They don’t attack it. They just prove that the reasoning to disprove the book of mormon may also be used to judge the bible. Nothing wrong with turning the tables a little.
Cods wallop, they do attack it. But whats worse is that it doesnt achieve anything or disprove any arguments.

By all means attack the bible (which is odd since you follow it), but dont attack it as some weak attempt at misdirection. Attacking the bible wont make the BoM any more true or any less false.

You misunderstood my point. Mormons are REQUIRED to wear garments once they have gone through the temple, it is dogmatic. Garments are supposed to have inherent qualities that can protect Mormons from physical harm.
Catholics are not REQUIRED to wear medals or any other Sacramentals, it is not an issue of dogma. My medal is a daily reminder of the Sacrament of Confirmation and it’s relevance to my life as a Catholic Christian. In other words, it reminds me to try and follow Christ’s teachings as opposed to doing Matt’s will (and believe it or not, they’re not always in synch) and by so doing (usually) predisposes me to receive grace by doing my best to follow Jesus. A holy medal is a man made thing, in and of itself it has no special qualities and does not convey any grace; only Sacraments, which come from God, can do that. It is the devotion that the Sacramental MAY help encourage that has value. Furthermore, it has absolutely no special powers to protect me from physical harm or anything like that; thinking that way is pagan and would reduce it to the level of a lucky charm like a rabbit’s foot or something.
A little better than the first try but you still don’t seem to get it. Catholics are not required to do anything. We are taught what is right and true and and it is up to us to follow those teachings. We have a free will and we don’t always use it correctly according to the Will of God.The Church reminds us of the consequences if we don’t live according to God’s Will. Thats why Jesus gave us a TRUE Church, with all the same TRUTHS Jesus taught the Apostles. all the 7 Sacraments and yes the Sacramentals. Of course the medals are man made, (so are the hosts that are consecrated at Mass,) did you think the angels made them.? Who made them is NOT important, but when they are Blessed they are very Special and yes they are very powerful. Why do you think the Blessed Mother asked us to “Pray the Rosary EVERY day”. because of its power !! Wear the Brown Scapular. Use Holy Water often, even in your home. You sound more like a protestant when you bring up that “lucky charm” garbage, thats their long standing lie against us. It breaks my heart when I hear Catholics fall into that trap because they don’t understand their own faith. You only reinforce them in their thinking. Read Post 537 by PaulDupre, better yet, get your own Catechism of the Catholic Church and study it for yourself.

They won’t burst the bubbles of all the true believers. Reading Ratzinger’s chat with Habermas suggests he won’t burst any bubbles with the true believers either. In both cases, what isn’t said is a lot more illuminating than what might be. 😉

I’m not out of the church. People like me are the majority of the church outside rural Utah. Just like the majority of Catholics are nice pro-choice liberals who have a healthy appreciation for social issues and aren’t hung up on nonsense (look at the American states of Mass., Vermont, or Washington, which have the highest per-capita RC populations).

Come on, admit it. FAIR is a ridiculous bunch.
Sorry but the majority of Catholics who YOU claim are pro-choice liberals are not nice and they are no longer Catholic, no matter what they call themselves. They have placed themselves outside the GRACE of GOD. You cannot be pro-choice and Catholic at the same time anymore than you can be atheistic and Catholic at the same time. No such thing as a foot in each camp. Who are they fooling, NOT GOD. Jesus said, “You are either for ME or against ME.” Any Catholic that condones abortion in any way is putting their soul in grave danger. You say pro-choice catholics have a “healthy appreciation” for social issues. Heathly for who.??? Certainly not healthy for the tiny innocent babies that are killed, and not even for the mothers who suffer grave consequences for their abortions, and I have talked to a few that have suffered. PRO-CHOICE, thats a LIE, Babies DON"T chose to DIE !!!

I know that this question maybe a little off topic of LDS, but it has to do with birth control. I have read on here that some on this site actually feel that the pill is an abortifacient. So those Catholic women that attend Mass today that take the pill should not receive Communion? I bet that there are very few US Catholics at Mass that believe that the pill is an abortifacient. With that said are they considered Pro-Choice Catholics?

God Bless!

The topic of this thread is “lets learn from each other” so this is not off topic.
If a Catholic woman is on the pill for the purpose of preventing pregnancy she is going against the teaching of the Church and the natural Law of God. And she is NOT supposed to receive Holy Communion in the state of serious sin. If anyone receives Holy Communion while in the state of serious sin that is an even worse sin, as it is a sacrilege. And yes, the birth control pill causes abortions. ask any Dr, he has to tell you the truth or take a chance on being sued later. Even if a woman did not know the pill causes abortions she still cannot receive Communion, as taking the pill is a serious sin, in itself. I don’t believe any woman today doesn’t know that as it is soo well known. If she is a Catholic, she has an obligation to know what the Church truly teaches.

What does a holy medal mean to you?
i know this question was not fro me, but since whyme is so at a loss for the meaning behind such things, please let me take this moment to answer it from my own point of view.

i wear a miraculous medal, which is a particular image of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the history of which can easily be found on the internets. I dont wear it because I think it protects me from danger. it has not been blessed by a priest. i wear it fro two main reasons. first, as a reminder. when I am tempted to sin i try to remember to reach up and touch it, to remind me of my promise not to offend God.

Second, i wear it as a sign. whenever i am exercising i often wear it outside my clothing in pllain view of others I may pass on the trail. i find that it gets attention, and can be a converstaion piece, which converstaion leads inevitably to matters of Jesus.

How is this different from what I said? Now there are many catholics who have their medals blessed and they do so for a reason. If not, then it would be a waste of time to have various religious items blessed. I see very little difference between your explanation and mine.

The mormons wear their garments for almost the same reason. It reminds them of who they are when temptation raises its head.

you said Catholics wear medals fro protection from danger. did i remember that correctly? if not i am sorry, i am working from old memory and may be mistaken.

i would not say that there are not Catholics who wear medals for protection from danger, and in fact my using my own medal to remind me of God’s loving reproach, that is certainly an indirect form of what at least some mormons use the undergarments for.

a few months ago a friend who has a son on a mission in s. america got an email from him, in which he reported that he fell off his bicycle and was protected from all injury by the underwear. this is a different type of protection ALTOGETHER than what a Catholic medal, properly understood, provides.

a medal, blessed or not, and by the way i personally see little reason to have an object blessed but that is a persoanl opinion, has no intrinsic power to protect. it is God who protects. the medal is a sign of faith and dependency and an opportunity to witness the faith. the mormoan underwear represent no opportunity to witness faith since they are out of sight. these are very differetn things, the underwear, and the medals.

Except when you are in the locker room! :newidea: They do make quite a conversation piece in those circumstances. I remember when I was 18 and investigating the lds church. The men got together to play basketball and I went along to play or sit on the bench. We all had to change into the uniform when suddenly I found myself among mormon guys all wearing garments. And of course I had to ask about them. When I wore them, I found them to be very useful and no one questioned me about them because they all thought I was wearing long underwear for the cold or in the summer, they are a little shorter, but nothing to draw attention.

This was my first time seeing them and I never forgot it. For an 18 year boy, it left an impression. But they are actually quite comfortable especially in winter.

good point.

i have seen pixtures of them and they do look a lot like longjohns.

after i thought about the boy missionary who said he fell off his bike in argentina while wearing his garments, without injury, it came to me that maybe they did protect him in some degree simply by preventing abrasion. i ride a motorcycle and usually wear additional garments for this purpose as well as to protect from weather.

yet i have personally discussed (very briefly) this matter with a good mormin friend who has told me that she knows that her garmets protect her from dangers.

again, Catholics cannot reasonably make such a claim about medals, or scapulars, or any other sacramental device. these possess no intrinsic power as if they were magical. they are signs and reminders, at least that is my own personal understanding and i know of no other Catholic who believes otherwise.

That is not the usual circumstance, and you also know that one of the edicts of wearing temple garments is that they are not to be shown to the world because of their sacred nature. Mormons are never directed by their leadership to use their temple garments to witness their faith. Quite the opposite, they are told to keep them covered and to not talk about them.

I think we’re gonna have to agree to disagree on this on this one. I did reread Paul’s post, which is directly from the Catechism, and I don’t see where that contradicts anything I said. Sacramentals, by themselves, do not impart grace; it is the disposition to receive grace they can encourage that has value. A Rosary, by itself, is just an object; it has no inherent qualities that can convey anything of value to someone who simply has one or carries it around. If I go downtown, I’ll even see a lot of unsavory characters wearing them around their necks. It is the prayer and the meditation for which the Rosary is used that have spiritual merit. Mary didn’t say “have a Rosary,” or “carry a Rosary,” she said PRAY the Rosary.

Same deal with medals; lots of people, many of whom live anything but what we would consider “Christian lives,” wear them as jewelry or for cultural or superstitious reasons. In these instances, they have absolutely no spiritual value at all; in fact wearing one doesn’t even rise to the level of “practicing religion” and is more sacrilege than anything else. That’s precisely the sort of thing the feeds the Protestant misconceptions to which you referred. Kinda like this Mormon friend of mine in college. He was generally a cool guy, but wore the “Word of Wisdom” on his sleeve and lorded it over the rest of us. He didn’t drink coffee or beer like us poor heathens, but he always had a string of girlfriends and engaged in one particular sin with them every time he had the chance. Believe me, the hypocrisy was far from lost on the rest of us and it totally discounted the respect we might have otherwise (begrudgingly) afforded him for following the teachings of his church.

Why not deconstruct the bible?

For that matter: Why complain about the Mormons, when the same thing happens here constantly? Why not complain about it here?

The idea that you can prove the stories in the bible with the bible itself is a little like a con man, who is trying to pass a zillion dollar check, with the idea that the check is good because we can see the check. It’s called circular reasoning (and if I figured this out at age 12, I doubt anyone here actually believes it, despite the chest thumping).

If the only argument for the existence of Jesus is this one (and I’ve never seen another one) then why not join me in worshiping Inanna, queen of heaven this morning? If we think Jesus existed, then we know she exists, because she’s mentioned in the cuneiform tablets we dig up from Sumerian sites. Those tablets are thousands of years older than the ones that mention Jesus, King David, Zeus and Apollo, so by the logic of the Catholics she’s even more “true” than these other characters (who Catholics think is “more true” than Lehi and Nephi for the same reason).

Hail Inanna, the true goddess, who descended into the underworld and returned unscathed! Hail the queen of heaven!

It is more usual now than before. Exercise has become the norm and fitness centers too. It is true that they are not for witnessing the faith. But it is difficult to hide them when one is changing in a room of people. One has to change clothes in order to exercise in a fitness center or play basketball, etc.

Hi Memaw,

I think you’re a little bit grouchy. Sorry about that.

Look, it wasn’t an insult. If anything it was a compliment.

Where are the the places Catholics live in the U.S.? On the East Coast you have Mass., VT., NH,. On the west coast you have Washington State.

These are the Catholic states, and they’re nice places, where people are treated like adults by their governments. I can go to one of these states and carry a gun if I want to, and I can marry a dude if I want to, and I can smoke pot if I have a reason to. (Granted, I wouldn’t do any of those things, but it’s the principle of it all). They’re pro-choice, progressive places (at least by U.S. standards) where people are allowed to make their own decisions, within reason.

So, don’t be grouchy. I’d far rather hang out in one of the Catholic states than, say, Utah, where my people run the show; or Oklahoma, which is full of fundamentalist protestants.

i don’t think it is legitimate to make such generalizations.

i have spent off and on over the years many months in Oklahoma, mostly in OKC and Norman, going to school. there are precious few Cathlics in OK, but even so i’d say the people there are among the very nicest people anywhere in the wolrd.

this isn’t to say that there aren’t some nutcases there, or that there aren’t nutcases in UTah, and i know for sure (because i have also lived in New York ) that there are a surprising number of nutcases on the east coast.

by which i mean you can generalize up to a point, but will sooner or later get trapped by doing so.

it is a sign of youth and inexperience, i’d say.

You should read my Grandpa’s mission journal. He went to New Hampshire and Vermont right as the depression was breaking out. People in his generation weren’t salesmen (if it’s so great, we wouldn’t have to sell it) the way these poor kids are today. They spent two years feeding people, doing home repairs for free, and other such stuff. So, yeah, Dorothy Day type activism used to be a requirement, at least for men, in the LDS tradition.

.
That is admirable, LaMar. A real slice of positive LDS history between giving up polygamy and the present crisis of faith. Is it good enough to publish?

Why not deconstruct the bible?
i can’t think of a single reason not to. fact is the bible has been subjected to intense scrutiny for many centuries, and as you are somethin g of an example, is under continual withering attack from its enemies. i notice that it is still here, influential as ever, while by far most of its enemies are turned to dust.
(and if I figured this out at age 12, I doubt anyone here actually believes it, despite the chest thumping).
can only speak for myself, you would surely be wroing. when i was a child I believed as you did at 12, but then i grew up. i’m guessing that 12 y/o was not more than about 10 years ago for you. if so then hopefully you’ve got a lot of time left to come to grips with what you are struggling against.

this is a paragrpah written by a person not very familiar with the bible, nor Jesus, nor the Church that Jesus established. not much else to say, except to invite you to study more, look for reasons to believe than to disbelieve.

I have one question, if your Catholic, then why not have it Blessed and receive the graces that go with wearing it devoutly? Read about that in the CCC. Why do you think the Miraculous Medal is called a “miraculous.” Medal??? Did you know that someone gave Charles Lindburg a Miraculous Medal just before he went on his transatlantic flight, and he hung it in the cockpit. And he told how every time he started to fall asleep that medal would bump into something and cause him to wake up. He credited it for saving his life. He was NOT a Catholic.
