1 JohnI think that part of the problem that Protestants have understanding purgatory is that they don’t believe a person can be perfect and sinless.
8If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives.
Romans 3:9-10
What then? Are we better than they? Not at all; for we have already charged that both Jews and Greeks are all under sin; 10as it is written, "There is none righteous, not even one.
Romans 3:23
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
Psalm 14:3
They have all turned aside; together they have become corrupt; there is no one who does good, not even one.
Worship services are for praising and worshiping God, you glorify Him by doing good works and following His commandments. But not now. In heaven, but on this earth, we aren’t supposed to worry about doing good works, we’re just supposed…I never was sure what exactly we were supposed to be doing. Glorifying God? What, in practical terms, does that mean? Many people seemed to think it meant singing, praying, and swaying in a “worship” service.
Letting Christ do things “through you” is about doing what God wants you to do, rather than what you feel like doing. The fact that many people do not do it doesn’t mean the doctrine is wrong. Is Catholicism wrong because there are cafeteria Catholics? Letting Christ live through you is surrendering YOUR will to Him completely. We were taught that we shouldn’t be doing “good works,” but that Christ should do them through us. What, in practical terms, does THAT mean? Many people seemed to think it meant doing whatever you pleased (as long as it wasn’t “sinful”) and not worrying about anything, since we were “covered by Christ” anyway.
Relationship is something that is important… you do it by staying focused on Jesus, praying continuously, being able to discern God’s will so you may follow it. IF you have no relationship with Jesus, you are not saved you are just religious, following laws with no backing. here is an explaination:christinyou.net/pages/persrel.htmlI didn’t get the whole point of life in Christ. A relationship? What did THAT mean, in practical terms? For people like me, who don’t have an easy time developing HUMAN relationships, a “relationship with Christ” was really hard to comprehend and practice.
Yes, being completely perfect is impossible (I have already sinned in the past haven’t you?) but it IS possible to become righteous in God in the future.Like I said, the idea that we are actually supposed to be “becoming perfect” here on this earth was totally, completely foreign to me as a Protestant. I didn’t think it was possible. Only Jesus was perfect.
