Only God has the power to forgive sins. (Jesus is God)

Lu 5:21 And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this which speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone?
Really? Better keep studying that New Testament then…
III. Confession
A. Confess your sins to men
~ Leviticus 5:5-6 (All scripture: 2 Tim 3:16)
(Law is a shadow: Hebrews 10:1)
~ 1 John 1:9
~ James 5:16
B. Can men forgive sins?
~ Only God has the power to forgive sins but He exercises this power through men.
~ Mark 2:7
~ Matthew 9:1-8
C. Instituted by Christ
~ John 20:21-23
When the crowds saw it, they were afraid , and the glorified God, who had given such authority to men.

He was sent to preach the gospel. Only the gospel saves. Therefore baptism does not save.

Ro 1:16 ¶ For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
Better tell St. Peter and all the apostles on the day of Pentecost!

Acts Chapter 2:37: Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brethren, what shall we do?” 38: And Peter said to them, **“Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; **and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39: For the promise is to you and to your children and to all that are far off, every one whom the Lord our God calls to him.” 40: And he testified with many other words and exhorted them, saying, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation.” 41: So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.

And yet, somehow, we’re the ones always getting accused of not knowing sacred scripture… 🤷🤷 🤷 🤷
What can I tell ya Dan?

Have you ever heard of poetic language?
You are dancing again…🤷

Prayers are not poetic language…they are sacred communication and sacrifice. Praying TO mary and consecrating yourself to Mary is wrong.

Acts 10:43-47…

Ac 10:43 To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.
44 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.
45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.
46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,
47 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?

The Holy Spirit is received prior to Baptism - at the HEARING OF FAITH…

Galatians 3:2 This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?
Joh 7:39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)
Eph 1:13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,

If you think that baptism doesn’t save, then you have a quarrel with Jesus. Read Mark 16:16 again, and tell us why you think you know better than Jesus.

Was Jesus speaking Gospel truth in Mark 16:16, or just trying to confuse us? And, Catholics regard the command to be baptized as part of the gospel, so it’s impossible to say that the gospel saves without including all the elements of the gospel that Our Lord instructed as necessary for salvation. It’s the height of arrogance to read Jesus’ words, and then state the complete opposite as truth.
Baptism is not salvific - BUT - anyone who refuses baptism obviously is not a disciple of Christ!

Jesus said:

Mr 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
And who was He talking to when he said this??? IN CONTEXT try verse 14 also. You might also look at verse 16 to see what else He told them…

14 At length he appeared to the eleven as they were at table: and he upbraided them with their incredulity and hardness of heart, because they did not believe them who had seen him after he was risen again.
15 And he said to them: Go ye into the whole world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
16 He that believeth and is baptized, shall be saved: but he that believeth not shall be condemned.

Nice try…oh yeah…don’t forget…Your choice of username is quite ironic…Tolkien was quite the staunch Catholic!!!👍

All this has absolutely nothing to do with my post. Frodo used a verse to try showing where he got his authority and I simply pointed out that Christ was talking to His Apostles only when He told them to preach to all nations etc.

And I really don’t feel like getting into a verse war here…we all know that you can come up with cherry picked verses to “prove” your beliefs. Then many of us here can come up with verses to refute your claims and then we have unending nonsense.

THE ‘EXCEPTIONAL CASES’ RULE
By James Akin

Neither!! Sacred scripture FIRST:thumbsup:
Sure, but a) sacret sripture doesn’t interpret itself and b) it is not the sole source of truth reveal by God. 🙂

So the question whether I should I believe the great ancient Church Fathers or an anonymous Internet user who preaches a gospel spiced up with modern inventions still remains…

It(salvation) is by grace through FAITH.

Heb 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: … God …is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
(KJV)
What, if andy, is the difference between “having faith” and “diligently seeking” God? Does diligence imply persistence?

Jesus said:

What you are saying is that you are a direct successor of the apostles. That is the essence of untruth about all self appointed preachers and pastors. It is only to the apostles and their successors that the ordaining of preachers and pastors (priests and bishops, etc.) is allowed.

This is why I only take to heart the words from Holy Mother Church, and not every person who claims to have the truth. Only the True Church has the Truth (as outlined in Sacred Scripture).

Those who have received the Sacrament of Holy Orders are my teachers.

I need qualifications on what I am taught. If I don’t insist on this, than I can be led into anything, for the Holy Spirit protects the Church from error.

Just as Christ fulfilled all of the prophesies of the Old Testament, He allowed his children who came after His Incarnation and Ascension to believe that He was who He said He was. He qualified Himself by fulfilling those prophesies, did Miraculous works of Charity, and then handed His teachings to the apostles.

Those apostles have a direct lineage to Him by His charge in the Gospels. You do not, in my opinion. I only take to heart those things that Christ Himself said, or the things that are said by those He appointed.

If you had the truth, then you would back this up.

Besides, what makes my own personal interpretation wrong, and yours right?

How do I get to Heaven? Follow what the Church tells me to do … that is what Christ intended. This is His wish for me - that I surrender my will to Him, and listen to his teachings from those He appointed.
