ICE tells students on visas they must leave US if schools go online-only

I can’t wait to find out why a Catholic should support this policy. Keep in mind, many of these students can’t go home because of closed borders - in that case they will be arrested and placed in detention (prison). They will also probably lose their visas and be deported for “non-compliance.” ICE doesn’t care if compliance is impossible.

One of my friends is from China. Her mother came to visit in January. She has since been caught in several travel bans, and hasn’t been able to return to China. ICE is expected to arrest her next week.

Who will explain to me why this is a good policy that should be supported by all Catholics?

  1. Because online attendance is considered attendance by the U.S. Department of Education.
  2. Because these circumstances are temporary, and entirely outside any student’s control.
  3. Because these students are already compliant with heightened restrictions and have demonstrated that they can support themselves in the US.
 
I feel bad for any student caught up in this. Visa trouble is the worst.
I don’t think ICE is handling this very responsibly.
 
I feel bad for any immigrant trying to navigate the United States’ evil immigration policies.
 
I guess it makes sense that all student athletes on scholarships should also have their scholarships taken away if sports are not played, and that all with student loans and grants should be also leave school if their college or university goes online full time.

The loan or grant can pay for the online classes.
No need to revoke it if the college goes online.

We do not know how temporary, and it doesn’t matter if it is their fault or not.

But they are not US citizens.

I feel bad for people caught in the situation, but if you cannot comply with the conditions for the visa, you should not have the visa.

It makes sense.

The United States has the most lax immigration policies of almost any nation. I immigrated here.
 
If these students home countries refuse to allow their citizens back into their country how is that the fault of the US? The US has no obligation to non citizens. They are here at America’s discretion. I’m an immigrant who became a citizen, but it baffles me how many people think they have some inalienable right to be in the US when they aren’t citizens.

Christians do.

“There shall be one law for the native and for the alien who resides among you.”

“You shall not wrong or oppress a resident alien; for you were aliens in the land of Egypt.”

“For the Lord your God…loves the strangers, providing them food and clothing. You shall also love the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.”

. . . and many, many more. God commands us to love the immigrant. How are we showing love by condemning people to jail and deportation because - through no fault of their own - they are trapped in the US? Before yesterday, absolutely no one thought this was necessary.

Catholic morality is supposed to be about something more than “not my problem.”

It’s this appalling selfishness and lack of empathy - let alone love - for our neighbor that has gotten us into so many problems. With COVID, we are seeing every day just how dangerous the consequences are if we only think of ourselves.
 
The US is a functionally atheist nation. It’s duty is to its citizens not foreigners. Religion plays no role in the laws of the US.
 
I’m not saying they shouldn’t. Personally I don’t see this as a moral issue. A nations first duty is to its people. Foreigners are a secondary consideration. The home country’s of these people here on student visas need to let them in to where they belong. We’re not talking about refugees fleeing war and death. These are people who have means and made a choice to get an education in the United States. They need to return home now that the situation has changed.

Even if I accept the rest of your argument - which I don’t - I can’t possibly accept as moral the government’s policy that if they can’t return home (which many can’t because of US and foreign travel bans) they should go to prison. That is the current US policy.

This policy is immoral.

Again, that is a policy no one argued for, or thought was necessary two days ago.
 
As a catholic teenager. This isy point of view. I think this is enough and the Immaculate Conception is a holy mystery, which is beyond the human imagination. As catholics, we just need to accept the Dogma defined by the Catholic church. (Eventhough u don’t accept it as a dogma it is worthy of belief). Arguing deeply abt the mystery of IC will do nothing but make us crazy 😂
