction from God.

It seems that Doufos does not know that Scriptures were written by men at the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

I love those smiley faces. They are so obnoxious and they are hilarious.
They come in handy when you are getting rabidly attacked too:) When it starts out how is Mary a virgin and goes to and you Roman Catholics and antichrist Popes:eek: Then a Galileo attack and that one has nothing to do with anything relevant to spirituality. So a smiley face has to do what a smiley face has to do.God Bless

I like that comment: “A smiley face has to do what a smiley face has to do”

Yes and when they are doing that in a thread we have to rein them in and get them back to the subject. smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/10/10_17_201.gif smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/10/10_1_112.gif

Sorry to go off topic but…

The pope and the Bible have been proved to be as right as Galileo and the (Catholic Priest) Copernicus.

Einstein proved that it is all relative. Under the theory of Relativity the sun is no more the centre of the universe than the earth. It is no truer to say the earth goes round the sun, than the sun goes round the earth. Both are moving. It sepends which you decide is the measuring point!

Mary is a virgin:D Hey doulos Mary is a virgin now and forever:p Start athread about your raving madness elsewhere and I and the other posters will deal with your slanderous remarks there. This thread is about Mary being a virgin, stay on topic before Maggie is forced to twirl:nope: Now Mary is a virgin.

Has it escaped your mind that the bible nowhere says that Mary the mother of Jesus had other children? In fact Mary made a vow of virginity in Luke 1.
It no where needs to claim this. The facts I have posted namely that Mary and Jospeh began a normal marriage relationship after the birth of Jesus, that Jesus was her firstborn son, not only born son, and the fact that the New Testament writers especially Luke who was Greek used brother and sister instead of cousin plainly teach that the children were chidren of Jospeh and Mary.

Tertullian believed that Mary had other chidren after the birth of Jesus!

Saying Mary is a virgin will not make her so. God has revealed after the birth of Jesus she did not remain a virgin. And all of your rantings will not make it so!
